How To Find Parking for a Tiny House? - 5 Useful Tips!
In this video we share 5 tips and ideas on how to find parking for a tiny house.
Tiny houses are illegal in many places, sometimes because they don't meet the minimum square footage requirement in the by-law, city planning or zoning regulations. Other times they're not permitted because they're on wheels, or if they're not hooked up to a septic tank, or if the property doesn't have a well. It's a good idea to find out what the rules are in your area before you buy a piece of land to park your tiny house on.
Some RV parks and campgrounds allow tiny houses to park there and the advantage of staying in a place like this is that you might have water, sewer and power hookups. Maybe even WiFi!
There are many communities, suburbs, eco-villages, towns, and cities who are re-zoning to allow tiny houses in certain areas. A website called Tiny House Community has a great list of places to check out:
Parking a tiny house in someone else's backyard might be possible in one of these legal re-zoned areas, but it might also be legal if your area has a caregiver, accessory dwelling unit, or recreational vehicle allowance (and if your tiny house fits within their specific criteria).
If tiny houses aren't legal in your area, we'd suggest doing some research to see if there are other people in your community who are also looking for places to park a tiny house. You may have to be the pioneers in your area to get the ball rolling.
Talking to the people in your community, in your municipal office, and your neighbours is a great place to start. You never know who might be open and willing to help!

Walbran Park Trail from King George Terrace Victoria BC
Today we walked 2km in Oak Bay checking out some local parks we had not visited in five-years. Anderson Hill Park, Walbran Park, Gonzales Park and Ross Bay Cemetery (RBC).
It was cold and sunny today so was most pleasant for some of the hill-climbs we encountered; especially, the Walbran Park trail up from King George Terrace at Sunny Lane to Denison road atop the hill. We put together a 90-second video for your viewing enjoyment.
We forgot -- in the intervening five years -- Denison Road leads not only to Gonzales Park but carries on (to the left) to Walbran Park and the top of the trail leading down to King George Terrace.

Habitat 67 stacks 354 prefabs that get urban/suburban balance
Habitat 67 was a 1960s experiment in dense, downtown housing that tried to combine the best of urban and suburban living. Architect Moshe Safdie wanted to integrate the qualities of a suburban home- the access to nature and views- into a high-rise. Built for the 1967 World's Fair, Habitat 67 was also a prototype of an affordable 3D modular building system that he hoped would “reinvent the apartment building”.
Like the Japanese Metabolism movement (see Nagakin capsule tower: Habitat 67 is an interconnected web of prefabricated cells stacked so the emergent whole feels less coldly geometric and more organic.
“Habitat 67 comprises 354 identical, prefabricated concrete forms arranged in various combinations, reaching up to 12 stories in height. Together these units create 146 residences of varying sizes and configurations, each formed from one to eight linked concrete units. The complex originally contained 158 apartments, but several apartments have since been joined to create larger units, reducing the total number. Each unit is connected to at least one private terrace, which can range from approximately 20 to 90 square metres (225 to 1,000 sq ft) in size.” - Wikipedia
Originally, Safdie had aimed to create an affordable prefab system, but given the experimental nature of the project, costs reached approximately C$140,000 per unit (pricey for the 1960s). Today, the apartment owners all own shares in the building. Long-time resident George Boynton helped instigate changing the status of the complex from government-owned apartment building to a private Limited Partnership Complex. He gave us a tour of the 10-story building and a walk-through of Mosha Safdie’s newly-renovated apartment.

