#98 Walking Reigate Hill and Gatton Park

It’s the end of August and we are meeting up with my mate Richard Vobes aka. The Bald Explorer in Surrey for a 6 Mile Walk around Colley Hill, Reigate Hill and Gatton Park high up on The North Downs and following part of The North Downs Way National Trail. We explore some of the history and heritage of this area whilst taking in the incredible views of The Surrey Downs. Banter was also the order of the day as well as some carefully planned photobombing….!

Walks in Surrey: Exploring Priory Park in Reigate

Today, Matthew Holdsworth is taking me for a stroll through Priory Park in Reigate, Surrey.

It is the most popular park in Reigate and adjoins Reigate Priory School directly south of the High Street and west of Bell Street. It has a recreation area for smaller children as well as football fields, tennis courts, a skatepark, woodland and large Priory Pond, draining over a small weir. And as the name suggests, was once the site of a priory, the small lake once the monks fish pond.

Priory Park Reigate history underground

The foundations of the original stable blocks and outbuildings at Reigate Priory Park were uncovered by archaeologists in April 2007. This short video features comments from local historians.

The area dates back over 750 years :

the Augustinian Priory, 3 Howards and their home; 2 Lord Mayors of London, a Lord Chancellor and 3 Earls, Lady Henry Somerset, tenants and visitors including Sir Winston Churchill, and the Beattys - the Admiral, the Millionairess and the Derby winner. It is now a school, a museum and a public park. These historic remains of the stables are now grassed over with a circular metal /glass cafe and a childrens play park. The ancient lake was emptied at the same time.

Day 3 Reigate to Tatsfield

After a rather noisy stay in Reigate we had an equally noisy day today walking very close to the M20, M23 and M25 motorways. We saw the Millenium Stones in Gatton Park. We walked through Merstham and saw the REAL Quality Street! Distant views of London Town and crossed the Meridian Line.

We were not intending on capturing video of this circle as we did not have a drone with a attached gimbal with us. However, this has been a popular circle so we have released what we do have.

The Royal Alexandra and Albert School at Gatton Park, Reigate in Surrey is one of the largest state boarding schools in England and Wales. The Headmaster, Paul Spencer Ellis, commissioned this film to help dispel some of the myths about state boarding. RAAS achieves excellent academic results and has facilities that are equal to many schools in the independent sector. The school is rated as outstanding by OFSTED. Most of the film was shot, unscripted, on a single 'open day' for parents.

To get here go to Fort Lane on this map and walk past the TV towers for about 5 minutes until you reach a gate. Open the gate and continue past a pavilion and you will reach this map which is where this video has been taken
