Gem-hunting in the mines of Pala, California - this is a time-lapse video showing the progress of digging in a pile of tailings - there's less than ten of us and we still cut the hill to about 1/2 its original size.
The main finds were multi-colored tourmalines and a golden variety of spodumene called Triphane, or yellow kunzite. the song is an original called steve Lillywhite in honor of the producer.
Opal Mountain & Rainbow Basin, near Barstow, California
Some off roading near Opal Mountain and then a visit to the Rainbow Basin. It was over cast all day so some of the colors are a bit subdued.

The Curiosity Show Ep. 13 California Gems and Gold
California isn't just the golden state, we're also a great place to find gemstones. NHM's curator of mineralogy Dr. Aaron Celestian shows us around the gem vault and behind the scenes of our mineral exhibits to learn about California's gems and reveal how gold nuggets are formed. He also reveals some tips about where to find gold nuggets, so take note! NHM has one of the world's best gem and mineral halls, with lots of California gems and gold on exhibit.
Correction: Not the largest in the world, but the largest in our collection, weighing 8.4 lbs!

California State Mining & Mineral Museum Show
My guest, Randy Bold, the Guide at the California State Mining and Mineral Museum (among many other duties) talks about The State Collection and mining in our community's history. The Museum is an important Gem and Mineral specimen collection and contains many important world class specimens. Additionally, the Museum is an important educational resource to the Mariposa County residents/school children but also serves students from around the state. The exhibits inform and educate students about the chemical make-up of various rocks found in nature and explains natural geological processes that occur in our earth and are part of an on-going process. Randy, at one time, worked as a science teacher and has a solid understanding of the science of geology. He is also an avid historian and takes visitors, and students alike, through the process of mining and mineral processing and can explain the historical development of our mining technology. Overall, this world class Museum is a major cultural resource in OUR community and Randy Bolt is a very interesting and enthusiastic man in charge of making sure that the Museum visitor has an enjoyable experience in Mariposa's important cultural desplay.

Sexy Custom Faceted Champagne Pink California Morganite Gem from KGC
Gem: Morganite (Beryl)
Weight: 1.77 cts.
Size: 8.76 mm.
Color: Pale Pink
Clarity: VS
Cut: Mumble Trillion
Locality: Stewart Mine (Stewart Lithia mine), Tourmaline Queen Mountain, Pala, Pala District, San Diego Co., California, USA
Treatment: None
San Diego County, California is well known for its rich pegmatites and exceptional gem minerals. The Stewart Mine is one of those revered localities where the gemstones and mineral specimens are highly prized. Good facet grade Morganite only comes from a few localities in the US and the other major producer is about as far from San Diego County as you can get, up in Maine. That being said, facet grade Morganite from the US is hard to come by. This stone has a pretty pale pink color and fine brilliance. The stone glitters and truly has great light return. The Morganite gem material from the Stewart Mine is rarely clean, except in small stones, which is generally acceptable because the material is so hard to get your hands on. This stone has some typical bubble inclusions that are noticeable but hardly distracting. This stone has one notable inclusion in the center, but can only be viewed from certain angles and disappears at others. This stone was faceted by Brett Kosnar of Kosnar Gem Co.
