Today we visit a local Indonesian market at Central Java in the city of Surakarta, often called Solo! We tried the following traditional Indonesian snacks:
-Lenjongan: Javanese food comprised of many sweet cakes! Often made with cassava, tapioca, or coconut.
-Brambang Asem: a sweet and savoury Indonesian snack made up of sweet potato leaf and tofu deposit. Careful of that spicy kick ;)
-Grontol: boiled corn with grated coconut on top
-Dawet Selasih: refreshing Indonesian beverage with coconut milk and other sweets inside!

We start the day at Pasar Gede, the oldest traditional market in Solo. We’re here to eat a couple of dishes- the first being lenjongan, the collective term for sweets and snacks made from tapioca flour and rice flour. A portion comes wrapped inside a banana leaf and drizzled with palm sugar and sprinkled with desiccated coconut. Chewy, sticky and sweet- this traditional food is a must eat when in Solo. Our next snack is es dawet- a refreshing mix of coconut milk, cendol, ice and palm sugar syrup and a popular snack or drink all over Indonesia. The version in Solo ups the ante by adding tape (fermented glutinous rice), basil seeds and black sticky rice to the already addictive concoction.
Our next stop is for one of Solo's most popular meals: tengkleng. A mash up of goat ribs, bones and offal served in a watery, spice filled stew over rice. If you visit this stall, be prepared to wait as its fans are many and service moves at a leisurely pace. We wait for over an hour for one of the last portions and it is worth it. The broth is light but full of fragrant spices and the generous ladleful soaks into the rice. Sucking the bone marrow out of the bones and slurping up spoonfuls of rice and broth whilst perched on a plastic stool in the heat is a quintessential Solo experience.
Come evening time we head to Nasi Liwet Bu Sarmi to eat Nasi Liwet. Rice is cooked in coconut milk and chicken broth and served with poached chicken and tender slices of chayote. Conveniently located next-door is Susu Murni Shi Jack. A popular evening pastime in Solo is to gather with friends and drink fresh hot milk and snack. We do like the locals do and order glasses of creamy, fresh milk flavoured with honey, the other with chocolate. Stick with the more natural flavours we reckon as they’re less sweet.
Where we ate:
Lenjongan at Pasar Gede, Jl. Jend. Urip Sumoharjo, Sudiroprajan, Jebres, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57121. Open morning until afternoon.
Es Dawet at Es Dawet Telasih Bu Dermi, Pasar Gede, Jl. Jend. Urip Sumoharjo, Sudiroprajan, Jebres, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57121. Open morning until afternoon.
Tengkleng at Tengkleng Klewer Bu Edi, opposite Pasar Klewer Solo, Jalan Doktor Radjiman, Gajahan, Kauman, Ps. Kliwon, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57122. Sets up in the tents in the carpark opposite the entrance of the market. Open from midday until sold out (around 3:00pm). Be prepared to wait!
Nasi liwet at Nasi Liwet Bu Sarmi, Jl. Kapten Mulyadi, Kedung Lumbu, Ps. Kliwon, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57133. Open daily 6:00pm to midnight.
Hot milk at Susu Murni Shi Jack, Jl. Kapten Mulyadi No.103, Ps. Kliwon, Kota Surakarta, Jawa Tengah 57133. Open daily in the evenings.

Klewer Market Solo Indonesia / Famous Market in Central Java
The Pasar Klewer (Hanging Market, a 2-storey department) is the best place to get original batik and, Pasar Klewer doesn't have as much rubbish as Yogya's big Pasar Beringhardjo. Children's clothes are unbeliavably cheap, although bargaining is obligatory here and if you're buying cap/imprint batik look over carefully for holes!
What to buy: Wanna buy the best batik (batik tulis), then you better visit the 2nd floor, ... that is if you can make it. It is execrably hot around hundreds of stalls which offer their ware, and the best things are less inclined to bargain, also on the 2nd ... Stumbling around see the colorful stalls, too ...
Try to get some striking lurik material, that is natural cotton, rough to the touch like Indian cotton but softens with age. With striped, colorful patterns, lurik is an hot item. And you might meet tailors who make custom-made clothes in one day! If you find the time they are fabulous!

Off the west gate of Karaton's North Square, this old market selling all kinds of fabrics, predominantly batik. Other traditional fabrics are lurik (hand-woven striped cotton cloth) and tenun ikat. There are hundreds of shops jammed along narrow passageways. The visitors must be prepared to bargain. Batik cloths and garments, hand-woven fabrics, traditional and local jewelry, leather puppets, basketry, tortoise-shell accessories, trinkets, brassware and other decorative items, and all kinds of antiques are local specialties. Souvenir and art objects are available in all major towns of Central Java, mostly in the downtown areas and popular market places or shopping centers.

NASI LIWET BU SRI PASAR GEDE, KULINER SOLO PAGI
Selamat mencoba......

We start the day with serabi- a sweet treat made from rice flour and coconut milk. At Mrs Lidya’s Serabi Notosuman dozens of small pans are set up in which to make this popular snack. Serabi are sold in packs of ten and you can opt for the original or chocolate variety. The chocolate come sprinkled with chocolate sprinkles which melt into the gooey coconut centre. Delicate and crispy on the outer edges and warm, thick and gluggy on the inside- serabi are a must eat if you have a sweet tooth!
Our next stop is for one of Indonesia’s most popular meals or snacks- bakso! Bakso or meatballs are usually served in a soup together with noodles, some vegetables and fried shallots. The beef meatballs are springy and slightly chewy and its said that bakso Solo has bigger meatballs than ones you might find elsewhere.
We then head to a quirky restaurant which offers selat Solo a dish unique to Solo and made up of beef steak and vegetables in a sweet gravy. It’s a classic fusion dish with Javanese and European influences.
In the evening vendors who sell sate, fried noodles and fried rice start plying their trade. We eat smoky chicken sate at Sate Ayam Pak Banjir Kampung Baru where a simple grill is set up right on the footpath and swathes of smoke stream onto the road. We follow the sate up with Javanese fried noodles and fried rice from President Jokowi’s favourite stall- simple, honest food cooked well!
