The gorge was named in honour of Sir Archibald Geikie, the Director General of Geological Survey for Great Britain and Ireland when it was given its European name in 1883.

Destination WA - Fitzroy Crossing Part 2
Fitzroy Crossing - I can certainly recommend it. There's some wonderful character buildings here set amongst a tropical forest. Very friendly feel to the place.
Fitzroy Crossing is the gateway to the Geikie Gorge National Park. Known for it's spectacular waterway with soaring weathered cliffs and abundant wildlife.
Fitzroy River Lodge is located on the banks of the mighty Fitzroy River. It's iconic surroundings and true country vibes; make it a must when travelling along the Great Northern Highway.
Touring Australia; Geikie Gorge
Geikie Gorge is located on the Fitzroy River near the town of Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia. The light coloured rock indicates the high water mark during the wet season. On a good day you might see quite a bit of birdlife, wallabies and crocs sunning themselves along the banks.

It takes about four hours east of Broome to reach the Keikyu Gorge, which occurred about 350 million years ago. Named after British explorer Keikyu, it is famous for a boat ride up and down the river. But the ticket office has some unusual signs. It seems to have written the year and the height, but it is attached from the floor to the ceiling. What do these many records mean? In the rainy season, the river flooded and flooded seven times. More in this area. You see traces of flooding here? In 2002, the water went up to 2M above the roof. I can not imagine how much water would have flown. I would have gone back and forth a great deal. Since October, after the rainy season, it is said that the water will be closed enough so that it can not be easily imagined. I started a boat tour. I climbed the canyon at a slow pace. The steep limestone cliffs of the Keikyu canyon are 50 meters high and 14 kilometers long, which is said to be the world's most well-preserved paleozoic reef. The bottom of the canyon is a beautiful hole created by the erosion of millions of years. I admire the art of sculpture created by water. The colors and shapes that are made there are all beautiful shadows. And the history here is also interesting. It's great when you think of it as a place that retains its long past. It was an era before fossils. There are only a few traces of life, and it is really fascinating. The crocodiles become breeds of breed, and birds and various animals remain as they are in the wild. It's a pretty mysterious place. There are huge rocks and you can see crocodiles and wallabies. This is all fantastic.
