10 Things to do in Gdańsk, Poland Travel Guide
Join us as we visit Gdańsk, Poland in this travel guide exploring the top attractions and best things to do in Gdansk (Danzig). As the final and northernmost destination we visit during our time in Poland this port city is one of the coolest places we've visited on this particular trip through Europe. From cobbled streets to posh museums to river cruises you'll find something for everyone here. One thing we noticed was that it was considerably more expensive in terms of accommodations and food compared with other Polish cities we've visited; however, it has charms that more than make up for it.

Our visit Gdańsk travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, churches and museums. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Gdańsk tourism brochure, Gdańsk itinerary or Gdańsk, Poland city tour.
10 Things to do in Gdańsk, Poland Travel Guide script:
After visiting the Basilica, we walked over to the main pedestrian street in Gdansk: Dluga, also known as Long Street. Unlike most Polish cities, Gdansk doesn’t have a main square, but this stretch of road acts as the equivalent with lots of vendors and performers along the way.
On the west end of Dluga (Dooga) we came across the Amber Museum, which sounded a little unusual, so we bought tickets and went up. Here we learned the history of Amber trade in the Baltic, and we also discovered that the tower that now houses the museum, was once a prison and torture chamber.
Not done with museums just yet, our next stop was the Historical Museum of the City of Gdansk. I think we spent more time staring at the ornate doorways, ceilings and staircases, than we did at the exhibit itself!
Here, we also saw the Medieval Crane, which was first mentioned in texts in 1367, and was at one point the biggest working crane in the world.
Next, it was all aboard the SS Sołdek, a Polish coal and ore freighter which is now a ship-museum.
And since we’re on the topic of food, we need to show you a milk bar we really enjoyed.
On our last day in Gdansk, we walked over to the European Solidarity Centre, which is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Old Town. The museum tells the story of Solidarity, a Polish trade union and civil resistance movement, founded in 1980 at the Lenin Shipyard. This was the first union not controlled by the communist party, and it’s a fascinating museum to learn a bit more about the history.
And that’s a wrap for our Gdansk travel guide. We hope you guys enjoyed this video and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Gdansk on you visit. You know the drill, if you have any other tips or suggestions to share with travellers, feel free to pop those in the comments section below. Happy travels and until next time!

Gdansk, Poland - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Gdansk
Top best places to visit in Gdansk
Gdansk is the largest city in the north of Poland and a principal seaport on the Baltic coast.
It used to be called Free City of Gdansk, today is called City of Freedom. The most central point of the city is the Neptune’s Fountain. Located by the entrance to Artus Court next to the Main Town Hall, ...it is at the crossroad of the Long Lane and the Long Market. This two streets are one of the most notable tourist attractions of the city. At the end of the Long Street there is the Golden Gate, and on the way there are a lot of interesting, colorful and important architecture like the Uphagen House and the Windows Theater. The Green Gate is on the other end of the Long Market. It used to be a merchant road and now it’s a main artery. Behind Green Gate flows Motlawa River, and along it stretches Long Bridge with picturesque brick buildings, apartments, moored vessels and the Crane, which acted both as a cargo port and a defensive gate.
In the heart of the Main Town lies a narrow, cobblestone, medieval St. Mary’s street. You can find there rich ornamentation and gargoyles, This is also a good place to buy souvenirs made of amber... At the end of St. Mary’s Street there is St. Mary’s Church which is supposedly the largest brick church in the world with a stunning 360-degree view of the city. The church was completed at the beginning of the sixteenth century. It can fit nearly 20,000 people. Inside is located an ancient astronomical clock from the fifteenth century.
In Gdansk there are several places of glory and a special remembrance particularly important for the local community, such sites include Polish Post Office Museum, Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970, Monument is located near European Solidarity Center and Gdansk’s Shipyard. And Westerplatte, a national memorial and museum site dedicated to Polish soldiers at the beginning of the Second World War.
One of the most famous person born in Gdansk was astronomer Jan Heweliusz. He made many interesting cosmic observations. Gdansk has also very modern stadium with more than 40 000 seats
and even if you are not a football fun it’s worth a visit.

