Kazbegi - Caucasus Georgia
During my Georgia trip I went to Caucasus mountains. To the area of Kazbegi. I spend a couple of days there visit Stepansminda, the Trinity Church and the 1-day hike to the Gergeti glacier. Especially the last one the hike is though and hard. But the breathtaking views are very rewarding.

Georgia - Mtskheta - Inside the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
Inside the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Mtskheta, Georgia.
The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (Georgian: სვეტიცხოვლის საკათედრო ტაძარი, svet'icxovlis sak'atedro t'adzari; literally the Cathedral of the Living Pillar) is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral located in the historic town of Mtskheta, Georgia, to the northwest of the Georgian capital Tbilisi. A masterpiece of the Early Middle Ages, Svetitskhoveli is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is currently the second largest church building in Georgia, after the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Known as the burial site of Christ's mantle, Svetitskhoveli has long been one of the principal Georgian Orthodox churches and is among the most venerated places of worship in the region. The present structure was completed in 1029 by the medieval Georgian architect Arsukisdze, although the site itself dates back to the early fourth century.
Svetitskhoveli is considered an endangered cultural landmark; it has survived a variety of adversities, and many of its priceless frescoes have been lost due to being razed and whitewashed by the Russian Imperial authorities.

Kazbegi National Park is located on the northern slopes of the mighty Caucasus range, and its protected area covers a total of over 8,700 hectares. At 5,047 metres above sea level, Kazbegi Mountain (or Mkinvartsveri) is the third highest mountain in Georgia, and is surrounded by myths and religious tradition. According to Greek mythology, as punishment for teaching mankind how to make fire, the Titan Prometheus was chained to a mountainside in the Caucasus for all eternity. According to Georgian stories, it was the icy slopes of Kazbegi to which he was chained. Prometheus (known as Amirani in Georgia) was supposedly imprisoned in a cave 4,000 meters high. The cave, now called Betlemi (Bethlehem), later served as a dwelling for orthodox monks, and is said to have contained many sacred relics, including Abraham’s tent and Christ’s manger. Hot springs and acidic and carbonated lakes surround the mountain, and earth tremors are fairly frequent. Covered with 135 square kilometres of glacier, Kazbegi is a great place for ice climbing and mountaineering. The Dariali Gorge is an impossibly steep cleft in the mountains connecting Russia and Georgia, running for 18km from Stepantsminda to the Russian border at Zemo Larsi (Upper Lars). For millennia, this mountain passage has been strategically crucial, and has been fortified since at least 150 BC. In places, the cliff faces are more than 1,000m high, and medieval watchtowers, waterfalls and wildlife make this one of the most incredible roads in the world. The steep valleys either side of the gorge are great places for bird watching. Eagles, hawks and the massive griffon vultures all nest among the rocky outcrops. The town of Stepantsminda (also called Kazbegi) itself is charming and a wonderful base camp for exploring the region further. There are many guesthouses where locals are happy to treat you like family, rustic and beautiful with views of the mountains, and often the picturesque Gergeti Trinity Church.

Georgia
Kasbegi
is a village in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of northeastern Georgia.
Mount Kazbek is a stratovolcano of 5,047 m altitude that is located in Georgia, near the border with the Republic of North Ossetia that is part of the Russian Federation. It is the fourth summit of the Caucasus Mountains, which has its highest summit on Mount Elbrus, and, it is the second highest peak in Georgia.
It is a beautiful glacial peak of moderate difficulty. From Georgia, the starting point of the ascent is in the small town of Kazbegi, about 150 kilometers from Tbilisi, the capital. From Kazbegi, in two days of walking through the Col de Sabertse of 3,150 m and the Gergeti glacier, you reach a refuge at 3,700 meters of altitude. From the refuge, a long ascent by snow and ice to the south gives access to the summit.
The mountain of kasbegi, my first experience in mountain climbing we managed to conquer its gap to 5046 meters at sea level, we began its ascent in the viewpoint of kasbegi, its steep and hilly roads make it a little complicated climb, and attractive for the eyes , its brown mountains and lack of vegetation because of the long and harsh winter that is being lived, allow visitors to capture the majesty of its mountains, the Caucasus. After its difficult climb to the Meteo station at about 3800 m / sm, we rest and have a little lunch, to be able to make an acclimatization at 4200 meters, about two hours from the Meteo station.
From the Meteo station we left at midnight to reach the chasm of Mount Kasbagi, we were always walking through the glacier connected with our friends from the guide and the strongest members to the front, as much of the way is passing through cracks that it is leaving the movement of the glacier. Make the ascent when it is by over of the 4500 meters it is something very difficult, for me because the lack of oxygen and walking with the snow is something that requires much physical exertion, teamwork is essential all members must to be in complete harmony to be able to achieve our goal. When I got closer to the top, my heart beat more excited to see everything from this height, reaching the top for me was the most satisfying, to contemplate the Caucasus from the highest of its mountains feel the force with which the wind passes and lift the snow to take it and leave it on another mountain, feel the cold sharping in the face and fingers is something that makes us feel alive and reminds us of the power of nature and that we are only passengers in this life.
Thanks to the people with whom I shared this unforgettable experience as well as to our guides who always took care of us and motivated us in every step to achieve our goal.
