Journey to Tanzania - Safari to Manyara and Ngorongoro Day 2
The second day was to Ngorongoro, where the tour guide said we can see many lions there. That morning was too foggy and we were quite boring to see nothing outside the window. We asked the driver to go near the Serengeti because if there is animal migration, we should see it in Serengeti. But we just found a big Massai tribe. Then we went to the crater to see different kinds of wild animals like huge number of zebras, buffalos, gazelle, some birds (I forgot their names la), elephants, Hippo, sleeping lions, a slim cheetah and a fox.

TANZANIAN SAFARI - PHOTO RETROSPECITVE
Hi this is Barbara from Travels With Lobo and Barbara
My trip to Tanzania Africa last January checked of two points on my bucket list.
- no. 1 -an African safari
- no. 2 - climb Mt. Kilimanjaro
Since this is the last blog of the Safari portion of the trip let me address a few questions about the Safari part.
Is January a good time to go on a safari in East Africa?
It is considered a “good” time but not the best.
The best wildlife viewing months in Tanzania are during the dry season from late June to October. The best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is during June and July
==========================
There are hundreds of companies offering safaris and treks of Mt. Kilimanjaro – which one to pick?
In most cases, a recommendation is a good thing, and in my case the recommendation came from my nephew James who previously had fulfilled part of his bucket list with Bryson Heroes Tours based in Moshi located at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. In retrospect I would highly recommend this company as well.
======================
What does it cost?
The 5-Day Camping Safari portion cost $1400 US per person for:
English speaking guide driver/guide
four wheel Toyota Land Cruiser with pop up roof for game viewing
cook for three meals a day
unlimited drinking water
camping facilities except for sleeping bags
park fees
one night hotel accommodations in Moshi after safari but not meals
----------------------------------
also did not include tips (generally 15% collected at end of safari)
alcoholic drinks
Where will you go?
All safaris in this part of Africa start and end in the town of Moshi at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro
=================
Did I take maleria pills? Yes, with no ill effects
===========
So let move on to no. 2 on the bucket list - Mt. Kilimanjaro

