Amiens Cathedral Tourist Guide ???????? Travel In France - Travel And Discover
Amiens cathedral contains the largest medieval interior in Western Europe, supported by 126 pillars. Both the nave and the chancel are vast but extremely light, with considerable amounts of stained glass surviving, despite the depredations of war.
The ambulatory surrounding the choir is richly decorated with polychrome sculpture and flanked by numerous chapels. One of the most sumptuous is the Drapers' chapel. The cloth industry was the most dynamic component of the medieval economy, especially in northern France, and the cloth merchants were keen to display their wealth and civic pride. Another striking chapel is dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury, a 13th-century dedication that complements the cathedral's own very full list of martyrs.

Battle of Amiens (1918) that changed everything (WWI) (France) - BBC News - 7th August 2018
On the eve of this battle in France 100 years ago (which began on 8th August 1918), we find out why this battle was so important. It was important because it changed everything. On the Western Front, trench lines (some of which had not moved in four years), was suddenly left behind, as the allies poured through the German lines and were to then end in 100 days, the war that had killed millions, in the previous four years of such destructive warfare. This battle was the beginning of the end of World War One, (The War to End all Wars).
Northern France Road Trip (Le Touquet + Amiens + Montreuil-sur-mer) • Emma Rose Daniels
Last month we travelled to France on a road trip for a few days. We stayed in Le Touquet (my favourite place in Northern France) and visited Amiens, Abbeville and Montreuil-sur-mer. We didn't need to travel far from Calais for a quintessentially French holiday!
I feel quite lucky to live in the south east of England, which means travelling to France is quite easy and only an hour or so away! France is also a country I love to travel in, so I hope that comes through in my video.

Prince William marks Battle of Amiens centenary in French city
Relatives of soldiers who served and died in the conflict spoke of their pride and sadness as they joined the Prime Minister and the Duke of Cambridge at the event in Amiens Cathedral, northern France, staged exactly 100 years since the start of the offensive. The battle changed the course of the war, as the comprehensive Allied victory, due to superior tactics, use of technology and leadership, finally convinced German commanders they could not win. William acknowledged the debt owed to the First World War troops in a message printed in the official programme, saying: 'The Battle of Amiens, and the continued fighting which followed during the summer of 1918, brought the Allies hope and optimism after four long years of bloodshed and stalemate. While it is right that we have collectively commemorated many of the significant battles and campaigns of those years, it is important that the success of the Battle of Amiens takes its rightful place in our shared history.' Pictured: Prince William bows in the cathedral (main image), after earlier being greeted with a curtsy from Mrs May (inset).

Floating market gardens (“hortillonnages”) dot the city’s canals. The Musée de Picardie shows art and antiquities spanning centuries. Amiens is a city and commune in northern France, 120 km (75 mi) north of Paris and 100 km (62 mi) south-west of Lille. It is the capital of the Somme department in Hauts-de-France. The city had a population of 136,105 according to the 2006 census. It has one of the biggest university hospitals in France with a capacity of 1,200 beds.
Amiens Cathedral, the tallest of the large, classic, Gothic churches of the 13th century and the largest in France of its kind, is a World Heritage Site. The author Jules Verne lived in Amiens from 1871 until his death in 1905, and served on the city council for 15 years. During December, the town hosts the largest Christmas market in northern France. Amiens is known for a few local foods, including macarons d'Amiens, almond paste biscuits; tuiles amienoises, chocolate and orange curved biscuits; pâté de canard d'Amiens, duck pâté in pastry; la ficelle Picarde, an oven-baked cheese-topped crêpe; and flamiche aux poireaux, a puff pastry tart made with leeks and cream.
The first known settlement at this location was Samarobriva (Somme bridge), the central settlement of the Ambiani, one of the principal tribes of Gaul. The town was given the name Ambianum by the Romans, meaning settlement of the Ambiani people. Amiens was part of Francia from the 5th century. Normans sacked the city in 859 and again in 882. In 1113, the city was recognized by King Louis VI of France and joined to the Crown of France in 1185. In 1597, Spanish soldiers held the city during the six-month Siege of Amiens, before Henry IV regained control. During the 18th and 19th century, the textile tradition of Amiens became famous for its velours
Amiens, the regional prefecture of Picardy, is also the prefecture of the Somme, one of the three departments (with Oise and Aisne) in the region. Located in the Paris Basin, across the country the city benefits from a privileged geographical position (proximity to Paris, Lille, Rouen, London and Brussels). At the crossroads of major European routes of movement (A1, A16 and A29), the city is also at the heart of a major rail star. As the crow flies, the city is 115 kilometres (71 mi) from Paris, 97 kilometres (60 mi) from Lille, 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Rouen, 162 kilometres (101 mi) from Le Havre and 144 kilometres (89 mi) from Reims. At the regional level, Amiens is located 53 kilometres (33 mi) north of Beauvais, 71 kilometres (44 mi) west of Saint-Quentin, 66 kilometres (41 mi) from Compiègne and 102 kilometres (63 mi) from Laon.
Amiens is a hub between the Île de France and the rest of the north of France; Normandy and Benelux; and France and Great Britain. Amiens is not directly on principal European road and rail arteries, such as the A1 motorway and the Paris-Lille TGV train line, at present. However, at halfway between the urban areas of Lille and Paris, Amiens has good conditions of service and accessibility, including motorways (at the junction of the A16 and A29).

Amiens & Rouen, Normandy, France
An easy day-trip by train north of Paris will bring you to the cathedral towns of Amiens and Rouen, the gem of Normandy. Amiens has an attractive pedestrian zone running through the modern downtown, and an interesting, if small, Old Town, but it is the cathedral we have come to see the largest gothic cathedral in France, the land that invented this enduring form. Not only large, but perfect in form with all the standard gothic design you could hope for.
From here we continue by train to nearby Rouen, which has the largest collection of half-timbered medieval buildings in France. Easy to explore on foot, start out from the train station and keep on going through one historic lane after another. Here too you will find a famous cathedral but in this case the town itself is the main attraction, its narrow streets lined with thriving shops and historic monument, including the place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Photographed during the Christmas season when tykes are skating in the main square and colorful lights line the shop fronts, this is a special time and place to enjoy.
