Aleppo man babysits rescued cats in war-torn Syria

In war-torn Syria, a former electrician rescues the cats caught in the middle of the fighting and gives them a home, right where he lives.
STORY-LINE:
Mohammed Alaa Aljaleel is known as Aleppo's cat man.
An ambulance driver and former electrician from Aleppo, he dedicates his time to saving and sheltering cats in war-torn Syria.
I established the first cat shelter in Aleppo and in the whole of Syria in (the district of) Hanano. The number of cats in the shelter reached 170, recalls Aljaleel. In late 2016, the shelling intensified in the city of Aleppo, specifically in November and December 2016. The city was under heavy bombardment. I lost 80 cats due to chlorine gas and missile (attacks) that hit the shelter.
In 2016, fighting intensified between rebels and government forces. Aleppo was being heavily shelled with barrel bombs .
Syrian activits also reported that government warplanes dropped suspected chlorine bombs in the rebel-held part of the city , injuring dozens.
Aljaleel was forced to flee to the western countryside of Aleppo.
But he managed to re-establish his shelter with about a hundred new cats, I started to collect injured cats and established a veterinary clinic, he says.
Aljaleel also says he helped treat people and founded an orphanage thanks to donations he received from people for his cats.
The donations coming from my friends from all over the world, who strongly supported me, have allowed me to also help (human) orphans and people, it was a great job. Within a year or a year and a half, we were able to provide many services for people such as digging wells and helping people in need, he says.
His cat sanctuary, known as Ernesto Sanctuary, collects donations on Facebook and on its website as well.
Aljaleel works with Mohammed Youssef, a local veterinary doctor to save the cats. I work with Mr. Alaa in saving the animals from shelling and rescue them from under the rubble. We also save the cats that are hurt in traffic incidents or hurt themselves by falling from heights, explains Youssef, we have a free clinic here and we treat all kinds of animals. We take the animals to the clinic, treat them, and give them the medicines that are available. Also, vaccinating them with the necessary vaccinations if we have them.
Aljaleel says the shelter is his home.
His love for the small furry hunters, evident in the way that he plays with them, has been with him since his early childhood.
He maintains that, aside from children, cats are the biggest losers of the war because of their dependence on humans for food and shelter.
He is grateful to provide them with love and a home.

NWW World-News 11.02.2012 Bomb blast @ Aleppo Syria
The death toll from Friday morning's bomb blasts in Syria's largest city, Aleppo, has reached 28, with another 235 injured.
The attacks are the worst since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime 11 months ago.
Syrian state media said two cars laden with explosives targeted a branch of military intelligence and a security force base.
TV channels broadcast graphic images of the blast site. A Syrian TV reporter at the scene said both civilians and security officers were killed, and that the attack occurred near a park where children were playing.
The state channel blamed the attack on terrorist groups in the city, and called them an attempt to destabilize the country.
Meanwhile, initial reports following the attack say a spokesperson from the Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility for the attacks. Later statements from the opposition appear to contradict this, accusing Assad's regime of orchestrating the attacks to discredit the opposition and to side step anti-governmental protests that had been planned for Friday.
One of the injured described how it all happened.
In the morning we were at the barracks and were getting ready to leave when suddenly the explosion happened. When I regained consciousness I realized that I was injured and was in the hospital.
The commercial hub of Aleppo has remained relatively untouched by the 11-month uprisings against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but has seen increasing protests and violence in the last couple of weeks.
Imad Muhammad, general from military security believes that it is definitely a sign that they are confused and don't know what they are doing. So the crisis is at its last stage.
East Aleppo struggles to bury the dead
Rebel-held east Aleppo is struggling to deal with its dead. The cemeteries are full and bodies are being buried in public places like parks.
Syria's civil war: Road linking Aleppo to Turkey cut
Activists in Aleppo have confirmed that the only road linking the Syrian city to Turkey has been cut off by Kurdish fighters.
Heavy fighting is being reported near the Castilo Road between Syrian opposition groups and Kurdish forces.
And a Syrian rights group is warning that Aleppo could be facing a devastating siege.

WHO: Urgent medical shipments to Aleppo, Syria

During the last two weeks WHO has sent urgent medical shipments to Aleppo, Syria to respond to the increasing health needs.
The shipments provide more than 300,000 treatments to conduct surgery on injured people. They also contain medicines for patients with chronic diseases who have not received treatment in the besieged areas since July.

The centuries-old al-Saqatiyah Market has reopened in Aleppo on Thursday after it was restored to its former glory.
Aleppo locals and representatives of the Aga Khan foundation who partially funded the venture attended the official opening of the market.
The market or Souq, is part of the ancient Bazaar in the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO world heritage site which was damaged during the eight-year Syrian conflict. Many of the old markets are still in ruins.
The venture was partially funded by the Aga Khan foundation at a cost of $400,000 (€357,168) and took eight months.

Syria from Space: Aleppo in darkness and light - BBC News
Six years of war in Syria have had a devastating effect on millions of its people. One of the most catastrophic impacts has been on the country’s electricity network. Images from Nasa, obtained by BBC Arabic, show clearly how the lights have gone out during the course of the conflict, leaving people to survive with little to no power. Each timelapse frame shows an average of the light emitted at night every month from 2012, one year after the war began. They show that the areas where Syrians can turn lights on at night, power their daily lives and get access to life-saving medical equipment, have shrunk dramatically.

Aleppo onslaught: Rebels lose control of key areas
Syrian government forces have seized five more areas from rebels in eastern Aleppo, including the key Al-Shar neighbourhood.
President Bashar al-Assad's troops have now taken more than two thirds of rebel territory in the besieged city in their latest offensive.

Syria: Park in Deir ez-Zor neighbourhood converted into cemetery
A park in the Jura neighbourhood of Deir ez-Zor has been converted into a local cemetery as the central cemetery area is under control of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL), in footage captured Friday.
One local resident described how IS had banned citizens from burying the dead in the main cemetery area in Deir ez-Zor. He went on to say mortars had been falling like rain on the city which had caused many deaths.
