The Montgomery Ward Building, Kannapolis, NC - Demolition 1990
This is just one day of the demolition of Montgomery Ward Building in Kannapolis NC in 1990. My dad had just got his first video camera and we walked uptown to get it on tape. Sadly we didn't get anymore on tape, or the prior demo of the Professional Building that stood beside it. These buildings stood between A + B streets on S. Main Street in Kannapolis, this is where the Dale Earnhardt Memorial is now. The annoying kid talking is me, I was 14 at the time and a friend and I had went in the building prior to demolition, security was non-existent back then. I'll probably end up with health problems from the asbestos exposure (hope not). The building was built in the 1930's and was vacated sometime in the mid 1980's.
North Carolina Music Hall of Fame Awards
North Carolina Music Hall of Fame Awards is a segment of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas, which first aired in syndication on November 15, 2014
In this segment Carl takes us to the historic GemTheatre in Kannapolis for a night of music, glamour, and fun as some of the finest native North Carolinian musicians are inducted into the 2014 North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
This year's inductees include native North Carolinians The Embers, Fantasia, Clay Aiken, Lulu Belle and Scotty, Little Eva, Talmadge Tab Smith, Jimmy Capps, and Link Wray.
Before the show begins, Carl interviews many of the guests, asking them who they are here to see. He also speaks with Kannoplis native Elizabeth Safrit, Miss United States 2014, and 1999 North Carolina Music Hall of Fame inductee Ken Knox, who also performs in the show.
Next we get a back stage pass with Carl as he interviews Bill Kopald, the Producer and Master of Ceremonies of the Induction Ceremony. Bill gives us an intriguing peek at some of the history of the Hall of Fame and shares some interesting tidbits.
Carl also speaks with 2009 inductee Eddie Ray, now the Executive Director of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, who emphasizes the tremendous amount of musical talent that North Carolina has produced. Bill has shared with us the little known fact that Eddie is the person responsible for bringing Pink Floyd to the United States.
And then it's off to the show! As each inductee is introduced, a video montage is played featuring highlights of their career. The audience was treated to performance by several of current and past inductees as well as Link Wray's grandson Chris Wray.
Carl sums up the evening best as this episode closes: Wow! Do we have great talent here in the Carolinas!
