13th Annual Geelong All Holden Day: Classic Restos Series 34
Fletch heads of to Geelong In Victoria for one Australia's largest Holden events - The Geelong All Holden Day run by the FX-HZ Holden Car Club Of Geelong. If it is was made by Holden you will find it here, with every model of Holden car represented in a massive display with Holden owners and enthusiasts travelling hundreds of kilometres to attend this event. Fletch gets out and about to talk with owners about their cars and their origins. First up is Al with a 1971 HQ 2 Door Coupe, and Rod with his original unblemished 1971 LC Torana. Fletch in his own inimitable style does his version of a promotional video for the very first Holden 48/215 sedan and talks with Raymond, owner of a 1955 FJ Holden that he has owned for 49 years and purchased for $500 from Holden dealer Dustings of Burwood. Finally, there's Daniel with his 1962 EJ Holden Sedan adorned with an excessive amount of aftermarket accessories. Geelong Classic Truck & Machinery Show: Classic Restos Series 39
This week Classic Resto is all about steam engines and Fletch gives a quick history lesson on the development of the steam engine that took some 100 years before Scottish Inventor James Watt was acknowledged as the creator of the new common steam engine. The steam engine revolutionised the industry and became the new standard of technology at the time.
The Geelong Classic Truck & Machinery showcases some magnificent machines, large and small. These engines represent the history of industry and agriculture in Australia, the owners and operators of these machines, Australia's pioneers.
Some of the displays include the engine from the ship, the JP Webb, a 30-tonne triple expansion, the 1000hp steam engine that dredged the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. Smaller more intricate examples of steam engines include a Hit-and-Miss four-stroke internal combustion engine that is controlled by a governor to operate at a set speed, precise engineering and a delight to watch.
We move on to the Tractor section of the show to find Angela with a 1919 Moline tractor, that despite its appearance was at the forefront of engineering at the time. Other tractors include a 1954 Nutfield Tractor, and a late 1950's White Oliver called the 'Mighty Tow'.
But the main event and the real crowd stopper is the Tractor Tow competition. A practical demonstration of power and torque. But it's not that simple there are rules and classes to consider. But this is massive when it comes to power and grunt and a very hotly contested competition
This event is worthy of a trip to Geelong. A step back in time.

Fred's Films: ARC Cement Works Geelong [excerpt]
The A.R.C Cement Works, Geelong, in the early 1960s is faithfully captured here by Fred Daley, steam train enthusiast and 8mm home movie maker. Fred has recorded a moment in industry that - post 2000 - no longer exists, that of the use of powerful steam locomotives. With the 'loco' pulling people on this occasion and not cement, this is most likely a farewell celebration to the use of the engines at the Plant. Fred's titles tell us it is 3ft 6 Gauge and there is a close up on an engine name-plate indicating this engine had come all the way from Manchester and another 1903 Leeds, Hudswell Clarke & Co Ltd No. 646, a smaller black engine that had obviously been a working machine at the Cement Works for many a year. There is a sense of this being quite an occasion with many people visiting to take pictures and enjoy the plumes of steam from these majestic work horses.
Fred's Films. ARC Cement Works Geelong [excerpt] (Circa 1963) is just one of the many that we are digitising. Discover more about the process on our website.

The Holden Story: That's Our Car!
In this video from the ABC Science vault, Justin Murphy re-traces the history of the Australian car industry from the original Australian-made car, the 1901 Tarrant, through war, depression and war again - events that lead to the production of the first Holden.
It’s a tale of challenges and triumphs as well as missed opportunities, and contains extensive and rare interviews with Sir Laurence Hartnett, the man who did more than anyone to create the local industry.
This program was first broadcast in 1986, shortly after Sir Laurence passed away. It remains a definitive account of how the Australian car industry came to be.

Kawasaki Australia HQ visit - Penrith Motorcycles
Last Saturday I was lucky enough to be invited by James from Penrith Motorcycle Centre to visit the Kawasaki Australia Head Quarters.
It was a chilly but fantastic day , and all riders seemed to really enjoy the day.
We also had an opportunity to ask questions of the Kawasaki HQ workers about future products, and many other elements of Kawasaki.
Check out Penrith Motorcycle Centre here.
