Gertrude Saddle Route: Alpine Tramping (Hiking) Series | New Zealand
Deep in the heart of Fiordland lies the Gertrude Saddle. It’s a track that provides stunning views but it is also a track that must be respected as the consequences of mistakes can be severe. This route can be mistaken for a simple day walk, but this definitely is not the case. It’s a very demanding climb and should only be attempted by those with a high level of backcountry alpine experience and fitness. This video takes you through the entire track and shows you how to prepare for a successful trip so that you make it home safely.

[Cinematic Vlog] Hiking in South Island, New Zealand Travel with Campervan (Mt.Cook/Milford Sound)
This is my Travel Vlog in South Island, New Zealand. Travel with Campervan (someone called Motorhome) is one of my must do list. Me and my friend made a plan for this, and I couldn’t miss this chance for Vlog. The weather of August in New Zealand was not that sunny all day, but I had a campervan that I don’t need to warry about plan. Having a Campervan in travel was so versatile in making a plan.
1. Campervan
- The Campervan was very high and it has water in it, so it was very hard to drive. You need to be careful when you drive this van in unpaved road. And remember, NZ is right handled car.
- Travel with Campervan is so useful for making a plan. You don’t need to make a plan and book a hotel or something. No need to warry about when you arrived in your favorite place but weather is suck. You can make your plan anytime you want. You can stay more, or less.
- Kitchen and shower booth is not that big. Kinda uncomfortable. You have to worry about water level every time when you use water, even flush! So I used campsite’s facility. Cheap, Big, NO LIMITATION for water.
2. Camp Site
- New Zealand is one of best country for campervan. I used app called ‘Camper Mate’( for searching Powered site, Non-Powered Site for your campervan. It shows toilet, dump site very easy. Lots of reviews is most powerful way to choose the site.
- Most of camp site’s reception desk closes aroud 5pm ~ 9pm. But when you arrived late, use the campsite first, and pay next morning. But if you need wifi voucher, hurry up before camp close.
- TOP 10 Holiday Park is always could be your best choice.
3. Hiking
- Milford sound trekking is most famous hiking in New Zealand. But it takes 5 days, and close at August. You can use App called Hiking Project( for searching a best hiking palce for you. Don’r forget download a Data for Hiking APP. No Internet in most place in Hiking place (or mountain, lake…)
- There is a expected time for hike. I spent a lot of time for filming views and vlogs so it tooks a DAY for one hike. But this is special case maybe.
- There is a level in Hiking Project App, so don’t believe yourself too much!
-
4. USIM
- Vodafone, No contract, Only Usim, Tip up with your credit card, less txt, less call, more Data for internet. This is my best plan for using internet in New Zealand.
- Only internet in city. Don’t forget to download the Map data. (And some Netflix Episodes.)
5. Food
- Hard to find a restaurant. Campsite located in side of city, or mountain. Need to prepare a menu for self cook. 1day 1 Steak requird. (Check the Meat’s price. y’all knows about NZ Beaf and lamp right?
- When you pass the city, go get some food in grocery store. water!

After climbing Maid Marian, a 900m face (grade 20) on the South Face of Marian Peak. Dan Joll and I try to cover ground quickly in the fading light. It was a lot of fun to move light and fast, and be surrounded by such incredible terrain. The weather was great, and the sunset was beautiful.
We're scrambling on the terrain between Barrier Knob and Barrier Peak in the Darran Mountains of Fiordland, New Zealand. The route continues down to Gertrude Saddle to the NZAC's Homer Hut

Free Walks in Milford Sound – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand

-- About this video --
Today we are doing two of the free walks in Milford Sound. The Milford Sound Lookout Walk and the Milford Sound Foreshore Walk. They are both super short, only 20 minutes each, so if you have some spare time in Milford Sound or are just visiting Milford Sound on a budget, then these walks are well worth considering.
Both of these walks are accessed at the waterfront of Milford Sound (Milford Sound Marina) so we hit the Milford Sound Lookout Walk first, 10 minutes uphill through forest until we reach a viewing platform with trees framing those famous views of Milford Sound including Mitre Peak, Sinbad Gully, Lion Rock and Stirling Falls.
Next, we check out the Milford Foreshore Walk which is a 20 minute loop through beech forest to the open views on the Milford Sound waterfront. Here are where you can get some of the best photos of Milford Sound!

2 Weeks Exploring New Zealand's South Island in our Festive Campervan
The video pretty closely follows the route we took after picking our van up in Christchurch. Here's a day by day run down of our two-week visit:
Day 01: Picked up our van in Christchurch, provisioned and headed north to Kaikoura
Day 02: Biked through Wairau Valley wineries & explored the Marlborough Sounds
Day 03: Hiked in the sounds then drove West towards Abel Tasman
Day 04: Cruise and hike through Abel Tasman National Park
Day 05: Rock Climbing at Paynes Ford near Takaka
Day 06: Long drive down the west coast stopping at Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, Hokitika Gorge (not worth it!) and Bruce Bay before camping in Mount Aspiring National Park
Day 07: Headed to Wanaka and hiked Isthmus Peak
Day 08: Bungee jumping and garden walking in Queenstown. Drove to Te Anau and Fiordland National Park
Day 09: Cruise in Milford Sound and a visit to the glow worm caves in Te Anau
Day 10: Hiked Gertrude Saddle in Fiordland National Park and drove to the Southeast coast
Day 11: Explored the East coast ending up in Dunedin
Day 12: Dunedin botanical gardens, drove to Lake Pukaki and Hiked Hooker Valley Track in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park
Day 13: Lake Pukaki, lavender gardens, and Lake Tekapo. Camped at some random lake on our way back to Christchurch.
Day 14: Returned our van in Christchurch and enjoyed some beers around town
The guy at the van rental place laughed when we told him everywhere we went because we pronounced nearly everything wrong, so your guess is as good as mine. :D
We rented our van from Escape Campervans and absolutely loved it. Each van has a custom paint job and plenty of space for two. They've got rentals in the US as well!

-- About this video --
Today we are doing one of the free things to do in Milford Sound which is the walk to The Chasm. The Chasm Walk is located between The Homer Tunnel and Milford Sound on the Milford Road and was one of the activities we missed the other day, so we thought we’d check out this awesome force of nature.
The Chasm Walk is only about a 20 minutes loop walk on a super accessible track. It’s a great taste of Fiordland National Park forest and an excellent short walk in Fiordland National Park.
What’s more, if you are looking for something free in Milford Sound, then this is a good Milford Sound free activity!
So what do you think of The Chasm? Would you do this free walk in Milford Sound or stop by it on the Milford Sound Road? LUK in the comments!