Malaika - Wazungu wanaimba wimbo wa Kiswahili feat. „The Thomson Gazelles“
In January 2018 we, a delegation of 13 people from Austria, have visited Tansania to inaugurate a water pipeline in Kikavu, which could have been carried out by support of Austrians, initiated by Mrs. Elisabeth Klösch. We visited St. Joseph‘s Hospital in Moshi, two schools (a.a. Nguzo NNE Primary School), have been on Game Drives in Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara Nationalpark und much more adventures and Safari we‘ve experienced! At this point: 1000 Thanx to „Pumba Adventures and Safari“, Deus Mahoo & Deko Kiwale; Best Guides of the World! And Asante sana to Father Josephat, who had accompanied us and prayed for and with us. We went back home to Austria and Germany, completely overwhelmed by the lots of impressions and experiences. The beautiful, grandiose landscapes and the lots of wonderful, so friendly people in this country have brought us to - not say „Good bye!“ but „SEE YOU SOON!“ when we left; Because we all are very sure: We will come back to Tansania! Soon... Tutakutana tena!
With the song „MALAIKA“ sung in Kiswahili by „Kaiserin Sissi & Hermili“ we want to send out a little „Asante sana“ to our hosts. Deus and particularly Deko have given everything to teach us this song. I presume, their ears were still bleeding...
Great Migration/Oclaa Adventures
Best time to go!
Typically, December to May is considered the green season and the migration can usually be found on the plains in the southern and eastern Serengeti. By late May when the plains start to dry up, the migration will head westwards to the Western Corridor and remain there until around July before heading to the Northern Serengeti. The dry season from late June to October offers the best wildlife viewing in general with the wildlife migration as its absolute highlight. This is when the famous river crossings take place. During the height of the dry season from August to October a portion of the migration herd will spill across the Kenyan border into the Masai Mara. Usually by November, the rains will have commenced on the southern plains starting the migration cycle all over again.
The best time to visit the Serengeti is from June to September being the dry season; it’s better to be equipped for cool or cold temperatures at night, especially at higher altitudes. In September the temperatures begin to increase, and it can get a bit hot at lower elevations. During the month of October, the short rains season begins.
In June, the herds of wildebeest are located in the northwestern park of the park, in the area of the rivers Grumeti and Mara (Mara Region) where you can watch them when crossing rivers, while in July they move to the Masai Mara. At the end of October or in November, the wildebeest return to the Serengeti, when, the short rain season begins. As for other seasons you can choose.
January and February, in the "short dry season & quot;, when they are in the southern part of the park or in nearby Ngorongoro, and are in breeding season.
Day 1: Arusha to Lake Manyara
You will be picked up from Moshi and get transferred to the Lake Manyara National Park. You will arrive in time for lunch at the lodge, and after lunch, you will head into the Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game drive. This national park is one of Tanzania’s most dramatically located wildlife areas, consisting of a massive but shallow soda lake (covering two-thirds of the park), located at the foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western escarpment. The park’s varied habitat attracts a wide variety of animals, including one of Africa’s largest concentrations of elephants, Lake Manyara’s unique tree-climbing lions, as well as large flocks of flamingos attracted by the algae in the lake. Dinner and overnight stay will be provided as per the standard and type of accommodation option requested.
Estimated non-game-viewing travel time is two and a half hours, covering a distance of 130 kilometers.
Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park to Serengeti Plains
After breakfast, you will head towards the Serengeti National Park, via the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands behind, you will descend into the heart of wild Africa, the Serengeti National Park, with its endless plains, rolling into the distance as far as the eye can see. You will then head to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source to this area and therefore attracts wildlife, well-representative of most of the Serengeti’s species. You will arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight will be provided as per the standard and type of accommodation option requested.
Day 3: Serengeti Plains
After breakfast, you will have a game viewing drive along the Sogore River Circuit, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, and which is good for possible lion, Thomson gazelle, topi, ostrich, and cheetah sightings. The visitor’s center, not far from the Serengeti Seronera Lodge and public campsites, is well-worth a visit after the morning’s game drive. This nicely designed center, offers some interesting wildlife displays as well as a gift shop selling information leaflets and maps of the area. The center also has a shop where cold drinks and snacks can be purchased, as well as a picnic area and information trail up and around a nearby kopje. You will enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch at the center in the shade of the giant acacia trees. In the afternoon, you will follow the Kopjes Circuit, which goes anti-clockwise around the Maasai Kopjes, which usually attract a number of lions and some formidably large cobras. Kopjes are weathered granite outcrops, scattered around the plains, most of which are miniature ecosystems, providing shade and drinking water in pools left in the rock after the rains. This makes the kopjes particularly good for spotting wildlife in the dry seasons, including lions, which like to lie in wait for animals coming to drink. Dinner and overnight will be provided as per the standard and type of accommodation option requested.

Serengeti Safari met een Rasta. Aanrader?! - VLOG 2 // Noord-Tanzania
Goedkoop is duurkoop!
TUENDE, TUENDE, LET's GO!

