Reminiscences of My Childhood and Youth, by Georg Brandes (1906)
Georg Brandes was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1842 and attended college at the University of Copenhagen from 1859-1864. His teachers were Hans Brochner and Rasmus Nielsen, both of whom had known Soren Kierkegaard. Brandes was influenced by Baruch Spinoza, Friedrich Hegel, Johan Ludvig Heiberg, and Friedrich Nietzsche. He wrote many biographies including one on Kierkegaard and one on Nietzsche. The book questions whether sin is real or the law is real. What is ideal?
Brandes published Brochner's Recollections of Soren Kierkegaard. Thomas Henry Croxall, published parts of Brochner's book in Glimpses and Impressions of Kierkegaard 1959.

Georg Brandes: Men of the Modern Awakening
Georg Brandes was a literary critic. He didn't write his own books but rather wrote critical assessments about books written by other authors or about their lives. He was born in 1842 in Copenhagen, Denmark and died there after living in France and Germany for some time in 1927. He gave lectures from 1871-1881 in Copenhagen and then wrote Main Currents in the Literature of the Nineteenth Century from his lecture notes.
Georg Brandes: The Historical Movement in Modern Literature (1896)
This reading is taken from The Library of the World's Best Literature, Vol 5, edited by Charles Dudley Warner (1896). It's a translation of Georg Brandes work, From the Introduction to 'Main Currents in the Literature of the Nineteenth Century'.
Georg Brandes was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1842 and died there in 1927. He wrote a six volume literary criticism of such writers as Chateaubriand, Rousseau and Goethe. The work is a good read and it's available for free.
He was writing in 1870 about the Revolutions of 1830 and 1848, which were both due to The French Revolution 1789-1815.

NY SAMTIDSBEVIDSTHED I DANSK LITTERATUR
Det er helt i Georgs Brandes ånd, når dansk litteratur igen kravler ud af elfenbenstårnet og har meninger om litteratur samfund, og ikke mindst får læserne til at diskutere og tage stilling. Ikke bare til de æstetiske kvaliteter af et givent værk, men også til bogens udsagn, og hvad det fortæller os om vor egen tid. Som Georg Brandes skrev, lever litteraturen af at sætte problemer til debat.
Kaspar Colling Nielsen har med Den danske borgerkrig 2018-24, 2013, fået læserne op af stolene, og Olga Ravn sætter med Celestine, 2015 sig selv på spil. Olga Ravn ser en generation af forfattere, der føler et etisk ansvar og dermed også udviser en politisk bevidsthed, der længe har været tabu i dansk litteratur. Kaspar Colling Nielsen og Olga Ravn tager debatten i Georg Brandes Selskabet d. 5. november kl. 16.30 i Politikens foredragssal.

