North Korea-China summit analysis
북중 회담 분석 전문가 출연
Given the opaque characteristics of North Korea and China, it's unlikely much will be revealed about the much-anticipated talks between Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping.
Let's take a closer look at the summit now..., and to help us with that we have Dr. Kim Chang-su, advisor for the Korea Research Institute for National Strategy.
Thank you for coming in today Dr. Kim.
President Xi Jinping, in a rare move, wrote an op-ed for the North's ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun ahead of his trip. He said China is happy to see a historic opportunity to resolve Korean Peninsula issues.
He also stressed that Beijing is willing to draft together with Pyeongyang some long-term plans for lasting peace in the region. What do you think those plans could be and what do you think would be Xi's approach to North Korea's denuclearization?
President Xi's intinerary in Pyeongyang is very much under wraps, but what we do know is that he visited the Geumsusan Palace of the Sun this afternoon and that he'll visit the 'Friendship Monument' tomorrow. Significance of the visits?
Here in South Korea, meanwhile, Seoul announced yesterday it will offer 50-thousand tons of rice to North Korea through the World Food Programme.
That's in addition to a previously announced 8-million dollar donation.
Do you think President Xi will follow suit and provide economic support to North Korea?

[NEWS IN-DEPTH] North Korea-China summit analysis
5차 북중 정상회담, 한반도 비핵화 판도 흔들까?
As the world closely watched... North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Chinese President Xi Jinping held summit talks in Pyeongyang today.
Xi, the first Chinese leader to visit North Korea in 14 years, joined Kim for a luncheon today prior to the summit, and attended various cultural events throughout this afternoon.
Tomorrow, he's expected to make a visit to the 'Friendship Monument' which was built to remember the Chinese People's Volunteer Army who sided with the North during the Korean War.
Not much has been revealed about their much-anticipated encounter, so let's now turn to an expert for an in-depth look at this event and what to expect from it.
For that, Dr. Kim Chang-su of the Korea Research Institute for National Strategy joins me in the studio.
1. This is the fifth face-to-face between Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping. Not much has been revealed but could you pinpoint the key agenda at this summit?
2. The idea of Xi visiting North Korea has been in the air since the regime's leader invited Xi when he last visited Beijing. But why does the visit come now?
3. This year marks the 70th anniversary since establishing diplomatic relations between North Korea and China. They have long been traditional allies but a lot has changed over the last seven decades. Could you walk us through the path of their diplomatic ties?
4. How would you assess the current North Korea-China relation?
5. President Xi will stay in Pyeongyang for just two days. The trip will be shorter than any other past visits made by a Chinese leader to North Korea. Why?
6. President Xi Jinping, in a rare move, wrote an op-ed for the North's ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun. He said China is happy to see a historic opportunity to resolve the Korean Peninsula issue,... while stressing that Beijing is willing to draft together with North Korea some long-term plans for lasting peace in the region. What do you think would be Xi Jinping's approach towards North Korea's denuclearization?
7. Xi Jinping visited Russia last week to hold talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Putin, during his summit with Kim Jong-un in April mentioned the need to resume the long-stalled 6-party talks. Do you think Xi would suggest reopening the multilateral talks to Kim this time?
8. How do you think North Korea will react to the idea of resuming multilateral talks on the peninsula's nuclear issue?
9. This morning we woke up to the news of the U.S. Treasury Department targeting new sanctions on a Russian financial firm for helping North Korea channel funds into its nuclear weapons program. The timing is quite interesting. How do you interpret the move?
10. Judging from data, North Korea is now going through one of its toughest times economically. Do you expect Xi Jinping to promise some economic support to North Korea?
11. South Korea announced yesterday it will send 50-thousand tons of rice to North Korea through the World Food Programme. That's in addition to an 8-million-dollar humanitarian aid it approved just recently. How do you see this?
12. The South Korean government has said that it will make sure to listen to the public first, and gather public consensus before seeking additional aid. Do you think enough steps were taken to gather public opinion?
13. President Xi's intinerary in Pyeongyang is very much under wraps, but what we do know is that he visited the Geumsusan Palace of the Sun this afternoon and that he'll visit the 'Friendship Monument' tomorrow. Significance of the visits?
14. The upcoming G20 summit in Japan next week will bring together world leaders. Do you expect any progress in resolving North Korea's nuclear deadlock?
15. Xi Jinping's wife Peng Liyuan reportedly accompanied Xi on this visit to North Korea. Anything we should know about her trip to Pyeongyang?