◎ Mijn verhaal? ◎

Tanzania Expedition 2003
Dublin to London, London to Dubai, Dubai to Nairobi, Nairobi to Tanzania...... It took forever to get us and our gear here, but we made it!
After arriving in Dar es Salaam, we made the epic bus journey to Moshi, the most fun town in Tanzania! Standing at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, it turned out to be our home from home! Staying at the wonderful Kindoroko Hotel, where the steaks were delicious and the alcohol flowed. Hakuna Matata shots, i'll miss them the most!!!
Just outside Moshi was our first stop... the Mweka Primary School! Greeted by hundreds of smiling, laughing faces! We never felt so welcome! We were delighted to be able to help the local craftsmen plaster the school walls and paint the classrooms, teaching english to the kids when we could. Teaching us Swahili didn't fair as well to our untrained tongues, although we managed a few words!! We soon found out with the young guys that football was the universal language of Africa :D
Longido was our next stop, a small town north of Arusha, 2 hours away from Moshi on the Kenya-Tanzania border. This was our first glimpse of Maasai culture. What an extraordinary group of people they are! As they guided us up Mount Longido, a teaser for Mount Kilimanjaro, they never ceased to amaze us with their knowledge of plant and animal life. This leaf.... soothes burns, these flowers.... cures migraine, this twig..... a menthol toothbrush.... the list was endless! Bear Grylls had nothing on them! Their way of life was a shock to all of us, mud huts, no electrcity, running water if they were lucky. And calm as the warriors looked, as they patrolled the edges of their camp for lions, with spears in hand ready to pounce at a moments notice, they always made you feel very safe.
No sooner had we become accustomed to the Maasai way of life, we embarked on the most incredible Safari trip, to the Ngorongoro Crater. This fertile plateau seemed to stretch forever into the distance, and was flourishing with all kinds of animals, big and small. From the galloping herds of zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest, to the majestic walk of the elephants and giraffes, the crater was also home to the big five of rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. And apart from the elusive leopard we got intimate views of all the wildlife!
And then the day arrived! Our first steps on the road to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free standing mountain in the world!! At first it was an easy hike, and everyone was full of energy, enjoying the company and unusual surroundings. And before we knew it, a few days into our climb, we were above the first layer of clouds! What a feeling to be looking down on what we'd only ever seen from a plane!!! It seemed as if you could just step out onto them and chase the sun as it set over the horizon. Another day of trekking, stories were flowing, jokes were told, and everyone was reminiscing shared childhood memories. It really brought our group closer together and was welcomed..... with what still lay ahead! More trekking, more climbing, aches and pains, wind burns and numbness, it all became common place until we reached Kibo Huts, the last stop before summit day. It was a hard climb, but the hardest was yet to come, and we knew it. After heading to our tents early, we awoke at midnight to the frigid temperature, but with the determination to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise. We set off, not entirely sure of what to expect. This was definitely harder than the last four days combined, the temperature fell the more we ascended, and by Gilman's Point at 5681m it was -20'C. Suddenly two pairs of gloves and three pairs of socks didn't seem so silly anymore! The summit felt so close! Slowly and steadily we continued on, crunching the ice and snow under our boots, willing our muscles to go just that little bit further. The wind was against us, and sent constant shivers through our worn out bodies. And then, like a light at the end of a tunnel, the sign at the summit slowly came into view through the clearing snowfall. We had made it! The overall sense of relief was indescribable, for that moment we felt like we were on top of the world! And as we got closer and closer, the sun began to rise, silhouetting the ever welcoming sign of Uhuru Peak at 5,895m Emotions ran high, the adrenaline surging through every part of you, the feeling of success was overwhelming! Yeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaa!
So we travelled to Tanzania as a group of individuals, with our own experiences and memories, to leave with a common appreciation for the wonders of Africa and all it has to offer! Those new found memories will stay with us forever, and the people will always hold a special place in our lives........ by far, one of the greatest decisions ever made :)

TANZANIA - SERENGETI SAFARI - BIG FIVE GAME ANIMALS
In this video Barbara talks about seeing - one of the BIG FIVE - what is that all about? Hint - BIG does not necessarily mean SIZE. The term big five game (usually capitalized or quoted as Big Five) was coined by big-game hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. Subsequently the term was adopted by safari tour operators for marketing purposes. The term is used in most tourist and wildlife guides that discuss African wildlife safaris. The members of the Big Five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and the degree of danger involved, rather than their size. So what Aftican animals are the BIG FIVE - have a look and remember they are the most difficult animals to hunt on foot.
The big five are among the most dangerous, yet most popular species for big-game hunters to hunt.[4]