Harald Slott-Møller (Copenhagen, 17 August 1864 - 20 October 1937) was a Danish painter and ceramist. Together with his wife, the painter Agnes Slott-Møller, he was a founding member of Den Frie Udstilling (The Free Exhibition).
Born in Copenhagen, Slott-Møller was the son of merchant Carl Emil Møller and Anna Maria née Møller. After completing the preparatory course at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1883), he painted for three years under Peder Severin Krøyer.
Slott-Møller first exhibited in 1886 at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition and attracted attention in 1888 with his large lively work Fattigfolk i Fattiglægens Venteværelse (Poor People in the Poor Doctor's Waiting Room) (9:32). He exhibited at Kunsthal Charlottenborg and Den Frie Udstilling with individual portraits, such as that of Georg Brandes (Georg Brandes at the University in Copenhagen), 1889 and landscapes, which often featured a prominent spot.
A change in style occurred in the early 1890s as can be seen in his portrait of the sculptor Anne Marie Brodersen, in which her fair hair is covered with gold, as are the cornfields in one of his landscapes. Then followed a series of painting which ensured him a place as one of the principal participants in 1890 painting: Tre kvinder (Three Women), Foraaret (Spring), and his strikingly symbolic work Primavera (1901) (00:05).
Slott-Møller is remembered for his portraits of well-known figures from Southern Jutland and South Schleswig, members of the Graenseforeningen for en aben danskhed often characterized with customized backgrounds such as a landscape or appropriate buildings.
He also worked at the faience factory Aluminia 1902-1906 designing a number of notable items together with Christian Joachim. As a result, Slott-Møller gained wide recognition as one of the leading craftsmen of the turn of the century. Although he continued to paint, opinions about his work became ever less supportive, partly on artistic grounds but also as a result of his attitude towards the public.
As early as 1896 Richard Muther wrote:
. . . Harald Slott-Møller is a man of eminent talent as a colourist, and his pictures The Doctor's Waiting-Room and the Portrait of my wife, early assured him a place amongst promising artists of the younger generation. Later he turned to decorative painting, though without achieving in it anything so deservedly successful as the two works which have been named.
In 1919, he became a Knight of the Dannebrog. He was a founding member of Den Frie Udstilling (The Free Exhibition). He is buried at Holmens Cemetery.
Slott-Møller is portrayed in a double portrait: Ude eller Kammerater (Out or Comrades, 1886) in which he and his wife have painted each other. Another self-portrait based on a study drawing was Trækfuglene (Migratory Birds, 1909). There is also a self-portrait in Florence's Uffizi Gallery (1924).

Dragon Fountain, Copenhagen - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Dragon Fountain is a fountain located in the City Hall Square in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was designed by Joakim Skovgaard in collaboration with Thorvald Bindesbøll.
The fountain stands just under 7 metres tall and the basin has a diameter of 3.1 metres. The central motif of the fountain is a bull fighting a dragon. On the edge of the basin sit three water-spraying dragons. Other decorations on the basin are inspired by Ancient Greek ornamentation.
The design was originally created as an entry in the competition for a new monument on Amagertorv. Skovgaard conceived the original idea and made the first model in 1889. It was then modified by Bindesbøll before Skovgaard created the final drawings. The competition was not won by Skovgaard and Bindesbøll but by Edvard Petersen and Vilhelm Bissen with their Stork Fountain.
In connection with the Town Hall Exhibition in 1901, which was dedicated to Danish art from before 1890, it was decided to realize Skovgaard's and Bindesbøll's old design on the City Hall Square. The project was also supported by Forenignen til Hovedstadens Forskønnelse and the Eibeschütz Grant as well as a few other foundations. The site on the City Hall Square had originally been intended for the Gefion Fountain but this monument was instead moved to Nordre Toldbod.
The Dragon Fountain's first part, without the central animal group, was inaugurated in 1904. It was vigorously criticized by the press and became colloquially known as The spittoon among the residents of Copenhagen.

