Grey Heron rehabilitation, Ghadira Nature Reserve, Malta
Every autumn hundreds of protected birds are illegally shot as they pass Malta on their migration to Africa from their European breeding grounds. Most are killed instantly but many sustain injuries which would prevent them from surviving in the wild without rehabilitation.
This Grey Heron suffered a fractured wing as a result of the impact of lead shot fired from a shotgun. For birds that rely on flight to catch prey this kind of injury would be fatal, but Grey Herons catch fish while wading in shallow water and so can survive without the use of a wing.
Ghadira Nature Reserve, managed by BirdLife Malta, contains the ideal habitat of lakes, islands and reed-beds for a Grey Heron to live in while recovering from an injury of this kind. Although this bird will probably never be able to fly, thanks to the protection provided by the reserve it will be able to live a normal life in it natural habitat.

A day at Għadira Nature Reserve
Leaves change from green to vibrant yellows, oranges and reds, and then fall from the trees. Ripe, fleshy fruits cling to shrubs and trees. Migrating birds arrive to feed on the fruits, then disappear again on their southward journey, and the summer’s rife insect life largely fades away. Autumn is upon us!
After the long dry summer we have now stated a new season and day after day, our Għadira Nature Reserve - which like Simar has now reopened to the public after the summer break - has started to gear up for the cold winter months.
Here is some recent footage taken at Għadira which shows different bird species at the reserve including the rehabilitated juvenile Greater Flamingo which is still roaming around the reserve waiting for the right moment to continue on its journey!
