GERO ONSEN: Japanese Ryokan, Kaiseki Cuisine, and Onsen Baths
Gero Onsen (下呂温泉) is a quiet hot springs town located in the Japanese Alps. During the Edo period, the poet Hayashi Razan called Gero one of Japan’s three best onsen. More than a million visitors come to Gero every year, and it is still rated as one of the best hot spring resorts in Japan. Gero is located between Nagoya and Takayama. It’s only about an hour south of Takayama and is worth stopping for a night or two if you attend the Takayama Festival.
We stayed at a large ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) called Yunoshimakan.
The food and service were outstanding. The facilities are a bit dated and could use some work. All in all, however, we really enjoyed our stay.
The public onsen baths are massive there, and I had the outdoor bath all to myself early in the morning. It was amazing. The Old Man was kicked out of the public bath because of his sweet 90s tattoo, but we had a private bath with our room. There are also larger private baths for families (or those with tattoos) within the resort.

下呂温泉 Gero Onsen, One of the best hot springs in Japan.
岐阜県下呂市
群馬県の草津温泉、兵庫県の有馬温泉と並んで日本三名泉のひとつです。
下呂温泉は無色透明でなめらかな肌触りが特徴です。
アルカリ性単純温泉のpHが約9.18、肌をツルツルにします。
その為「美人の湯」とも言われます。
Gero Onsen is loceted in Gifu Prefecture.
It is known as one of the three best hot sorings in Japan along with Kusatsu in Gunma and Arima in Hyogo.
The town is small and surrounded by mountains.
Beautiful Hida river flows in the center.
It keeps traditional Japanese atmosphere, it was very nice to stroll around the town.
Gero Onsen has several health benefits such as,
beautifying skin, rheumatism, neuralgia, motility disturbance.
The water is very gentle.

Virtual Trip To Gero Onsen Gassho Village in Gifu Prefecture,Japan
Gero Onsen Gassho Village comprises 10 thatched A-frame long-houses from the UNESCO World Heritage site of nearby Shirakawa-go that have been re-assembled on the hill top site just outside Gero.
Some of the buildings were thus saved from destruction when a new dam in the Shirakawa-go area would have flooded them.
Of the 10 historic buildings the large Historic Odo House (kyu Odo-ke) is registered as an Important Cultural Property and shows how life was lived in a typical Gassho-style house using mannequins and models. On display are original agricultural tools and machinery used in silk production.
Another Gassho house, now named the Shirasagi Theater, has been converted into a theater and puts on a variety of different performances during the year. The Iwasaki House holds a collection of folk crafts.

中津川から国道257号線を寄り道しながら走って行きました。
なので、あまり早い時間の到着でなかったし、またお天気も良くなかったので軽く少しだけの散策になりました。

下呂温泉(#2)Gero Hot Spring, 禅昌寺 Zensho-ji Temple
禅昌寺、とても美しいお寺です。
雪舟作と言われる大達磨像や、飛騨一と言われる日本庭園、見ごたえあります。
Zensho-ji Temple located in Gero City
Zen Buddhist temple of Rinzai sect Myoshin-ji Temple group and is said to have been founded in 1377, Kamakura period.
It is very beautiful temple.
It has beautiful Japanese landscape garden, precious temple treasures are of great worth.

Scattered over the site are a number of onsen foot baths (ashi-no-yu) and a hand bath (te-no-yu).