Peder Severin Krøyer (1851-1909), professionally known as P. S. Krøyer, was a Danish painter.
Krøyer was born in Stavanger, Norway, on 23 July 1851 to Ellen Cecilie Gjesdal. He was raised by Gjesdal's sister, Bertha Cecilie (born 1817) and brother-in-law, the Danish zoologist Henrik Nikolai Krøyer, after his mother was judged unfit to care for him. Krøyer moved to Copenhagen to live with his foster parents soon afterward. Having begun his art education at the age of nine under private tutelage, he was enrolled in Copenhagen's Technical Institute the following year.
In 1870 at the age of 19 Krøyer completed his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi), where he had studied with Frederik Vermehren. In 1873 he was awarded the gold medal, as well as a scholarship.
His official debut as a painter was in 1871 at Charlottenborg with a portrait of a friend, the painter Frans Schwartz. He exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg throughout his life.
In 1874 Heinrich Hirschsprung bought his first painting from Krøyer, establishing a long-standing patronage. Hirschsprung's collection of art forms the basis of the Hirschsprung Museum in Copenhagen.
Travels
Between 1877 and 1881, Krøyer travelled extensively in Europe, meeting artists, studying art, and developing his skills and outlook. He stayed in Paris and studied under Léon Bonnat, and undoubtedly came under the influence of contemporary impressionists – Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Édouard Manet.
He continued to travel throughout his life, constantly drawing inspiration from foreign artists and cultures. Hirschsprung provided financial support during the early travels, and Krøyer continued exhibiting in Denmark throughout this period.
In 1882 he returned to Denmark. He spent June–October at Skagen, then a remote fishing village on the northern tip of Denmark, painting themes from local life, as well as depictions of the artistic community there. He would continue to be associated with the developing art and literary scene at Skagen. Other artists at Skagen included writers Holger Drachmann, Georg Brandes and Henrik Pontoppidan, and artists Michael Ancher and Anna Ancher.
Krøyer divided his time between rented houses in Skagen during the summer, a winter apartment in Copenhagen where he worked on his large commissioned portraits, and travel outside of the country.
On a trip to Paris in 1888 he ran into Marie Martha Mathilde Triepcke, whom he had known in Copenhagen. They fell in love and, after a whirlwind romance, married on 23 July 1889 at her parents' home in Germany. Marie Krøyer, who was also a painter, became associated with the Skagen community, and after their marriage was often featured in Krøyer's paintings. The couple had one child, a daughter named Vibeke, born in January 1895. They were divorced in 1905 following a prolonged separation.
Krøyer's eyesight failed him gradually over the last ten years of his life until he was totally blind. Ever the optimist, he painted almost to the end, in spite of health obstacles. In fact, he painted some of his last masterpieces while half-blind, joking that the eyesight in his one working eye had become better with the loss of the other eye.
Krøyer died in 1909 in Skagen at 58 years of age after years of declining health. He had also been in and out of hospitals, suffering from bouts of mental illness.
Krøyer's best known and best-loved work is entitled Summer Evening on Skagen's Southern Beach with Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer (Sommeraften ved Skagen Sønderstrand med Anna Ancher og Marie Krøyer), 1893. He painted many beach scenes featuring both recreation life on the beach (bathers, strollers), and local fishermen.
Another well-loved work is Midsummer Eve Bonfire on Skagen Beach (Sankthansbål på Skagen strand), 1906. This large-scale work features a great crowd of the artistic and influential Skagen community gathered around a large bonfire on the beach on Saint John's Eve (Midsummer Eve).
Both of these works are in the permanent collection of the Skagens Museum which is dedicated to that community of artists, including those who gathered around Krøyer, a great organizer and bon vivant.

Frygt og bæven: Religion og fortællekunst i Thomas Manns Josef og hans brødre.
I romanen Josef og hans brødre, som mere og mere betragtes som Thomas Manns egentlige hovedværk, genfortælles den bibelske Josef-historie med udgangspunkt i stamfædrene Abraham, Isak og Jakob og med inddragelse af både jødiske, kristne og muslimske traditioner såvel som moderne psykologi og religionshistorie. En central rolle spiller her Abrahams opdagelse af Gud, som vil være forelæsningens tema. Herudfra diskuteres forholdet mellem antropologi og teologi og mellem religion og humanisme.
Heinrich Detering, f. 1959, er en af Tysklands førende litteraturforskere, hvis kundskab strækker sig (mindst) fra H. C. Andersen til Bob Dylan – han har skrevet om dem begge, senest en stor bog om Dylan. Hans sprogkundskaber foruden hovedsprogene også dansk. Thomas Manns værk er blandt hans centrale emner, og han er medudgiver af den store kritiske Thomas Mann-udgave.
Heinrich Detering er professor ved universitetet i Göttingen og tillige gæsteprofessor i flere lande. Han har modtaget adskillige æresbevisninger, deriblandt i 2009 de tyske forskningsråds Leibniz-pris på 2 mio. euro. Han er præsident for Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung og i øvrigt selv også lyriker.