THIS IS WHY EVERYONE SHOULD VISIT GDAŃSK - SHIPYARD
Today we visited a very important location in Gdańsk where a lot of history has happened in 1980's. We were blow away with Solidarity Museum and we learned so much in just couple of hours.
You can also have a guided tour around Shipyard but we chose to explore it ourselves.
After seeing all the cranes and old ships, you can head to 100cznia where you can find lots of cool bars, eateries and cool music. We HIGHLY recommend visit the Shipyard once you're in Gdańsk.

GDANSK, POLAND - MY NEW FAVORITE CITY IN POLAND!
Two weeks ago I spent 7 days in Poland catching up with a good friend of mine! We spent most of our time in Krakow and Warsaw, but had outbound flights from the city of Gdansk. Originally we had planned to spend at least three days there, but the nightlife in Krakow had us stuck! We headed to Gdansk only the day before flights and as soon as I got my first taste of Gdansk I had immediately regretted that decision! The city was just so incredibly beautiful and I'm so looking forward to heading back! Hope you enjoy this video!

Siedem promów w Gdańskiej Stoczni Remontowa SA - Seven ferries in Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard SA
7 passenger and car ferries of leading European shipowners stayed at the same time in Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard S.A., not counting two others that sailed a few days earlier. The Polish shipyard thus broke its record for the previous years.

Solidarnosc Museum, Gdańsk, Pomeranian, Poland, Polska, Europe
Although Solidarity was officially christened in 1980, its roots can be traced some ten years earlier. Protesting against plunging living standards workers at the Lenin Shipyards called a strike, with the army promptly called in to intervene. Bloody clashes led to the deaths of 45 people, and ultimately forced Wladyslaw Gormulka out of power. Replaced by Edward Gierek, his half-mad economic policies served to create an illusion of prosperity, as well as generating a flush of jobs in Gdansk's Nowy Port area. But the memory of 1970 did not fade and Gdansk remained a ticking bomb for the authorities. With the seventies drawing to a close tensions started to rise again, with living standards falling and the economy in huge debt built on massive foreign loans.
In August, 1980 the dismissal of a female crane operator at Gdansk's Lenin Shipyards provided the spark for workers to go on strike. Workers already disillusioned with price increases and the falling value of their salaries were ready to take action. Lech Walesa and other activists were already planning strike action but it soon became clear that momentum within the yard was growing quickly and it was this that spurred Walesa to famously scale the wall of the Lenin shipyard to take control. Walesa with his trademark sharp trading managed to steer his colleagues away from mere wage demands towards the idea of creating a trade union movement to represent the workers and to fight injustice. This time the workers learned from the mistakes of 1970 and did not confront the authorities but instead locked themselves into the shipyards. Three days later leaders representing workers from over 150 industrial plants met in the shipyards to hammer out 21 demands, including the legalisation of independent trade unions. Days of tension followed, with tanks and armed units stationed menacingly outside the gates of the shipyards. On August 31 the government backed down, agreeing to meet the 21 demands - thereby marking the first peaceful victory over communism. A month later, on September 22, delegates from 36 regional unions met in Gdansk forming a coalition under the name of Solidarity. Lech Walesa, the unlikely hero of August, was elected as chairman. The next few months marked a golden period for the nation; some ten million people joined the Solidarity movement, and Poland enjoyed a freedom unknown for decades.
Riding the crest of a wave Solidarity continued to lobby for further reforms and free elections, infuriating the Kremlin. With Soviet invasion a looming threat the Polish President, General Jaruzelski, declared a state of martial law on December 13, 1981, and tanks once again rolled through the streets. Though Solidarity was officially dissolved, and its leaders imprisoned, it continued to operate underground. When Father Jerzy Popieluszko, Solidarity's chaplain, was abducted and murdered by the secret police over a million people attended his funeral.
Renewed labour strikes and a faltering economy forced Jaruzelski into initiating talks with opposition figures in 1988, and the following year Solidarity was once again granted legal status. Participating in Poland's first post-communist election the party swept to victory, with Wałęsa leading from the front. In spite of overseeing Poland's transition to a market economy, Solidarity gradually found their power being eroded by the emergence of fresher political parties. The 2000 elections for the Sejm (lower parliament) sounded the death knell for the party. Failing to even make the minimum vote to qualify for representation in parliament, the party which changed history found itself essentially vanishing from the political map.
