Being Gay - Connecticut's coming out stories (TEASER)
In honor of October's LGBT History Month and National Coming Out Day, and in conjunction with the upcoming CT Forum Being Gay on October 5 with Martina Navratilova, Dan Savage, Bishop Gene Robinson, and Jonathan Capehart, The CT Forum gathered a diverse group of 20 people -- including Connecticut citizens, business and political leaders, and students --to share their personal coming out stories about being gay.
Deeply personal, powerful, and compelling, this 90-second video is just a sampling of the rich stories shared by this remarkable group. A longer video compilation will be shared later this week.
These stories give a local Connecticut focus to the Being Gay Forum conversation on October 5, and it is our hope that they will serve as a platform for important dialogue -- not just platitudes and soundbites -- that our community needs.

Hebron Old City hopes for protected status
(3 Jul 2017) LEADIN:
As a UNESCO World Heritage Committee conference gets underway in Poland, Palestinian officials in the West Bank hope the Old City of Hebron will be included on a list of UNESCO endangered sites.
STORYLINE:
Hebron is the West Bank's most populous city. It is holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians alike.
It is the location of the Ibrahimi Mosque, a place revered by Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
Several hundred Israeli settlers live in compounds in Hebron in the midst of 170,000 Palestinian inhabitants.
As the 41st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee starts in Poland, Palestinian officials on the West Bank say they hope the committee will include the Old City of Hebron on its list of endangered sites.
According to the UNESCO website, Hebron/al-Khalil is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, sacred to Muslims, Christians and Jews, as the burial place of prophets Abraham/Ibrahim, Isaac, Jacob and their wives. It is known as Khalil ar-Rahman or al-Khalil, which means the friend in Arabic.
One member of Hebron's Municipal Council Khaled Fahed Qawasmi says the city is an important religious site but it currently has problems.
The future of this city is unclear because Israel continues to divide it and to besiege the Old City and the Ibrahimi Mosque as well as an integral part of the city. The city is divided through closures and road blocks. There are more than a hundred streets, roads and alleys which are closed but the Israeli army, to keep provide what they (the Israelis) call the security of the settlers.
In Hebron, Palestinians must frequently cross through military checkpoints to get around the area, and the close proximity of the two populations has turned the city into a flashpoint of violence.
Hebron has been the centre of many of the Palestinian attacks targeting Israelis in the past year and a half.
The Palestinians seek the West Bank, captured by Israel in 1967, as the heartland of a future independent state and say the Jewish settlements there are illegal, a position that has wide international backing.
Israel says the presence of its settlers is justified by an ancient Jewish connection to Hebron going back to the days of the biblical patriarch Abraham.
Khaled Fahed Qawasmi says there are many claims to the Old City.
There is an Israeli claim that Hebron is a Jewish city, while the Palestinians say that it is an Arab city. The truth is that it is an old Canaanite city where several peoples lived in it and several religions prevailed in it. It was occupied by Israel in 1967. It is an Arab Islamic city where the majority were Muslims, while a Jewish minority and a Christian minority lived there. It was, historically, an example of religious coexistence.
Khaled Fahed Qawasmi says there are many reason why the Old City should be considered for UNESCO heritage status.
This city is famous for its Old City and the noble sanctuary (the Ibrahimi Mosque). These are important archaeological sites. They are important for the whole of humanity and for all religions. I believe that it (the Old City) should be registered on the World Heritage list for what it culturally and represents for its religious and touristic importance.
The 41st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will run in Poland until 12 July and debate contentious issues like Palestinian motion to deny Israel sovereignty over Jerusalem and the level of protection Poland gives its pristine Bialowieza forest.
It brings together 21 member states, over 170 observer nations and many non-governmental organizations.
Along with Hebron's Old City the committee is considering 25 other diverse cultural sites from around the world.

Rebel Rabbis: Anti-Zionist Jews Against Israel
VICE embeds with the London branch of the Neturei Karta, a group of controversial Ultra Orthodox Jews who campaign against Zionism and for the immediate dismantling of the state of Israel.
Because of their unusual views, and support of people like ex-Iranian president Ahmadinejad and groups like the Hungarian far right Jobbik party, other Jewish people often label them as extremists.
Reporter Milène Larsson goes behind the closed doors of this secretive community to understand why this Jewish group's anti-Israel sentiment has led them to join Palestinians protesting Israeli occupation and burn Israeli flags.
