Gengenbach is an historic town delightfully set in the Kinzigtal of the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) and boasting romantic half timbered houses in narrow streets in the style of the Romantic Road (Romantischestrasse).
The city is an important link in the Baden-Württemberg German Wine Route (Weinstrasse). Gengenbach has been referred to as a “pearl among the Black Forest towns”.
The town hall in Gengenbach has been a magical attraction during the Advent season for many years: with its 24 windows, it becomes the world's largest Advent calendar house.

For the first time our European trip takes us into Germany. We visit the world's largest advent calendar, which is their town hall decorated for the Christmas season.
Sorry for taking so long to get these posted. It might not be advent season right now, but I think it is still fun to watch.

GENGENBACH MEINES HERZENS - Original Music by Juan Carlos Garcia
GENGENBACH MEINES HERZENS (Gengenbach from my Heart) is a musical piece made by the Canarian composer Juan Carlos Garcia and dedicated to the city of Gengenbach in the Black Forest of Germany, one of the most beautiful villages in Europe. The author was inspired by a trip he made in August of 2017 where he was deeply impressed by the beauty and magic of the site, which also inspired Walt Disney to set his classic film Pinocchio (1940). The piece in question has been donated to the City Council, which has the Guinness World Record for being the largest Advent Calendar in the world.

A little bit of background and history of Carnival:
ROSENMONTAG:
The Karneval season begins at 11 minutes past the eleventh hour on the 11th of November and the street carnival starts on the Thursday before Rosenmontag, which is known as Weiberfastnacht (women's carnival, Fat Thursday). Karneval is prevalent in Roman Catholic areas and is a continuation of the old Roman traditions of slaves and servants being master for a day. Karneval derives from the Latin carnem levare (taking leave of meat) marking the beginning of Lent.
Carnival is not a national holiday in Germany, but schools are closed on Rosenmontag and the following Tuesday in the strongholds and many other areas. Many schools as well as companies tend to give teachers, pupils and employees the Thursday before Rosenmontag off as well and have celebrations in school or in the working place on Weiberfastnacht.
Celebrations usually include dressing up in fancy costumes, dancing, parades, heavy drinking and general public displays with floats.Usually sweets (Kamelle) are thrown into the crowds lining the streets among cries of Helau or Alaaf, whereby the cry Kölle Alaaf is only applied in the Cologne area. Sweets and tulips are thrown into the crowd.
WEIBERFASTNACHT:
There are hardly any parades, but people wear costumes and celebrate in pubs and in the streets. Beueler Weiberfastnacht (women's carnival in Beuel) is traditionally celebrated In the Bonn district of Beuel. The tradition is said to have started here in 1824, when local women first formed their own carnival committee. The symbolic storming of the Beuel town hall is broadcast live on TV. In many towns across the state of North Rhine Westphalia, a ritual takeover of the town halls by local women has become tradition. Among other established customs, on that day women cut off the ties of men, which are seen as a symbol of men's status. The men wear the stumps of their ties and get a Bützchen (little kiss) as compensation.

Ulm is a city in the federal German state of Baden-Württemberg, situated on the River Danube. Ulm, founded in medieval times around 850, is rich in history and traditions as a former Free Imperial City. Today, it is an economic centre due to its varied industries, and it is the seat of the University of Ulm. Internationally, Ulm is primarily known for having the church with the tallest steeple in the world. In the center is the huge, Gothic Ulm Minster, a centuries-old church. Its steeple has views of the city and, in clear weather, the Alps. The Town Hall has an early-Renaissance facade, murals and a 16th-century astronomical clock. Half-timbered houses line the narrow alleys of the Fischerviertel, an area close to the River Danube. It is also known as the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
Most of the city was rebuilt in the plain and simple style of the 1950s and 1960s, but some of the historic landmark buildings have been restored. Due to its almost complete destruction in 1944, the Hirschstraße part of the city primarily consists of modern architecture. Ulm experienced substantial growth in the decades following World War II, with the establishment of large new housing projects and new industrial zones. In 1967, Ulm University was founded, which proved to be of great importance for the development of the city. Particularly since the 1980s, the transition from classical industry towards the high-tech sector has accelerated, with, for example, the establishment of research centres of companies like Daimler, Siemens and Nokia and a number of small applied research institutes near the university campus. The city today is still growing, forming a twin city of 170,000 inhabitants together with its neighbouring Bavarian city of Neu-Ulm, and seems to benefit from its central position between the cities of Stuttgart and Munich and thus between the cultural and economic hubs of southern Germany.

