●Seeking help from Hualien TCH
We check on the conditions of a Vietnamese patient two years after she underwent elephantiasis surgeries.
1.川物資抵達&川物資抵達
Welcome to Da Ai Headlines. I'm Siri Su. Thank you for joining us. A strong earthquake hit Sichuan, China on June 17th. In the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake, Tzu Chi volunteers have traveled to the disaster area to assess damages. At one of the affected schools, students are staying in tents. Tzu Chi volunteers have given them blankets and folding beds, so they can sleep better. Meanwhile, Tzu Chi volunteers are still preparing more aid supplies, which are delivered to the disaster areas.
2.上人新店
Natural disasters require front line responders. Looking back on the history of Tzu Chi's charity mission, a special talk was held at the Xindian Jing Si Hall. Senior Tzu Chi volunteers discussed everything from the China Airlines crash in 1998 and the deadly SARS epidemic. Each moment of history includes some touching memories.
3.陸志工出坡
Tzu Chi volunteers from Hunan, Fujian, Guangxi and other places in China came to Taiwan for the Tzu Chi Four-in-One Camp. After it was over, they stayed in Taiwan to help clean up the Hualien Jing Si Hall. From cleaning the Jing Si Hall, these volunteers learned a lot of life principles.
4.緬甸愛鋪路
In Myanmar, the road leading to a village in Taikkyi Town is very muddy during rainy seasons. It was very inconvenient for pedestrians or bikers to travel in or out of the village. Fortunately, Tzu Chi volunteers paid for building materials and initiated a work-for-relief program, paying villagers to pave the road. On the day of road inauguration, the villagers celebrated the occasion.
5.氣爆接續清掃
In Banqiao, New Taipei City, an apartment building on Changjiang Road exploded earlier in the year due to a gas leak. The building is now getting repaired. However, as the junk in the building has not been removed, construction has been delayed. Government authorities and Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation contacted Tzu Chi, asking for help. Nearly 40 volunteers showed up to help with cleaning.
6.胡氏娥回診
In 2016, a Vietnamese patient suffered from elephantiasis. Fortunately, she traveled to Taiwan to undergo surgeries at the Hualien Tzu Chi Medical Center. With three plastic surgeries and her wearing of compression stockings, the patient is recovering well.
7.肝癌免疫放療
Liver cancer is the fourth most common form of cancer in Taiwan. In the past, it was only possible to treat with targeted drug. In recent years, the emergence of immunotherapy has led doctors to find that 60 percent of patients with tumors can be controlled and even reduced. If combined with radiation therapy, the effect is even better.
8.中醫看西瓜
In the hot summer, many people like to eat watermelon to cool off. For one 65-year-old dialysis patient in Taichung, eating too much watermelon was a burden on her body. She even experienced difficulty breathing. The doctors say that watermelon is very rich in nutrients and you should be mindful of how much you eat.
9.泰大學訪慈中
Thailand Silpakorn University teachers visited Tainan Tzu Chi senior high school to learn about Tzu Chi's humanistic culture education. Through Tzu Chi's tea ceremony and Jing Si Aphorisms, they've experienced a different kind of teaching method.
10. 馬泰領事參訪
With the coronation of the Thai king, the Thai Consulate-General in Penang, Malaysia, planned to hold a joint charity sale with several local charity groups in August. Tzu Chi is one of the invited groups. On this day, three officials from the Thai Consulate-General visited a Tzu Chi dialysis building in Penang to communicate with volunteers.
END:長寧關懷
In the aftermath of Sichuan earthquake, many affected residents have been sleeping on the ground or chairs. Tzu Chi volunteers have delivered their second batch of folding beds and blankets to two remote townships, so the affected residents can rest well. We will leave you with these images. Thank you for joining us. Goodbye.

Demolition of quake damaged buildings in Taiwan
(9 Feb 2018) Workers in Hualien on Friday started demolishing the Marshal Hotel, which was heavily damaged in an earthquake that shook the island's east coast on Tuesday, killing at least 10 people.
Taiwan's National Fire Agency said on Thursday also said that 272 others were injured and seven remained unaccounted for following the magnitude 6.4 quake.
The shifting of the buildings in worst-hit Hualien county was likely caused by soil liquefaction, when the ground loses its solidity under stress such as the shaking of an earthquake.

Governor General of Canada
The Governor General of Canada is the federal viceregal representative of the Canadian monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II. Because the person of the sovereign is shared equally both with the 15 other Commonwealth realms and the 10 provinces of Canada and resides predominantly in her oldest realm, the United Kingdom, she, on the advice of the Canadian prime minister, appoints the governor general to carry out most of her constitutional and ceremonial duties. The commission is for an unfixed period of time—known as serving at Her Majesty's pleasure—though five years is the normal convention. Beginning in 1959, it is also traditional to rotate between anglophone and francophone incumbents. Once in office, the governor general maintains direct contact with the Queen, wherever she may be at the time.
The office has its roots in the 16th and 17th century colonial governors of New France and British North America, and thus is the oldest continuous institution in Canada. The present incarnation of the position emerged with Canadian Confederation and the British North America Act in 1867, which defined the viceregal office as the Governor General acting by and with the Advice of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada. However, the post still ultimately represented the government of the United Kingdom until, after continually decreasing involvement by the British government and the passage in 1931 of the Statute of Westminster, the governor general became the direct, personal representative of the uniquely Canadian sovereign. During that process of gradual independence, the governor general took on an ever expanding role: in 1904, the Militia Act granted permission for the governor general to use the title of Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian militia, in the name of the sovereign and actual Commander-in-Chief, and in 1927 the first official international visit by a governor general was made. In 1947, King George VI issued letters patent allowing the viceroy to carry out almost all of the monarch's powers in his or her stead. By the Constitution Act, 1982, any constitutional amendment that affects the Crown, including the Office of the Governor General, requires the unanimous consent of each provincial legislature as well as the federal parliament.

20141006 MP Weston Congratulates Taiwan on its 103rd National Day
Mr. Speaker, Canadians and the people of Taiwan share many things in common, including democracy, freedom and the rule of law.
As head of the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, and on behalf of Canadians everywhere, I take great pleasure in wishing Taiwan a very prosperous and successful 103rd birthday on October 10.
There is a great personal friendship that has arisen between the peoples of Taiwan and Canada. I know this well, having lived in Taiwan for 10 years. Taiwan is where I met my wife Donna, and where our children spent three months in elementary school learning Mandarin, a language that I love.
I know all members will join me in welcoming Taiwan's new senior representatives of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada, representative Bruce Linghu in Ottawa and director-general William Heng-sheng Chuang in Vancouver.
I look forward to the resumption of the Terry Fox Run in Taiwan next month, thanks to the support of Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou and our parliamentary friendship group.
I wish happy birthday to Taiwan.
