MEXICO: CENOTE ANGELITA SCUBA DIVING IN POISON
This scuba dive, wow. Cenote Angelita in Tulum, Mexico was amazing. First off, it's a deep one at 34m (100ft). Secondly, there is a 10 foot thick layer of Hydrogen Sulfide at 30m you are able to pass through. Hydrogen Sulfide is poisonous, and heavily smells of rotten eggs. (I couldn't show you that part in the video). Once through, it turns into a night dive, and you need to use your torches. You only have a few minutes beyond the layer before you have to start ascending again. It's a murky landscape, with petrified trees sticking out of the cloud. Mayans believed that cenotoes were the gateway to the underworld, and yeah, after visiting this one in particular, I can see why.
This was probably one of the most advanced dives I've done. It's not technically difficult, but it is a mental challenge. It's not uncommon for divers to panic a little bit and have difficulty passing the layer. Like always in diving, keeping a calm mind is the most important thing. Anyone can do this dive, it's just remembering to breathe, and realizing you'll be fine.
There are a lot of cenote cave dives scattered all through Riviera Maya, Quintanaroo and Yucatan. I was lucky do quite a few during my travels here. I thought that I wanted to get my Cave Diving cerification, but realized that Cavern diving (when you can still see ambient light) is all I really wanted. You just need to have an advanced cert.
It was the most exhilarating dive I've done yet, I'm not sure if there is anything else like it on the planet. Go in and get wet.

Rio Secreto Tour - Tulum Ruins - Underground Mayan Caves Rivers Mexico!! - Playa Del Carmen / Cancun
Rio Secreto - Playa Del Carmen Mexico - Mayan Underworld Caves River Cenote | Tulum Ruins
Rio Secreto are under ground caves located in Quintana Roo near Playa Del Carmen and Riviera Maya , Mexico, only discovered in 2007. This is a must do if you are in Cancun or Riviera Maya, Mexico. The excursion takes about 6 hours. It starts of with the Rio Secreto Shuttle picking you up from the hotel. Once you arrive you are assigned to different groups and given a brief introduction to the caves and formations.
You then are taken to the dry caves which takes around 1-2 hours. Here you get to learn about the Mayans and how they thought the world was created. The dry caves have natural sun light coming in as well as they have been lit up at different areas using candles and lights. At the end of the dry caves, there is a huge area in which they have seats and there is a light show in which they show a more modern view of how the world was made.
Once you come out of the dry caves, you take a quick shower and suit up in wet suits with life jackets and helmets with a flash light and prepare to go the the sunken caves. These caves do not have any natural light and you have to rely on your helmet light only. This is an amazing tour, you get to walk in underground caves filled with water. Many areas have so much water that you have to swim across. You also get to learn how the caves / coral / calcium formations were made. This is defiantly the coolest part of the tour.
After about 2 hours underground, you come out from another area. At this point you get bicycles to ride down to another entrance. Here you take a small break and get water and fresh fruits as a snack. Then you proceed to this whole in the forest which is an entrance to the caves. This entrance is a opening into a 50ft deep cave. The only way in is to propel down. The guide gives you a tutorial on how to propel down to the caves. These caves are also filled with water. Once you are down the tour continues and you get to see more spectacular caves. This tour ends with coming out of the caves from another area, you take a small walk back to the bicycles, then you bicycle back.
This comes to the end up of the tour, you return all the gear. After this you get to enjoy a Mexican Buffet with the group and tour guide. We had Nadia as our tour guide, she was very friendly and knowledgable. If visiting definitely ask for her.
These caves are millions of years old. It is a once in a life time experience if you are in Mexico, we would recommend it to anyone.

Cenote Angelita, Tulum, Mexico
I so love this dive! Angelita, they call it Nightmare. I call it the wet dream of divers! THat layer of sulphate cloud looks like cloud in the heaven, it just doesn't feel like you're diving just looking at the video but we were diving! Going through that layer of cloud was so fun! One minute we had light, the next pure darkness and eerieness beneath. Shout out to Dive Tulum and Gibran Hoffmann for taking care of us during our stay and dive and providing such a professional service!
UNDERWATER MUSEUM SCUBA DIVING IN CANCUN MEXICO
The MUSA Underwater Museum. Between Cancun and the island of Isla Mujeres in Mexico, there is an incredible place to Scuba dive. It's an underwater sculpture park, acting as a coral reef for all of the incredible animals underwater.
Jason Decaires Taylor a British scultor created the very first park of this kind in 2009. Now it attracts Scuba divers and snorkelers from all over the world. A diving highlight of Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's really easy to get to from Cancun. I hopped on the ferry from Puerto Juarez to Isla Mujeres and found myself a hostel called PocNa. We did a few dives together. 3 on the museum to shoot this video, another few on the nearby Manchones reef, which has a few more sculptures and an incredible amount of fish.
We also did a dive at the nearby wreck called GunBoat 58 during eagle ray mating season. That.... was a show.
If you're not Scuba Certified, you need to join the club. There are a lot of PADI dive centres down there that can hook you up. The earth is 70% water, and we only explore the 30% that is land. Go and Get Wet!

Puerto Morelos Mexico Dive at the Aquarium with Aquanauts 5/22/2015
Description
Gill and Jon Are Hot, Wet & Engaged!
We took the plunge in Tulum, Mexico over Christmas 2013 and got to celebrate with both of our families. It was pretty great.
Shot at Rosa del Viento, Casa Cenotes, and Akumal on a GoPro Hero3. Special thanks to La Calypso Dive Center! No sea turtles were harmed in the making of this video.
Cenote Angelita, Tulum, Mexico - August 2019
A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings (Source: Wikipedia)
Angelita is an incredible sinkhole. It is described as an underwater river that flows through 40 meters below surface. One can observe the thick cloud (about 3 meters) of hydrogen sulfide where salt water mixes with fresh water, throughout the video. At about minute 2:37 we start going under the cloud (nice green color) and afterwards under the cloud entirely it is just darkness since hardly any natural light that can penetrate the thick cloud. The odor of hydrogen sulfide is foul (like rotten eggs or thermal baths) - you can both smell/taste it. Once you’re out the water you can still smell it on your wet-suit. Since hydrogen sulfide can’t be good for humans not sure how diving affects divers who come here often. Luckily our eyes are always covered! In any case, we did not linger in the cloud area - most of the dive takes place above the cloud, which is the best part!
Besides the facts, it is a very different, disorienting sensation. Very magical and creepy at the same time.

Take A Swim In Mexico's Spectacular Flooded Caves | 360 VR Video | Refinery29
Warning: this excursion may contain bats. After all, when you decide to take a casual dip in Mexico's ancient, cerulean-streamed cenotes (think: flooded cave), you're bound to encounter a few unexpected surprises. Believed by the Mayans to represent the fluid portal between life and death, cenotes stud the lush landscape of the Quintana Roo region, offering visitors and locals alike the chance to explore their strangely stunning subterranean wonders. Never mind that you might encounter a swarm of fluttering bats waiting just inside the moss-streaked cave mouth; it's all about the experience, right?
Once they've scoped out Tulum's boho paradise of a boutique scene, Cori, Chelsea, and Grace throw on their suits for a slightly more rugged activity — wading into the cenote's jewel-blue waters to beat the afternoon sun. Watch the video above to join the women on their tropical adventure, in virtual reality, of course. Isn't that underground tree something straight out of Dr. Seuss?
