France, US, Germany commemorate WWI Battle of Belleau Wood
(27 May 2018) High-ranking military officials from the U.S., France and Germany took part in Memorial Day ceremonies on Sunday to mark the centennial of the battle of Belleau Wood - a turning point in World War I and a key moment in Marine Corps history.
The ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in the village of Belleau included speeches by military officials prayers, wreath laying, reading of poems and the national anthems of the three countries.
A crowd of more than 5,000 attended the event celebrating the fierce and deadly month-long battle considered as the first major engagement of U.S. troops in the war, especially Marines whose bravery helped the Allied Forces win in Belleau.
Among them was Mack Shively, 67, grandson of World War I Marine Corps Private Norman Alfred Roberts.
Roberts, wounded during the Battle of Belleau Wood in June of 1918, made it home to America before the war ended.
His unit commander Lt. Carleton Burr was killed in nearby Vierzy, France in July 1918 and buried in the America Cemetery of Belleau.

Memorial Day Ceremony (2014) at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, France
(All photos and audio was recorded over Memorial Day weekend 2014 on-location.)
This is a summary of the US Marine Corps ceremony at Belleau Wood, commemorating the Marines who died there helping the French defend Paris against the Germans during World War I.
Among those fallen is a relative of ours, Private Daniel Dopp (81st Company, 6th Machine Gun Battalion, US Marine Corps), who died from incoming shellfire on June 9th, 1918.

World War I battle of Belleau Wood was a turning point for US
(26 May 2018) It was the spring of 1918, and the German army was making a final push toward Paris.
The only thing in their way was a contingent of Allied troops, including untested US forces near the Marne River in northern France.
Among them: US Army 1st Lt. Gordon Kaemmerling, a precocious and athletic Harvard graduate who had jumped at the opportunity to help the United States leave its shell of isolationism and join the war.
On June 6, 1918, the US forces attacked, storming across the open fields near Belleau Wood.
Germans sprayed them with shells and machine-gun fire from a densely forested hill.
Without proper artillery cover, the Americans were mowed down easily at first.
In the chaos, the 26-year-old Kaemmerling rushed to help his comrades, and was nearly torn in two by shrapnel and bullets.
The bravery of Kaemmerling and others helped the Americans chase the German forces out of Belleau Wood by the end of the month.
The battle became a defining moment in World War I, not just containing the German push along the Western Front but proving the Americans' military mettle for all to see.
Victory bonded the Allies, and that friendship became the cornerstone of global diplomacy for most of the last 100 years.
That partnership is being celebrated during the centennial of the battle of Belleau Wood as the US marks the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, even amid some trans-Atlantic strains.
Germany acknowledged the arrival of the US forces on the Western Front would be a burden, but peace with the Bolsheviks in Soviet Russia meant that German troops could reinforce another onslaught on France.
It was a unique window of opportunity for the Germans, and when it came, they got within a week's march from Paris.
Victory after four years of fighting seemed possible.
The American force was still considered a very untried organisation, and among the French and British, they were not sure how well they would perform, said retired US Army Col. David S. Jones, a historian.
The initial plan was to give many of the US forces more time to train before being thrown into battle, but Germany had other ideas.
In desperation, the French asked US Gen. John J. Black Jack Pershing for the immediate deployment of some of his troops to stop the gap near the Marne, northeast of Paris.
US soldiers and Marines were soon sent off to Belleau.
The combination of inexperience and gung-ho enthusiasm became the stuff of legend.
The battle is one of the first things taught to any US Marine, said Owen Gardner Finnegan, a Marine who served in Afghanistan and was visiting the Belleau Wood cemetery.
Marine Corps lore has it that one officer, told there was a general retreat, said, Retreat? Hell, we just got here!
The Americans made their vigour, youth and resilience count against the more experienced but battle-weary Germans, who were approaching their fifth year of fighting.
When the Americans were confronted with intense enemy fire, instead of ducking, instead of retreating, they charged, said French historian Jean-Michel Steg.
At first, it was a matter of survival.
Steadily, however, they established themselves in hostile terrain where any tree could hide an enemy.
They stood their ground in man-to-man fighting.
Instead of marching on Paris, the Germans soon found themselves on the back foot.
Much more was at stake than a patch of ground along a 350-mile (560-kilometre) front line.
It became something different. It became a test of will, Steg said.
He never got the chance.

