Simply there is no written history account of the rise and fall of Gedi.
The inhabitants were of Muslim descent, had established quite a trading system according excavations , but sadly, due to lack of written records no one can factually give an insight into life at Gede Ruins. All there is to depend on, the information available and your imagination! as you get lost in this mystery of the past.
The archaeological puzzle that remains a mystery to historians up to this date is that, excavations of the Gedi city that were carried out between 1948 and 1958 have uncovered porcelain from China, an Indian lamp, Venetian beads, Spanish scissors, and other interesting vestiges from all over the world, which proves that whoever occupied Gedi city were engaged in international trade, just as current day Mombasa city.
Questions still remain as to what caused the downfall of Gedi Kenya, but by the 16th century, the city was abandoned. Warring factions are believed to have been a possible cause for Gedi's ultimate abandonment.
The ruins consist of a palace, mosque, and several houses tomb stones that visitors can explore on a trip to the Ruins. The good thing about Gedi is its unique location that it's easily accessible from Watamu, Malindi or Mombasa, and this is especially true if you are staying in one of the Kenya's beach resorts, the trip to Gedi will cost you very little!

Today the ruins of Gedi have the special atmosphere of crumbled medieval stone, one story buildings in a mystical, foggy forest. Gedi was an important medieval Swahili-Arab trade center that was occupied from the 11th until the 17th century. Standing buildings include mosques, houses and a palace. It has been one of the most thoroughly investigated Swahili-Arab sites. It is located in eastern Kenya near the Indian Ocean in the Kilifi District and within the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest.

The 3D Model incl. the Gede Palace, the great Mosque, the small Mosque and all surounding buildings of the Swaheli Town.
This 3D Model is produced by the Zamani Project (University of Cape Town) as part of the African Cultural Heritage Sites and landscapes documentation project. It is derived from high resolution terrestrial Laser-Scan data and represents the site as is with cm accuracy and without any augmentation. For presentation purposes a low-resolution model was used.

Gede Ruins and Watamu beach ????????
On my almost last day we went to see one of the oldest ruins in Eastern Africa in Gede.
There is also Kenya national museum and Butterfly farm.
On way back we stopped in Watamu beach which is one of most beautiful beach in Kenya and there we met few Masai people.

Watamu, Kenya - Gede Ruins (Kilifi County) February 2010
My dear Brenda Otieno was showing me around her country of Kenya. We were at the Gede ruins. This particular video shows us in a high tree.

Gede (also known as Gedi) is a village on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya, lying in Kilifi County, south of Malindi and north of Watamu. The Ruins of Gedi are located there. Although not thought to be mentioned in historic sources, extensive ruins of a former port have been dated to the thirteenth century or earlier, including a tomb with a date corresponding to 1399, until at least the seventeenth century. Later, the port was abandoned and not rediscovered until the 1920s.
The buildings are of coral, earth and plaster, some with designs inscribed. They include a mosque, palace, houses and tombs as well as a fort. The style is classified as Swahili architecture.
The modern village is home to a museum and a butterfly house.
Gede was part of the Malindi District (until it was eliminated in 2010) and it has an urban population of 596 in 2005.

Located in the Kenya Coast, Munarani is one of ruins run by the National Museum of Kenya. The Ruins depict a Arab African City that existed in the 14th Century. The town is beleived to have been build in the early 14th Century.
