Nepal Mustang Trek - Part 5 - Lo Manthang
Coming to Lo Manthang, city tour arround this ancient kingdom of Mustang and walled city.
Why, How and When about Upper Mustang
This is the ultimate guide to the forbidden kingdom of Upper Mustang. This place was a restricted zone up until 1990. Only a few foreigners had seen the forbidden kingdom and they brought news from this place disconnected from the rest of the world.
The tibetan lifestyle combined with the landscape are the major attraction to be seen here. The lifestyle because it is not much changed froma century ago. And the barren landscape because of extremely low amount amount of rain due to rain shadow region.
Besides these attraction, you can also find one of the oldest Buddhist gompa, Ghar gompa, in this region. It has been standing there for more than 1200 years. And then there is Luri gompa that has seen life for more than 700 years. If you have already planned to visit these places then do not miss the amazing Tashi Kabum at all cost. It is just an hour away from Luri gompa.
Mustang is also extremely famous for its caves. Researchers debate on how did the ancient people get into these caves because they are carved more than 100m from the ground. And that is just where it starts. Some are even higher than 500m. National geography recently did a survey in one of these caves and found them to be ancient burial sites from where mummies were retrieved.
Well, if this is not enough then you can also find ammonite fossils in these places. These stones carry the life from a tens of thousands of years ago.
This is a video covering the Why? How? and When? about Upper Mustang.

Awesome and full off-road motorbike ride from Jomsom to Old Kagbeni. The road were icy and bike were very slippery. So, we had to be very careful while riding. Then the road from Kagbeni to Muktinath Temple was really amazing, really beautiful, mountain view, clear sky and black top road. Bikers dreamland. Felt blessed in Muktinath Temple and then short walk to Dholamebar Gompa, was really peaceful. Then again off-road ride to Kagbeni and back to Jomsom. Next day, we started our journey from Jomsom to Dhumba Lake, it was again off-road but very beautiful and scenic. Then Dhumba lake view was amazing, calm and peaceful. From Dhumba lake to Marpha, it was amazing off-road and also we needed to cross old suspension bridge which was quite scary. We finally reached Marpha, the landscape is so different and beautiful and the view from monastery was mind blowing. After that, we went back to Tatopani. But this time the road was under construction. So, the traffic diverted us to new way which was no road at all. It was river road and we needed to cross really big and scary rivers. This is my once in a lifetime experience.

Crocodile chomps trainers head as stunt goes awry
These remarkable photos give a glimpse into the closely-guarded tradition of Tibetan sky burials, where bodies are chopped up and fed to the vultures. Sky burials are a funerary practice in the Chinese provinces of Tibet, Qinghai, and Inner Mongolia and in Mongolia. The majority of Tibetans and many Mongolians adhere to Vajrayana Buddhism, which teaches the transmigration of spirits. This means they do not see a need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel, so they dispose of it through a sky burial
Sky Burial: Tibetan Burial Ritual
Sky Burial follows the ritual of jha-tor, the giving of alms to birds in a northern Tibetan monastery - where the bodies of the dead are offered to the vultures as a final act of kindness to living beings.
At the Drigung Monastery lamas chant to call the consciousness from the body. Juniper incense is burned to summon the vultures. Special body breakers, or rogyapas, unwrap the bodies and cut away the flesh. The bones are crushed and mixed with tsampa, roasted barley flour. The entire body is consumed by the birds, assuring the ascent of the soul.
The sky, or the universe, is where the sacred world lies. To merge with the sky after death is a holy event, one that replaces the sufferings of this world with peace.

10. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin), Ze Wang Ji Mei, Tibetan monk:
This (mass cremation) is very special, as there are too many bodies of the earthquake victims and we can''t have sky burials (exposure to carrion-feeding birds) for all of them at the same time. There are not enough vultures for all these bodies, so the bodies will become very dirty and it is not good for the souls to rest in peace. Therefore, we think the mass cremation is the best funeral for all these earthquake victims.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of victims of an earthquake that struck western China on Wednesday were cremated on Saturday as the community broke with tradition because of the large numbers of dead bodies.
About 1,000 monks chanted Buddhist prayers as the bodies were set on fire in deep trenches, fuelled with precious ceremonial butter oil and the wreckage of houses they had once inhabited.
And as the smoke rose from the funeral pyres, into skies where vultures circled, rescue workers searched through rubble in this remote western region, trying to find any remaining survivors, with officials saying the death toll had climbed to 1,144.
The quakes struck an ethnic Tibetan area, where ''sky burial'' is the custom. The corpse is cut into pieces and left on a platform to be devoured by vultures but the numbers involved forced a change from tradition.
There are not enough vultures for all these bodies, so the bodies will become very dirty and it is not good for the souls to rest in peace, said Ze Wang Ji Mei, a Buddhist monk.
At Jiegu monastery, the bodies were prepared for cremation, carefully wrapped in colourful blankets and piled three or four deep on a platform, then covered with timber to keep the fires burning.
Monks at the cremation were not able to give an exact number of bodies burned.
Relief goods continued to arrive, having come along the single main road from the Qinghai provincial capital, 12 hours away and police said they had increased security at areas were relief supplies were being handed out.
The local police chief said the biggest challenge was still getting enough clean drinking water and food for estimated 100,000 people affected by earthquake.
Residents of the largely Tibetan town say it was the monks who were first to help when disaster struck on Wednesday, pulling people from the rubble and passing out their own limited supplies.
Yushu county, the area hit by the quakes, is overwhelmingly Tibetan, 93 percent by official statistics but it largely escaped the unrest that swept the Tibetan plateau in 2008.
