A day with the Gautrain in Johannesburg, South Africa
A day spent with the Gautrain and the Gautrain busses in Johannesburg, South Africa. We spent a day taking Bastian on the Gautrain (subway / commuter train system) in Johannesburg.
We started at Rosebank, went to Hatfield, then on to Midrand station. From Midrand station we took the Gautrain bus service to Mall of Africa. We had a fun day at Mall of Africa and then returned with the bus and then train to Rosebank.
It was a long day, but Bastian really enjoyed the train and bus rides. Such a great service and experience. Using the Gautrain with kids is a pleasure. Especially since Bastian can still use the Gautrain for free.

On 6 April 2011 one of Africa's great infrastructure projects will take a giant leap forward. South Africa's high speed Gautrain will rattle through to Pretoria for the first time on a test run and there are plans to extend the railway even further to ease traffic congestion. On the same day the Gautrain will set the fare for the Johannesburg- Pretoria run. ABN's Chris Bishop went underground in Sandton near Johannesburg for the latest.

#HelloRecommends - Top 3 destinations along the Gautrain Johannesburg route
Hello Joburg Magazine took some of Johannesburg's top food and lifestyle influencers on a food and drink journey from Sandton to Rosebank to downtown Jozi … using the Gautrain every step of the way!
The day kicked off at the towering rooftop bar that is San Deck at Tsogo’s Sun Sandton Sun hotel in the heart of Sandton for welcome drinks and dazzling views. Our guests, including @jessica_vanheerden, @thatstotallyfetch_sa and @glamfoodiesa, sipped some of San Deck’s most popular cocktails – from the cool San Sunset to the colourful San Martini – while they snapped selfies for the ’gram. After all, cocktails taste better when you’re drinking them in the sky!
A short stroll to the Sandton Gautrain station later, we all hopped on the train to Rosebank and were there in a mere four minutes. From there, we headed to the brand-new Mythos restaurant at The Zone @ Rosebank for a Greek feast of different meze, such as falafels, halloumi, dolmades, keftethes, biftekias and souvlakias – not forgetting the bottles of white wine on the side. For dessert, we were treated to one of the best sweet treats we’ve had all year: Loukoumades (AKA Greek doughnuts) drizzled with honey, pecan nuts and cinnamon. Delicious!
After lunch, we got back on the train at the Rosebank Gautrain station and took it to Park Station. Another four minutes later, we were getting off the train and into an Uber for a short drive to @themarabiclub, Joburg’s jazz jewel in New Doornfontein. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly bouncers and then taken upstairs to rooftop of The Hallmark Hotel, the boutique hotel that the jazz club is housed inside. It was perfect timing: The cityscape views at golden hour were nothing short of mesmerising. Paired with live jazz and the best cocktails in town (the Skillachi house cocktail is a must-try!), we couldn’t have asked for a better end to the day.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a Joburg local or visitor – one thing you simply must add to your Jozi bucket list is a foodie journey through the city using the Gautrain. It’s quick, safe and immaculately clean, and the stations are conveniently within close proximity to some of Joburg’s best-loved restaurants and bars. Cheers to that!

South Africa Vlog: Shopping in Johannesburg
December 21, 2012
We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice.
If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi.
If you're staying at the Garden Court Hotel, which provides a free shuttle bus service to and from OR Tambo Airport, take the Gautrain back to Rhodesfield Station, which is one stop before the airport. This will cost you just 27 Rand (compared to 115!)! The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Rhodesfield Station. We strongly suggest that you take this option during daylight hours. If your shopping trip extends into the night, then we recommend that you pay the extra money to take the Gautrain to the airport then ride the free shuttle bus to the hotel, which is the safest option.
