George Stephenson's Birthplace......
This small stone cottage, built around 1750, has earned a place in history by being the birthplace of railway pioneer George Stephenson. Stephenson was born here in 1781, and went on to make his name at nearby Wylam colliery. The cottage was once home to four pitmen's families, and the room in which Stephenson was born, and in which the whole family lived can be seen today, furnished in period style..
The cottage is now in the care of the National Trust.

Robert And George Stephenson At Dial Cottage - Britain's Secret Homes
The father and son engineers at Dial Cottage.
Tyne Valley DMU ride 1963 via North Wylam- line closed 1968
Starting from Haltwhistle we enjoy front seat views from a (first generation) Diesel Multiple Unit train along the Tyne Valley, through Hexham, from where we run non-stop to Newcastle.
Some of the route approaching Newcastle was that of the Wylam Waggonway of 1748, along which coal was hauled by horses. George Stephenson, “the father of railways” was born in a cottage beside the Waggonway. In the care of the National Trust, it can be visited.
Haltwhistle to Alston, and return, also in 1963, can be seen at youtube.com/watch?v=avrtu_uhstU.
Puffin Billy.
Puffin Billy.
Puffing Billy was one of the three similar engines built by William Hedley, the resident engineer at Wylam Colliery, to replace the horses used as motive power on the tramway. In 1813 Hedley built for Blackett's colliery business on the Wylam Colliery line the prototypes, Puffing Billy and Wylam Dilly. They were both rebuilt in 1815 with ten wheels, but were returned to their original condition in 1830 when the railway was relaid with stronger rails.

Carlisle-Newcastle Tyne Valley Railway 25/04/2018|Trains at Haltwhistle, Wylam, Newcastle & Carlisle
Here we see the Northern services which ran on Sunday 25/04/2018 along the Carlisle-Newcastle Line, known as the Tyne Valley Railway.
This is a line I'd wanted to do for a while now mainly because of the interesting signal boxes, the ones at Haltwhistle and Wylam were the main ones I wanted to see.
I caught the first service of the day from Carlisle to Haltwhistle where I had roughly an hour to look around before catching the second service from Carlisle as far as Wylam where I waited for what is one of Britain's longest trains with top and tailing Freightliner class 66s (66595+66953). I then walked to George Stephenson's Birthplace along the old Wylam Waggonway/Scotswood, Newburn and Wylam Railway (featured briefly at roughly the eighth minute). I then caught the third service out of Carlise to complete my journey to Newcastle. We arrived 22 minutes late due to a failed engine on unit 156451.
Services featured:
2N02,
2N01,
2N04,
2N05,
667R (Wamphray G.F. to Tyne S.S (STP)),
2N06,
2N09,
2N19 (seen terminated at Carlisle platform 5),
Hope you enjoy, I highly recommend this line.
