1950s STORY OF THE U.S. MAIL USPS PROMOTIONAL FILM LETTER SORTING & DELIVERY 64334
This 1950s color film is an educational public service announcement by the U.S. Postal Service. The film was produced by Lewis & Martin Films Inc. The focus of this film is to educate viewers on postal automation technology. The film begins with a vintage post office seal, followed by Arthur Summerfield, the Postmaster General from 1953-1961 under President Eisenhower, who speaks briefly about the mail service (0:42-1:30). Mail is dropped in and picked up from different mailboxes, including in a dual Local and Out of Town mailbox (1:31-1:58). Workers sort mail and boxes (1:59-2:17). New home construction is briefly showcased, including model homes (2:18-2:38). An aerial view shows a large factory and work trucks (2:39-2:54). Vintage illustrations show the U.S. map, as well as an overstuffed post office bursting at the seams and sending mail flying (2:55-3:30). A woman walks into a vintage “Victorian elegant” post office lobby (4:02-4:17). Men push carts and toss packages in a postal processing facility, letters are sorted into city boxes by hand, and packages from a mountain of boxes are tossed into hampers (4:18-5:00). The Transorma Letter Sorting Machine, the first implementation of a semiautomatic mail sorter, is operated by five clerks. Mail is shown being sorted by hand for contrast (5:01-5:43). An automated conveyor belt system is demonstrated, moving mail to different area (5:45-6:38). Boxes are moved down a conveyor belt where a keyboard operator punches in the address area for automatic sorting (6:39-7:14). A postman walks his route and delivers mail. 1950s post office trucks drop off packages (7:15-8:13). A carrier uses an experimental, three-wheeled post office truck (8:14-8:30). A postman pushes a postal cart down the sidewalk, delivering mail (8:31-8:40). The first version of a modern post office layout is shown, including the 24x7 lobby (8:41-9:13). Innovations such as early automated stamp machine, the post office lockbox, and the presence of ballpoint pens are briefly showcased (9:14-9:35). A woman prepares business mail and bundles mail with pressure-sensitive tape, dropping them into a triple-section mailbox (9:36-10:54). An experimental automatic culling machine, an automatic canceling machine, an electronic scanner that reads typed and printed addresses, and a code control machine are demonstrated. Researchers experiment with different mail automation ideas (10:55-13:10). Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield speaks to the camera to conclude the film (13:11-14:33).

About the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival:
Nationwide, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities use the creative arts as one form of rehabilitative treatment to help Veterans recover from and cope with physical and emotional disabilities. Across the country each year, Veterans treated at VA facilities compete in a local creative arts competition. The competition includes 53 categories in the visual arts division this year that range from oil painting to leatherwork to paint-by-number kits. In addition, there are 120 categories in the performing arts pertaining to all aspects of music, dance, drama, and creative writing. A national selection committee chooses first, second and third place winners among all of the entries. Select winners are invited to attend the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival each year.
American Legion Auxiliary Involvement:
Since 2000, the Auxiliary has played a key role in NVCAF as a cosponsor of the event, along with Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition to raising funds, Auxiliary departments also provide volunteers who assist with everything from punching meal tickets to stuffing programs to ironing costumes for the stage show. Best of all, Auxiliary members have the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with the veterans who participate.

Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown. Texas
Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown, Texas is a beautiful cave. Inner Space Cavern was found while Interstate Highway 35 was being built in 1963. It has many formations. One of my favorites is bacon. In the video there are several outstanding images. The photographs are provided by me and my husband, Clicking & Brushing Art. Let us know which ones are your favorites. We were on Tour #16 on April 30, 2012 with Smitty as the guild. He did an absolutely wonderful job of informing his group about the cave. The vast cave formations can cause an over-active creative mind to see animals, people and scenes in the cave formations. It was like visiting a totally different world.

Introduction to Arlington, Virginia
Arlington is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, on the west bank of the Potomac River directly across from Washington, D.C. Although sometimes referred to as a city, Arlington is actually a county which contains no incorporated towns or cities within its boundaries. Originally part of the 10-mile square area set aside in 1791 for the nation’s capital, the land now comprising Arlington County was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia by the U.S. Congress in 1846 and was known at the time as Alexandria County. In 1852, the independent City of Alexandria was incorporated from a portion of the County, leading to confusion, as two adjacent municipal entities continued to share the same name (Alexandria). The confusion was resolved in 1920, when Alexandria County renamed itself Arlington County, borrowing its name from the Arlington National Cemetery, which had been established during the Civil War on the grounds of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's former home, Arlington House.
Although best known generally as the home of the Pentagon, The Iwo Jima War Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery, the County is also an important employment center. The Federal Government accounts for the lion's share of the roughly 200,000 jobs in Arlington, but high-tech companies have become increasingly prominent, as have several major associations, Fortune 500 companies, and other nationally known employers. The County’s residential population is among the most highly educated in the nation and is increasingly diverse. Arlington is the home of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and is serviced by the Orange, Blue and Yellow lines of the Washington Metro. The County is traversed by two Interstate highways, I-66 and I-395; as well as by the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
Arlington Area Attractions
The name Arlington is synonymous in many people's minds with Arlington National Cemetery, the most famous national cemetery in the United States. Veterans from all the nation's wars are buried in the cemetery, as are two former Presidents (John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft). Also located in Arlington are the Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, and several notable memorials, including the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial), the U.S. Air Force Memorial, and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.
Other attractions in Arlington include the Arlington Arts Center, founded in 1976 and housed in the historic Maury School; the Arlington Historical Museum, housed in a two-story brick structure built in 1891 and currently standing as the oldest school building in Arlington County. The Ball-Sellers house, a one-room log cabin with a loft built by a farmer named John Ball in 1742, is a rare example of an ordinary person's dwelling of the 1700s. The Ellipse Arts Center is a 3,000 square foot visual arts facility which opened in 1990, and presents a diverse schedule of high quality programs in the visual arts. A wealth of other attractions abound in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including the following:
The National Mall
Ford's Theatre
The National Archives
National Air and Space Museum
International Spy Museum
Lincoln Theatre
John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Chinatown
African American Civil War Memorial
Blair House
Folger Shakespeare Library
National Geographic Society
Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
National Building Museum
Visitors to Arlington can take the very short trip to the other side of the Potomac, where the city of Washington hosts several major league professional sports franchises. These include football's Redskins (NFL), baseball's Nationals (MLB), basketball's Wizards (NBA) and Mystics (WNBA), hockey's Capitals (NHL), soccer's DC United (MLS), and lacrosse's Bayhawks (MLL).