The Bruchsal Castle in Baden-Württemberg town of Bruchsal was the residence of the Prince Bishops of Speyer (as a substitute for the Nine Years' War destroyed episcopal palace ).
The Bruchsal castle in baroque style was from 1720 at the request of the Prince Bishop Damian Hugo Philipp von Schönborn from Lossburger sandstone built. It is in essence a three-winged structure which on plans of kurmainzischen Senior Construction Director Maximilian von Welsch back. After several changes to the plan the central staircase was Balthasar Neumann built, who took over the construction management since 1731st It is generally regarded as one of the most successful solutions of a baroque staircase system. In the heart of the Corps de Logis, his brilliant design provides for a two-storey staircase, covered by the domed hall, leading to the two locks of the castle. The Fürstenaal is the Festaal to the city. The marble or emperor's hall is towards the garden. The marble hall belongs to the architectural and programmatic center of the spiritual residence.
In addition to Neumann the Lombard painter took Giovanni Francesco Marchini on its activities in the castle. From 1731 to 1736, he paints the frescoes of the Intrada, the gloomy grotto and the dining room. The façade painting of the Corps de Logis and the Orangeriebauts also come from the hand of Marchinis. The apparent architecture of painted wall projections is of outstanding perfection.
The interior in the style of Rococo was mainly under Hugo Damian successor Franz Christoph von Hutten to Stolzenberg made. The frescoes depict in the language of mythology impressive past , present and future of the Principality of Speyer. The stucco was only in 1755 by Johann Michael Feuchtmayer , frescoes by Johannes Zick completed.

Germany has been center stage through much of world history. Today, travelers head to the fascinating city of Berlin to get a firsthand look at remnants of 20th century events, such as World War II and the Cold War.
But even though the capital is the most popular tourist destination in the country, each of Germany's 16 states boast innumerable attractions: opulent palaces, rich forests, soaring mountains and picturesque villages.
Every corner of Germany has something to offer. The southern region of Bavaria is marked by lush emerald-green terrain and castles that seem as though they were plucked from the pages of a child's fairytale book. The north is home to glittering seaside cities, such as Bremen and Hamburg. 1. In this picture you see, Monschau Altstadt. There are rows of timber houses which are about 300 years old. There are elegant restaurants and charming boutiques which give the historic center of this western resort town.
2. Now in this picture you see Potsdam's Grotto Hall. The Prussian palaces of Sanssouci are the main attraction of Potsdam. A few years ago, the Grotto Hall of the New Palace made its big debut, offering guests an exquisite salon with marbled walls that feature intricate mosaics made of glistening bits of seashell and stone.
3. Lichtenstein Castle: Huddled in the Swabian Jura mountain range, this impressive structure sits on a steep escarpment that, depending on the season, is verdant green or bright yellow.
4. Wiblingen Abbey Library: With its elaborate ceiling paintings by Franz Martin Kühn and intricate gold-trimmed pillars, the Rococo style library at Wiblingen Abbey is considered one of the most beautiful book rooms in the world. The monastery's church area also houses celestial frescoes and a striking altar.
5. Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe: In 2013, UNESCO designated this hillside landscape park in Kassel a World Heritage site. It features a 350-meter-long Grand Cascade that flows down to the Neoclassical Wilhelmshöhe structure and a towering copper statue of the Greek god Hercules.
6. Blautopf: One of Germany's most colorful treasures is the Blautopf, a jewel-toned spring in the city of Blaubeuren that feeds into the Blau River. The bright blue pool is about 21 meters deep, and surrounding sites -- such as the Benedictine Blaubeuren Abbey -- make the view even more impressive.
7. Peacock Island: Pfaueninsel -- or Peacock Island -- is an island in Berlin's River Havel. In addition to a tiny, storybook castle that sits on the edge of the island, the area is known for a flock of peacocks that strut amongst the leafy brambles and wooded areas.
8. Altensteig: While the natural beauty of the Black Forest is a draw for many travelers, this small, picture-perfect village is also a must-see for anyone stopping near Baden-Württemberg. The medieval architecture and timber houses feel like entering a time portal into the Middle Ages.
9. Sylt: The island of Sylt in the North Sea is full of natural treasures, including a geological marvel known as the Morsum Kliff. The rock formation rises about 20 meters into the sky and is marked by a palette of colors -- the result of a mix of black mica clay, red sandstone and white sand.

On Wednesday, September 7, 2011, we traveled from Amsterdam to Rhineland, Germany. We visited the city of Cologne and saw the awesome twin-spired gothic cathedral. In the afternoon, we took a cruise past castle-crested cliffs, terraced vineyards and small towns. That night we stayed at the Renaissance Karlsrueh Mendelssohn Platz in the town Karlsrueh, Germany.