Strange Sounds in Terrace, BC Canada August 29th 2013 7:30am (Vid#1)
This is NOT a fake or hoax. What I recorded is what we woke up to that morning. We still have no confirmed proven source, yet. I have the original files on my camcorder still which could be examined for authenticity. (Please excuse any dead links below. Not sure why but YT has hacked and slashed them so they no longer work. I am busy with kids and work but will attempt to get them back up and going here soon. In the mean time just look up my FB profile as most are posted there and open to the public for viewing facebook.com/kimberly.wookey)
This is the second time I personally have heard these sounds here in Terrace BC Canada. First time was June 19th 2013 at approx 9-9:30am but it was not quite as intense. On the morning of August 29th 2013 at approx. 7:30am I was awoken by these sounds. I shot out of bed realizing it was the same sounds I had heard before and I ran looking for a camera to try to capture them with. Came out into the livingroom to find my 7-year-old son awake and scared wondering what was going on. He's the one I am whispering to in the first video. He had said the noises woke him up as well and shook his window. I managed to record 3 clips showing almost 5 minutes of these strange sounds. After it was over and I sat down at the computer to upload the video. Checking my Facebook I noticed a lot of locals had heard the same sounds again but this time it was far more widespread. I have no idea what these sounds are but it is pretty strange and I am glad that I was able to catch them this time and share what I heard. This video was taken on my HD Samsung SC-HMX20C Video Camera. **Update** The sounds were heard again on Sept 8th at 6:30am so far we have confirmed reports of it being heard from town to the lake, 25km away.
Here are the links to the other 2 videos I recorded the morning of August 29th at approx 7:30 a.m. in Terrace BC Canada.
Original post made on Facebook minutes after the video was taken can be found here: facebook.com/photo.php?v=10153206359905331
Proof these sounds were heard on June 19th by local residents. This is a post that was made on my FB Moms group.
Reply from Caterpillar about this sound being made by a grader.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I am a 35yr old working mother of 4 wonderful children ages 19, 13, 9, and 8. I work in a longterm care home. I have been living in Terrace for 13yrs and in the house that the Strange Sounds video was shot at for 8 years. I personally do not believe this has any religious connection (I am a Secular Humanist) nor do I believe it is aliens, graders, trains, construction, etc. I do believe it could be a geophysical phenomenon.

Building Amazing Homes & Mobile Spaces Using Shipping Containers!
In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired!
Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. ( showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you.
Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers.
Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once.
Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once.
They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal.
While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look.
They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside.
Let us know what you think of shipping containers as alternative building blocks in the comments!

Video Transcript:
Hi everyone! Shawn Brown here with the West Haven Group, and today I am going to show you around my gorgeous new Kits townhouse listing at 1975 Stephens Street.
This 1,700 sqft entertain’s dream was completely renovated and re-designed 2 years ago. The living space comprises one entire floor and is perfect for entertaining, or just enjoying the feeling of space on a day-to-day basis. The open design allows natural light into the space from three exposures, which is lovely.
The large kitchen features a complete Bosch appliance package, custom cabinetry, huge island, and built-in office space. The dining area can seat up to ten guests comfortably, and one focal point of this re-design is this sleek two-sided gas fireplace.
The master suite is the entire top floor: huge bedroom with ample storage, stunning master bedroom with gorgeous free-standing bathtub, separate shower, double vanity, and windows looking onto the private rooftop deck.
Downstairs is the guest or teenager’s quarters: spacious guest bedroom and adjoining full bathroom. The unique feature on the ground floor is this customized double car garage - rare for townhouses or even most half duplexes and houses! - fit with $20,000 in various upgrades.
This stunning property is located in the coveted ‘North of 4th’ pocket of Kits, which is the area between 4th Avenue and the water. Demand to live and buy in this neighbourhood is high, yet the supply is always limited, creating a very robust micro-market.
The name Kitsilano comes from Squamish Chief August Jack Khatsahlano. For thousands of years, three indigenous peoples moved throughout this territory, hunting and gathering. Fast forward to now, and of course things are very different. Hunting consists of a short drive to Whole Foods. Gathering consists of strolling the boutiques along 4th.
4th avenue is home to great shopping of some the city’s best restaurants. There are too many to name here, but this area is a foodie’s version of heaven.
Thank you for joining me in Kits, on location. Send me a message should you have any questions about anything real estate. Have a great day!
