Geelong Gallery
I am a massive supporter of art in Geelong, which is why I met with a team from the gallery this week to discuss their plans for the future.
The proposed expansion of the Geelong Art Gallery into City Hall is wonderful for our city. This why I have pledged that if elected I will ensure that the Art Gallery receives the $650,000 required for planning to begin immediately and propose that council moves into temporary accommodation so that restoration and development works can begin as quickly as possible.
My vision is for Geelong to be an arts hub. While mayor the beautifying of Geelong started, we opened up Little Malop St and worked to complete the library. This development of the Art Gallery could be the start of a designated Arts Precinct in Geelong, which is important as our city grows.
The gallery is currently restricted by a lack of space, storage and access where as it should be a focal point of our community and a destination to visit in Geelong. In recent years the Gallery has brought in amazing attractions such as the Archibald Prize and we need to support this great Geelong institution.
Director & CEO, Jason Smith shares Geelong Gallery’s aspirations for a redevelopment
Recently, members of the Board of Geelong Gallery and Senior Management team toured the Geelong Town Hall, as part of the City of Greater Geelong Council’s process to obtain a new building that will consolidate the organisation's operations in the city centre. The proposed move leaves both the Town Hall and Conference Centre potentially free for renewed use, with the possibility for Geelong Gallery to expand its facilities.
Have your say and endorse the proposed relocation of City of Greater Geelong from the Geelong Town Hall by completing the community consultation form:

Reflections on the collection—Rob McHaffie, winner of the 2014 Geelong contemporary art prize
On Friday 29 August 2014, Geelong Gallery announced Rob McHaffie as the recipient of the '2014 Geelong contemporary art prize' for his bright, colourful and whimsical painting, 'Preserve this fruit' (2013).
This award-winning work—the first by McHaffie to be acquired by the Geelong Gallery—depicts a singular figure of an elderly man in profile in a style reminiscent of Asian shadow puppets and temple paintings.
McHaffie constructs an imaginary narrative between this elderly gentleman—representative of traditional Thai life—and the silk entrepreneur Jim Thompson, who in the years after the Second World War, reinvigorated the Thai silk industry.
This video explores Rob McHaffie's artistic practice and the intentions behind his award-winning painting whilst also hearing from two of the co-judges, Geoffrey Edwards (Director, Geelong Gallery) and Lisa Sullivan (Curator, Geelong Gallery).
Geelong Gallery gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Bayside City Council’s Artist in Residence program at Billilla Mansion Studios and, in particular, Mark Potter (Cultural Development Officer).
We would also like to warmly thank the following people for their involvement and support throughout the making of this film: Rob McHaffie (artist), Ross Bird (videographer) and Jesse Marlow (stills photographer).
The '2014 Geelong contemporary art prize' showcases the best of contemporary Australian painting practice. This $30,000 acquisitive painting award and biennial exhibition features over 40 works by some of Australia’s leading and emerging artists. On display at the Geelong Gallery until 23 November 2014.