Tour of American WW I monuments, battlefields, and a cemetery in northeastern France
World War I Battle of Belleau Wood Centennial - Historian Mitchell Yockelson led a tour of American monuments, battlefields, and a cemetery in northeastern France to commemorate the centennial of several battles in May and June of 1918. The program began 60 miles from Paris at the Chateau-Thierry American Monument on a hill overlooking a small city of that name where American & French forces helped to stop a German offensive towards Paris. The tour continued a short distance away at Belleau Wood, where U.S. Marines fought Germans for three weeks. The program ended at the Aisne-Marne Cemetery, the final resting place of almost 2300 Americans who died in this region in 1918

Macron at memorial to 130,000 French and German soldiers in WWI
(6 Nov 2018) French President Emmanuel Macron attended a solemn ceremony on Tuesday at the Douaumont Ossuary, a memorial to 130,000 unidentified French and German soldiers near Verdun, amid thousands of white crosses marking the graves.
The 10-month battle at Verdun — the longest in World War I — killed 163,000 French and 143,000 German soldiers and wounded hundreds of thousands of others.
Between February and December 1916, an estimated 60 million shells were fired in the battle. One out of four didn't explode. The frontline villages destroyed in the fighting were never rebuilt.
The battlefield zone still holds millions of unexploded shells, making the area so dangerous that housing and farming are forbidden.
The ceremony near Verdun is part of several ones that the French president is attending in various WWI battle zone sites in Eastern and Northern France until Saturday November the 10th.
This tour of the memorial sites will be followed by an international ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice on November 11th.
More than 60 heads of state and government, including US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, are expected to attend.

MEMORIAL DAY - BELLEAU 2016 #1
Départ des porte-drapeaux
Right up to Armistice Day, US clout in WWI kept increasing
(6 Nov 2018) By this time of year exactly one hundred years ago, in 1918, United States soldiers had been involved in enough World War I battles that a half-dozen cemeteries are now dotted across northern France to honour their dead.
A majority of the close to 2,300 US soldiers now buried at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery died fighting German troops during the almost month-long battle of Belleau Wood.
While many across the Atlantic considered WWI to be Europe's war, US troops were instrumental in turning the tide in after the nation had shed its isolationism and declared commitment to stand by its European allies by joining them.
In the 1,5 years that followed after the US declared war on Germany in April 1917, a standing army of 127,500 had turned into an armed force of two million in Europe, with an additional two million soldiers ready to be deployed.
Speed was of the essence. Russia left the war in March 1918 and Germany had sent its troops to the Western front for a final full onslaught. Just in time, US soldiers started arriving en masse.
The Americans attacked without much preparation, French historian Jean-Michel Steg told the Associated Press at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery earlier this year, adding that US troops showed a lot of courage - quickly attacking against the enemy instead of retreating.
But parttaking in the fighting came at a heavy cost for the United States, with an estimated 360,000 casualties including 126,000 killed in action and 234,000 wounded.
Still, it hardly compared to French military losses of 1.4 million or those of the British imperial forces of 1.1 million.
Not all of those who perished in various battles were army soldiers.
Just outside Paris, a large number of volunteers rest at the French commune of Suresnes' American Cemetery, which was dedicated in 1937.
They volunteered in every capacity imaginable to fight for the cause of freedom and liberty, said cemetery superintendent Keith Stadler.
Those who didn't make it through the war were buried at Surnesnes' graveyard along with some 1,500 US soldiers who fought in all the major battles of the War.
US President Donald Trump is expected to join other world leaders at World War I armistice events hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron over the weekend. He is set to visit some of the burial sites.
