Lichtenberg und die Elektrizität -- Physik in der Epoche der Romantik

Vortrag im Rahmen der öffentlichen Vorlesungsreihe Geschichte der Physik - Revolutionen grosser Denker am 10.7.2012 an der Universität Göttingen.

Abstract:
Im zweiten Drittel des 18. Jahrhunderts wandelte sich der Bereich der Naturforschung von einer primär deskriptiven Naturgeschichte zu einer stärker analytisch ausgerichteten Naturwissenschaft. Dieser Umschwung war jedoch nicht umfassend. Die Naturgeschichte und die Naturphilosophie wurde nicht nur weiter fortgeschrieben, sie hatte erst nach 1800 ihre eigentliche Konjunktur. Ihre Zielstellung war eine Systematisierung der Naturphänomene. In der in einer Vielfalt der Phänomene erstickenden Naturforschung gewann diese Art der Systematisierung auch im Kontext der physikalischen Forschung um 1800 an Bedeutung. In dieser Tradition war vor allem die Erforschung der nicht sichtbaren Elektrizität von besonderem Interesse. Zur Untersuchung der elektrischen und galvanischen Phänomene waren jedoch umfangreiche Experimentalanordnungen mit verschiedenen Instrumenten und Apparaturen notwendig, um die Phänomene überhaupt erst erfahrbar zu machen.
Im deutschen Sprachraum war zu dieser Zeit Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742--1799) einer der bedeutendsten und elaboriertesten Forscher auf dem Gebiet der Elektrizitätslehre. Der Vortrag erläutert das Wirken von Lichtenberg auf diesem Gebiet und stellt dar, inwieweit in diesem Zusammenhang von dem Zeitalter einer romantischen Physik gesprochen werden kann.

Studium der Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften, Technik und Medizin und Philosophie an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. 2005 Promotion zum Dr. rer. nat. mit einer Arbeit zu „Experimentalprogramme der frühen Naturwissenschaften. Johann Wilhelm Ritter (1776--1810) und Joseph Weber (1753--1831). Von 1998 bis 2009 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Sonderforschungsbereich 482 „Ereignis Weimar-Jena. Kultur um 1800 im Teilprojekt E2 „Empirie versus Spekulation? Begriffene und erfahrene Natur an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.
Vom 1.12.2009 bis 30.09.2010 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (mit Lehrauftrag) am Institut für Geschichte der Medizin, Naturwissenschaft und Technik „Ernst-Haeckel-Haus der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.
Seit 01.10.2010 Koordinator des Projektes „Johann Friedrich Blumenbach -- online der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen.
