Panama Canal Gatun Lake - Lago Gatun Canal de Panama
Gatun Lake (Lago Gatún) is a large artificial lake to the south of Colón, Panama. It was created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal (It's 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level). It forms a major part of the Panama Canal, carrying ships for 33 km (21 mi) of their transit across the Isthmus of Panama.
The lake was created between 1907 and 1913 by the building of the Gatun Dam across the Chagres River. At the time it was created, Gatun Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world. Gatun Dam was also the largest of its kind.
The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is an artificial 48-mile (77 km) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake.
The Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan. It takes six to eight hours to pass through the Panama Canal. The American Society of Civil Engineers has called the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is an artificial 77 km (48 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. Canal locks are at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 m (85 ft) above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original locks are 34 m (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded canal began commercial operation on June 26, 2016. The new locks allow transit of larger, post-Panamax ships, capable of handling more cargo.

Panama Canal Cruise - Day 6 Panama
Todays epic Panama Canal cruise vlog is sponsored by:
Hey Cruisers! It's day six of our Caribbean Princess Panama Canal cruise, and I am up bright and early to catch our first pass through the Panama Canal locks. We found out early on that this was a really long and slow process. So instead of having hours of probably boring footage we have opted to use time-lapse for the majority of our passage through the canal. Sadly, the video quality does suffer a bit in that the results are quite shaky, but we couldn't think of a better way to show the trip through the locks. I'll give you a bit of information about the Panama Canal, and how the Panama Canal locks work as we show the time lapse footage. After we make our fist pass through the locks we will spend some time in Gatun lake. There are some great photo opportunities here, and since quite a few people have booked excursions, it's a great time to explore the ship. I took this opportunity to find a better viewing area for our trip back through the locks. Through out our Caribbean Princess cruise we had been wanting to try the Ernesto Burger at the new Salty Dog restaurant, but we found out that it takes 25 minutes or more to prepare the burger. Now that the ship is half empty, and we've got lots of time, we'll head over to the Salty Dog and do a little burger research. You've got to see this burger to believe it! We round out this vlog with a little footage of an amazing, but limited port where we will pick up the cruise passengers that had booked excursions. Thanks for watching our Panama Canal cruise video. Be sure to check back soon. We'll be post video from our stop in beautiful Limon soon.

Panama City Panama - LovePanamaRealEstate.com
Gatun Lake is key to supplying the water necessary to operate the locks system. Formed by an earthen dam across the Chagres River to keep the water 85 feet above sea level, the water runs downhill to fill the locks. No pumps, no power other than the force of gravity! Fact: It will take about 52 million gallons of water to float your Holland America ship through the locks.

How Does the Panama Canal Work?
The Panama Canal is approximately 80 kilometers long between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Canal uses a system of locks that function as water lifts, raising the ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level); ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide.

Gamboa Rainforest Resort Aerial Tram Tour in Panama
The glide through the jungle on the Aerial Tram allowed us to see the rainforest. Our tour limited our animal watching excursion due to the heavy rain. However, we were lucky to view a toucan.
Viewing the forest from the top of the Swiss-engineered aerial tram system was breathtaking. Gliding smoothly through the treetops, we experienced the wildlife sounds and peace of the tropical rainforest firsthand.
A Gamboa’s tour guide accompanied us throughout the entire tour. The 1.2-kilometer (3/4 mile) ride culminates at a hilltop where we had the opportunity to visit the Observation Tower. After walking up the spiral ramp, we experienced a panoramic view of the:
Chagres River
Panama Canal
Embera Indigenous Village
Town of Gamboa
