Geylang Serai Info:
Geylang (Chinese: 芽笼, Tamil: கேலாங்) is a planning area and township located on the eastern fringe of the Central Region of Singapore, bordering Hougang and Toa Payoh in the north, Marine Parade in the south, Bedok in the east, and Kallang in the west.
Geylang is known perhaps most infamously as a red-light district, particularly the areas along Geylang Road. Geylang is also where one of Singapore's oldest Malay settlements, Geylang Serai, is located.
The word Geylang is found early in Singapore's history and also in early topographical maps showing marsh and coconut plantations beside and adjacent to the mouth of the Kallang River, home to the Orang Laut (sea gypsies). One possible etymological link in the stock vocabulary of the Malay is geylanggan meaning to twist or crush a reference to the process of extracting the coconut meat and milk used by the locals to thicken curries in Malay-Chinese (Peranakan) cuisine. The word Geylang may be derived from a corrupted spelling of the Malay word gelang which is a type of edible creeper (Portulaca oleracea). This is a more plausible explanation for the name because Malays typically name places based on the abundance of certain plant species (e.g. Melaka after the tree species of the same name) or geological formations (e.g. Bukit Gombak based on the comb-like hill summit).

The Malay Wet Market of Geylang Serai. Singapore Street Food
Geylang Serai Market is one of the biggest and busiest wet markets in Singapore. Since 1964, this market has been a focal point for the local Malay community, with a good selection of Malay and Indian-Muslim specialties on offer.
Reopened in 2010, the new Geylang Serai Market has become brighter and cleaner but the atmosphere of the old traditional market is still maintained.
After renovation, this market is dressed in a cultural suit - a traditional Malay kampong house. Either on weekday or weekend, it is always vibrant. Especially, middle-aged shoppers come here to do their daily shopping, plus flocks of young people come for good foods at weekends.
This market is a source of ingredients for Malay Singaporeans to prepare traditional dishes and supplies all sorts of Malay spices and a variety of Middle Eastern ones as well. Pork is not on offer at this market. Prices here are among the lowest in Singapore, especially fish prices
The second floor of Geylang Serai Market is home to hundreds of food stalls with main focus on Malay and Indian cuisine. This is the best food court to enjoy Malay dishes such as asam pedas stingray (spicy stingray), beef rendang (spicy beef), ikan terubok (fried fish) and goreng pisang (banana fritters).
Nearest MRT station: Eunos MRT (EW7) (Walking 8 mins from Exit B)

Spanning the five lanes of Sims Avenue at the junction of Engku Aman Road, the 12m-high display gives an instant fillip to the joy of Hari Raya festivities.

Excellent Nasi Padang at Geylang Serai Market Food Centre
Geylang Serai market and food centre is a great place to eat Nasi Padang and other Malay and Indonesian foods in Singapore. Get more details here:
Geylang Serai is a wet market and food hawker center that’s known in Singapore for having a high concentration of Malay and Indonesian food available, and I think most of the stalls are halal. You’ll find all sorts of different things to eat at the food court area, including biryani, a number of nasi Padang curry stalls, and many other dishes. I came to the hawker center specifically for the Nasi Padang, and I wanted to try a place called Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang.
Luckily when I arrived, the line to eat at Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang, wasn’t too long, so I jumped in line and I was soon ordering my plate of Nasi Padang. A meal of nasi Padang is originally from Padang in Sumatra, but since Singapore is so geographically close to Sumatra, the dishes from Padang area very popular and there are many Sumatrans living in Singapore. Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang is known for serving some of the finest Nasi Padang in the city, and so I was happy to eat there.
Before digging into my rice and curry, I started off with some satays from Alhambra satay. Unfortunately, the satays were way too sweet for me and sort of dried out.
But luckily, the Nasi Padang made up for the satays. I got some jackfruit curry, chili eggplant, and the main dish, beef rendang, a famous variety of curry made with coconut and lots of fragrant spices. Along with a variety of different sambal chili sauces, it was an incredibly plate of curry and rice, Padang style.
If you’re looking for excellent Indonesian food and Malay food in Singapore, Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre is a great place to be.
Address: #02-137, Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre
Open hours: 9 am – 10:30 pm daily, but closed two weeks on Monday and Thursday
Prices: It depends on how many dishes you take, but my plate was $7 SGD
How to get there: Take the MRT to Paya Lebar, and the food centre is just a 10 minute walk from there.

Geylang Ramadan Bazaar 2019 | Singapore Halal Food
Geylang Ramadan Bazaar 2019 | Singapore Halal Food
Geylang Ramadan Bazaar is back and Small City Island was there for the Singapore Halal Food series. It is 2019 and that time of the year when Geylang Serai is transformed into one big Singapore Street Food fiesta.
Our trip down for Singapore Halal Food series was welcomed with amazing food aroma, great flashing lights and delicious looking food.
We immediately got to work and ended up having food from 7 different stalls.
At Wisma Geylang Serai:
01. BURP Stall G359
02. BeefBro Stall G306
03. XL Takoyaki G320
04. Thai Milk Tea by Japanese Takoyaki WGS351
At Tanjong Katong Complex (CONTAINER)
01. BURGS Stall 013
02. WORD Stall 042
03. Pebbles.Inc Stall 017
This year, the Geylang Ramadan Bazaar 2019 was much more organised. The food stalls were all concentrated in 2 main areas and not scattered around. There are ample seating space for the bazaar goer to sit down and enjoy their food.
Also, the walk ways are much much wider and this will definitely take away the traditional congestion of human traffic at the Geylang Ramadan Bazaar.
Thank you for watching.
