We have the flexibility to make stops along the route, so you can experience how people traditionally traveled to Geiranger before the development of the road network.

Day 2/4 Trollstigen-Geiranger Fjord- Stranda Drive

It was drizzling when we left Åndalsnes early in the morning and drove half an hour to Trollstigen. We took the famous Road 63, also called the Golden Route, which offered such spectacular views. Normally this road opens late May and closes late October because of deep snow and avalanches during the winter. The road twists through 11 hairpin bends, and a waterfall Stigfossen is located in the middle.
At the top is a viewpoint, café and souvenir shops that usually open during the summer. It took us an hour or two at the viewpoint since clouds covered the view, and had to wait until it cleared off, then continued the trip to Geiranger.
The drive and the view was so dramatic and surreal -lush valleys, strawberry farms in Valldal, countless waterfall, lakes at the top of the mountains, farms, unique style cabins and a lot to be discovered. I recently learned from a friend that Valldall has the sweetest strawberry in Norway and sadly, we didn't try one. It was like a feast in the eye. Cabins or “hytta” which is very popular here can be seen at mountain tops end ridges and even on the narrowest mountain ledge.
Norway has more than 50 000 islands, and travelling from Valldal to Geiranger required a ferry ride, along with the car of course.
Expect a lot of downward and upward slopes when driving to Geiranger. Actually it was the best decision that we didn´t took the return cruise because as noon came, the road became too busy and crowded. Just watch the video and see how Geirangerfjord looks like, because I cannot even describe the feeling.
Unfortunately, it was raining when we reached the town of Geiranger. It was small and crowded because of the number of tourists and look how massive the cruise was, which estimates thousand heads in there. It took us almost 30 minutes looking for a place to park and eat.
It is recommended to book the cruise beforehand just to secure a place, especially if you have a car. Though it was still raining when we boarded the ferry, we still managed to enjoy the view, but still, it was crowded and I was a little bit disappointed. We docked at the town of Stranda, where we booked our stay for our second night. The ski resort was far from the town center, and since it was raining, visibility along the road was poor. But it was all worth the drive. The cabin was so perfect to end this tiring but spectacular and unforgettable day!

Visit to Geiranger June 4, 2013 at a Vision of the Seas Cruise from Copenhagen.
The easiest way to see two of Geiranger's famous viewpoints (Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen - *Eagle bend*) on a short round trip by bus. Many departures from the town center to Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen. Tickets at the Tourist information office on the pier or online.

(EN) The Geiranger Fjordis a fjord in the Sunnmøre region of Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located entirely in the Stranda Municipality. It is a 15-kilometre (9.3 mi) -long branch off the Sunnylvsfjorden, which is a branch off the Storfjorden (Great Fjord). The small village of Geiranger is located at the end of the fjord where the Geirangelva river empties into it.

This is where I did my district or family practice part of Turnustjeneste - which is the Norwegian foundation program or internship between being a medical student and fully authorized physician. I stayed on in Stranda for another 1/2 year as kommunelege - municipal physician, starting my specialization as a general practitioner.

Geiranger
Geiranger é uma povoação da Noruega, situada na comuna de Stranda. Localiza-se na parte mais interior do Fiorde de Geiranger, um braço do Fiorde grande, em Møre og Romsdal.
Tem cerca de 240 habitantes permanentes. Nos meses de Verão, este número ascende aos 2000 habitantes. É rodeada por uma paisagem impressionante, que fez dela um dos locais mais visitados da Noruega, com cerca de 700 000 visitantes anuais. Dispõe de 5 hotéis e cerca de 8 outros locais de alojamento.
É o terceiro maior porto de navios de cruzeiro, recebendo cerca de 160 barcos durante a estação turística de quatro meses, entre Maio e Setembro. Durante esse período, é visitada por cententas de turistas. No resto do ano, a actividade é reduzida à de uma pacata povoação norueguesa.
Desde 2005, o Fiorde de Geiranger figura na lista do património da humanidade, da Unesco.
Todos os anos se realiza uma prova de atletismo, chamada Frå fjord til fjel (do fiorde até à montanha), consistindo de meia maratona, marcha e outras modalidades semelhantes, com partida do centro de Geiranger, até ao topo da montanha Dalsnibba, a 1497 metros de altitude

Hellesylt
Hellesylt is a small village in the municipality of Stranda, Norway. Its population in 2007 was about 600. Hellesylt lies at the head of the Sunnylvsfjord, which is a branch of the Storfjord (Great Fjord), and which the more famous Geirangerfjord in turn branches off nearby.
In the summertime, thousands of tourists travel through or stay at Hellesylt each day. Most of them take the ferry to Geiranger, which in high season runs every one and a half hour. The village is surrounded by mountains and valleys.

As there is still a lot of snow left in the mountains at that time of year, the race could also be called From Summer to Winter.

Road 63 through Valldal connects, Trollstigen and Geiranger, two of Norway's major attractions, to each other. Because of its natural beauty, involving both wild, alpine mountains, green fertile valleys and deep fjords, and impressive road constructions, the route was previously called the Golden Route. Now the stretch is named one of Norway's 18 National Tourist Route.

A few weeks back, a group of 8 of us took a van from Sola and took a roadtrip up to Ålesund, we had just a few days to explore the area but it was totally worth the long drive.
Definitely a trip of a lifetime.
