L/S vehicles of the German Army retreating from Antwerp, (pictures taken in secret), as British 2nd army near the city. Belgian collaborators houses are ransacked by the Belgian White Brigade who also tear down street signs. Allied flags appear from windows. Advance tanks of the British Army enter Antwerp with civilians on board, they all get wild reception. Collaborators and German prisoners are marched away.

Oude filmbeelden uit de hoofdstraten (Pelikaanstraat, Keyserlei, Meir, het Steen ) van een verdwenen stad: Antwerpen. Verdwenen in de zin dat alleen de naam is gebleven en de richting van de hier gefilmde straten maar al de rest is nu anders. Dat maakt deze beelden zo vreemd: je kijkt terug in een plots beweeglijk druk stadscentrum, een levend verleden dat haast niemand die nu in leven is ooit heeft gekend. Hommage aan de cineast die dit vastlegde.
Vooral dat wat men niet wil vastleggen maar toevallig meefilmde geeft films als deze meerwaarde.
Even een citaatje uit Knack van vandaag 1 oktober 2008 (p.94): over het sloopwerk van oude gebouwen dat dagdagelijks verder wordt gezet. Bedenk dat een aantal decennia terug het Centraal Station nauwelijks aan de sloophamer ontsnapte en nu is het de trots van de stad... Ziehier de oogst van de voorbije maanden: op de hoek van Klapdorp en de Mutsaardstraat ging een historische huizenblok tegen de vlakte. In de Quellinstraat verdween Huis-Hoste. In de Nationalestraat willlen ze een imposant art-decocomplex van architect Gustaaf Fierens afbreken. En bulldozers walsen op dit moment de laatste resten van het ooit zo machtige Noordstation tot gruis. (...) En nee, van nostalgie alleen kan een stad niet leven. Maar zonder een verleden ook niet. Film opzettelijk zonder klankband, uit respect voor de beelden. Vooral de details onthullen.

Anniversaires tragiques et glorieux - Sorties d'Anvers
News item explaining the stages of the deployment of the Antwerp Forts in the First World War (through animated images). Antwerp was the last fortified stronghold of the Belgian army. However, the German troups succeeded in penetrating the fortified Belgian lines. The Belgian troops were forced to move further away to the west.

Aan het eind van de 19de eeuw wordt het middeleeuwse Antwerpse stadshart nagenoeg van de kaart geveegd als de Scheldekaaien worden rechtgetrokken.
In 1875 werd de Schelde verbreed van gemiddeld 270 m naar ca. 500 m, hetgeen bekendstaat als de 'Rechttrekking van de Schelde'. Daarbij werd een groot deel van de oorspronkelijke Antwerpse burcht, waar de stad ontstaan was, gesloopt. Enkel het Steen bleef hiervan nog over, dat in 1890 werd omgebouwd tot een 'nepkasteel'.
