Located between the Idukki and Pattanamtitta district of Kerala, Gavi is a vast landscape filled with evergreen forest part of Periyar Tiger Reserve. The part is home to a variety of wildlife species including the majestic Bengal Tiger, Bison, Leopards, Jaguar, Elephant and much more.
The park also provides Safari trips to its visitors to enjoy the beauty of the forest and to spent some time in the woods and relax.

Jungle Camping (Deep Forest Tent Stay-Gavi, Kerala)

Camping at the jungle is a real-life adventure. KDFC has two camping sites where you can pitch your tent. As the night falls gather around a bonfire and warm yourself on a chilly night with some songs or chit chats. Nestle in the thick forest listening to the nightlife of the jungle and the chirps of the birds welcoming the dawn. A memory to be treasured!. For the most adventurous ones who would love to spend a night in the deep forest can pack their bags for a night stay in portable small tents. Guides and helpers will accompany the guests. Streaming a hot and delicious dinner will be prepared at the camp and served to the guest. The programme also offers a relaxing rowboat ride, a visit to the cardamom plantation, then to the cardamom curing house and a visit to Sabarimala viewpoint, the scenic beauty spot to capture the panoramic view of the Sabarimala hills and the pilgrim spot. Not desirable for ladies and kids.

It was a freezing morning in Gavi even during the summer in April and we got up ready for the forest safari. Though we were ready the bus reached late by more than 15 minutes. Well though they were late the staff was so cooperating and were taking all initiatives to show each and every forest life to the visitors.
At the end it was a nice trip with some distant views of Indian Bisen, Sambar Deer, Mountain squirrel, Langoors and a wide variety species of birds.

Gavi is 28 km south west of Vandiperiyar, 14 km from Kumily, near Thekkady.Gavi is inside the Ranni reserve forest. Gavi is a part of Seethathode Panchayath in Ranni Taluk. Gavi is part of the Periyar Tiger reserve, and the route can be covered by car from Vandiperiyar. The entrance fee is 25 rupees per person and 50 rupees per vehicle. Cameras are 25 rupees and video cameras are charged 100 rupees. Both day and night stays are available. Forest tent camping is available from November through March.[citation needed]. Its been said that most enjoyable route to Gavi is the way from Pathanamthitta. The rough journey to Gavi may better be made on a sturdy vehicle like jeep which are available on hire either from Vandiperiyar or from Kumily. Entry passes must be obtained from the Forest Check Post en route at Vallakkadavu. Advance booking with the Kerala Forest Development Corporation Ltd. is highly appreciable wherein such formalities will be taken care of by the Company itself.
Botanists have confirmed that Gopher Trees can be seen in Gavi, Kerala. Gavi's forest area, there are two Gopher trees and they are believed to be the only two gopher trees in India. The tree, which is identified as 'gopher', is known as 'Nirampalli'. Gopher wood or gopherwood is a term used once in the Bible.
The tree standing at Gavi forest is of robust stem and lush foliage. According to state Forest Department officials, though the fully-grown gopher in Gavi is the only such tree sighted in the periphery of the jungle, possibly there could be more such trees still surviving in the inner forests of Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Kerala,More Info :

Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady, is an example of nature’s bounty with great scenic charm, rich bio diversity and providing veritable visitor satisfaction. Sprawled over an area of 925 Sq .km., Periyar is one of the 48 tiger reserves in India. Zealously guarded and efficiently managed reserve is a repository of rare, endemic and endangered flora and fauna and forms the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and Pamba. Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area in the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The protected area covers an area of 925 km2 (357 sq mi). 305 km2 (118 sq mi) of the core zone was declared as the Periyar National Park in 1982.

The park is often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu. It is 4 km (2.5 mi) from Kumily, approximately 100 km (62 mi) east of Kottayam, 110 km (68 mi) west of Madurai and 120 km (75 mi) southeast of Kochi.

Apart from Elephants, the other animals can be found in the Periyar Sanctuary are, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Gaur, Mouse Deer, Dole or Barking Deer, Indian Wild Dog and Tiger. There are, now estimated counts of 40 tigers in the Periyar National Park. The major four species of primates are also found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Gee's Golden Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque. Periyar is also being considered as the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which can rarely be seen but commends its presence.

Gavi is a nature friendly village that is inside a reserve forest. This is one of the best places to get the feel of monsoon Kerala and its rain forests. We traveled to Thekkady a day ahead of our Gavi Road Trip and stayed in Woodnote Resport at Thekkady. Woodnote is a cozy accommodation close to Thekkady at a reasonable price for the type of service that they offer us. We stay in their Suite whose tariff is Rs. 6,500.00 while they also have Standard Rooms at Rs. 3,500.00 and Delux Rooms at Rs. 4,500.00. We had booked Woodnote's Gavi Package which included jeep safari, entry tickets, break fast, lunch, trekking, and boating. The price for this package is Rs. 1700 per head for entry ticket and Rs. 3000 (for a maximum of 7 pax) for the jeep. What I enjoyed about this package is that the travel and the view of lush green Western Ghats. There is also a chance of spotting wild animals like elephants, baisons, lion tailed macaque, langur, and so on. If you are lucky, you may come across a tiger or a leopard. However, during our Gavi trip we saw baisons, lion tailed macaque, langur and some interesting bird species. A few questions about Gavi answered here: 1. Is bike ride allowed in Gavi? No. Bike rides are not allowed to Gavi. 2. Mobile Networks in Gavi??? Almost Nothing. BSNL, if you are lucky. 3. Is there any accommodation in Gavi? Yes, KFDC is providing lodges, camps, and tents. 4. Best time to visit Gavi? I believe Gavi has something to offer in every season. However, during monsoon you may not be able to do much activities.
