Brainwrap at Georgetown Theater in Indy
Brainwrap opens in Georgetown Theater in downtown Indianapolis Indiana.
*RARE* NS 1071, the CNJ Heritage SD70ACe, leads NS 375 WB, through Georgetown, Indiana on 12/16/18
This morning, I saw a post on Facebook about NS 375, which apparently had NS 1071, the Central New Jersey SD70ACe leading. After getting home from Church, I asked a friend of mine where it was. He told me that it was in Youngtown yard, so I packed my camera gear and headed towards downtown. I originally planned to shoot the train at the amphitheater in New Albany, Indiana. However the plan quickly changed, as I crossed over the Ohio River, and looked to my right and saw the train passing the amphitheater. I decided to catch it in Georgetown, near a drive in movie theater. I set up at the Baylor Wissman Road crossing and waited. After a little while, the train appeared, and came to a stop before the crossing. I am still unclear about why they stopped, because he had a clear signal. About 10 minutes later, the train started moving again, and rolled out of Georgetown. With only 25 cars, the train got up to speed fast. This was the second time I’ve seen this unit, and I got a much better view of it this time. As the last car went out of view, I packed up, and headed home.

Lorraine Theatre Hoopeston ILL Apollo 13 Premiere 1995
Watch a small town theater owner pack them in with the opening of Apollo 13 on June 22, 1995.
The Lorraine Theater’s premiere of Apollo 13 featured a live television feed in the lobby from NASA tracking the latest Space Shuttle mission and imported NASA Ice Cream used by the astronauts. Outside was a Carbon Arc searchlight like the type used to light the Apollo mission launches lighted the night sky.
The Lorraine Theater opened its doors in 1922. It is located about 100 miles South of Chicago in the small farm town of Hoopeston, Ill with a population of just over 6000.
From October 1987 until May 2007 the theater was owned by Gregory Boardman. When Mr. Boardman took over, the theater still used two carbon arc projectors and vacuum tube sound amplifiers that had been originally installed in 1953 with the advent of Cinemascope. The only refreshments offered were a coin operated soft drink and popcorn machine. Patrons were not allowed to take food or drink into the auditorium.
Over the years, Boardman breathed new life back into this old rundown single screen theater. He added new state of the art projection, a new seamless screen and an HPS 4000 sound system designed and installed by John Allen - a system better than Dolby!
The 90's hailed the introduction of Digital Theater Sound. DTS, Dolby Digital and Sony's 8-channel Digital were the formats released during the decade. Boardman wasted no time installing the latest equipment allowing the Lorraine to project any first run movie in the latest digital sound formats. This propelled his theater over other single screen and multiplex theaters in the area still offering only mono sound.
Many other improvements were made to the theater including a full service snack bar, reupholstered/ realigned seats allowing more leg room, new carpeting, marquee refurbishing and several other building improvements.
It soon became clear that this small town was just not big enough to support the impressive improvements Boardman made and still continue to show first run movies. So he started to promote his theater to near-by larger towns such as Champagne and Danville. He advertised in their newspapers, radio and TV stations to attract a larger audience.
The Lorraine's décor, visual and sound features were so refined that the theater was gaining an impressive word-of-mouth following from as far away as Chicago. Boardman’s foresight in the installment of superior sound and visual equipment rivaled and in most cases proved to be better than theaters in Los Angeles.
Boardman also went a step further and organized imaginative movie premiere presentations. His promotions were so spectacular that he would often attract live TV and Radio news to cover his movie premieres. In September of 1998 he built a second screen he named, “The Lorraine II” in order to obtain first run movies faster to keep up with demand.
Greg Boardman loved his theater and was a real showman. His creative events put the Lorraine Theater and the town of Hoopeston, Ill on the map. The town was very fortunate to have had this outstanding movie theater during his ownership.
In May of 2006, Boardman put the Lorraine theaters up for sale citing the need to focus on his family. The theaters were sold in May of 2007. The Lorraine changed ownership twice since then and with the lack of knowledge, promotion and showmanship once common place for Boardman, the Lorraine theaters slowly started to deteriorate and attendance from the locals and surrounding cities declined.
The owners struggled to keep the theater alive but ultimately decided the hefty price tag associated with the latest advances in the technology of Digital Projection were just too much of an investment to manage. They closed the doors in April 2012 and unable to sell the property, the theaters went into foreclosure.
When the utilities were turned off by the bank in May of 2013, the Loraine’s original main building fell into greater disrepair. Renovations of the interior and required upgrade to the visual equipment would now cost over $300,000. A local citizen group named Save the Lorraine Foundation was formed in 2013 in hopes to restore and bring the theater, again, back to life as a multi-purpose venue serving the community.