TRIP TO SERENGETI - AFRICA
The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa. It is located in north Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya between latitudes 1 and 3 S and longitudes 34 and 36 E. It spans some 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq mi).
The Serengeti hosts the largest mammal migration in the world, which is one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world.[1]
The region contains several national parks and game reserves. Serengeti is derived from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically, Serengit meaning Endless Plains.[2][3]
Approximately 70 larger mammal and some 500 avifauna species are found there. This high diversity in terms of species is a function of diverse habitats ranging from riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands.[4] Blue Wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalos are some of the commonly found large mammals in the region.
Currently there is controversy surrounding a proposed road that is to be built through the Serengeti in Tanzania.
Great Migration
Around October, nearly two million herbivores travel from the northern hills toward the southern plains, crossing the Mara River, in pursuit of the rains. In April, they then return to the north through the west, once again crossing the Mara River. This phenomenon is sometimes called the Circular Migration.
Some 250,000 wildebeest die during the journey from Tanzania to Maasai Mara Reserve in lower Kenya, a total of 800 kilometres (500 mi). Death is usually from thirst, hunger, exhaustion, or predation.[1] The migration is chronicled in the 1994 documentary film, Africa: The Serengeti. In early 2007 J.Michael Fay had found another large migration in Southern Sudan, of about 800,000 kob and tiang, which now rivals the migration in the Serengeti.

Maasailand has East Africa's finest game areas.[8] The governments of Tanzania and Kenya maintain a number of Protected Areas: parks, conservation areas, game reserves, etc. that give legal protection to over 80% of the Serengeti.[4]
Ol Doinyo Lengai, the only active volcano in the area of the Serengeti, is the only volcano that still ejects carbonatite lavas. This material, upon exposure to air, changes from black to white and resembles washing soda. A thick layer of ash can turn into a calcium rich hardpan as tough as cement after being rained upon. Tree roots cannot penetrate this layer, and the essentially treeless plains of the Serengeti, which lie to the west and down wind of Ol Doinyo Lengai, are the result.[9]
The southeastern area lies in the rain shadow of the Ngorongoro highlands and is composed of shortgrass treeless plains with abundant small dicots. Soils are high in nutrients, overlying a shallow calcareous hardpan. A gradient of soil depth northwestward across the plains results in changes in the herbaceous community and taller grass. Some 70 km (43 mi) west, Acacia woodlands appear suddenly and stretch west to Lake Victoria and north to the Loita Plains, north of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The 16 Acacia species vary over this range, their distribution determined by edaphic conditions and soil depth. Near Lake Victoria there are flood plains developed from ancient lakebeds. In the far northwest, Acacia woodlands are replaced by broadleaved Terminalia-Combretum woodlands, determined by a change in geology.
This area has the highest rainfall in the system and forms a refuge for the migrating ungulates at the end of the dry season.[10][11]
Altitudes in the Serengeti range from 920 to 1,850 metres (3,020 to 6,070 ft) with mean temperatures varying from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Although the climate is usually warm and dry, rainfall occurs in two rainy seasons: March to May, and a shorter season in October and November. Rainfall amounts vary from a low of 508 mm (20 in) in the lee of the Ngorongoro Highlands to a high of 1,200 mm (47 in) on the shores of Lake Victoria.[12] The highlands, which are considerably cooler than the plains and are covered by montane forest, mark the eastern border of the basin in which the Serengeti lies.
The Serengeti plain is punctuated by granite outcroppings known as kopjes. These outcroppings are the result of volcanic activity. Kopjies provide a microhabitat for non-plains wildlife. One kopje likely to be seen by visitors to the Serengeti is the Simba Kopje (Lion Kopje). The Serengeti was used as inspiration for the animated Disney feature film The Lion King and subsequent theatrical production.
The area is also home to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which contains the Olduvai Gorge, where some of the oldest hominid fossils are found, as well as the Ngorongoro Crater.
