GHEE HIANG - a heritage brand that originates from China (in the late Qing Dynasty era), founded in 1856 (one of the oldest brand in Penang/Malaysia). Over 160 years, through the migration of the Chinese into Malaya, during the boom of the rubber and tin industry. It prides itself on being the custodian of centuries-old recipes from Fujian, China – sesame oil, pastries and coffee.
With a passion for perfection & Hand Made, heart Baked principle, Ghee Hiang's traditional pastries are freshly handmade & baked each day. Hence, making it such an authentic delicacy and favourite for all.

GHEE HIANG Established since 1856 in Penang, a Heritage & part of History
Ghee Hiang is a name synonymous with Penang. In 1856 a pastry chef from Fujian province came to Penang with many of his fellow Fujianese to Penang to earn a better living. He made Fujian-styled pastry. Over the years its products became more & more known as their taste became acquired by folks from Penang & later by the Chinese peoples from all over the country & many parts of the Chinese diapora besides China in recent years when tourists from China arrived in large groups to Singapore, Thailand & Malaysia.
At present Ghee Hiang has two outlets one at Beach Street (Lebuh Pantai) in downtown Georgetown & the other at Macalister Road.
Ghee Hiang is famous for its tau sar pneah (reb bean paste biscuit), beh teh sor (almond cookie), hneoh pneah (fragrant biscuit) & sesame seed oil. When yours truly visited the Macalister outlet on Sunday Feb. 26 2012 many of their products were sold out. The sales people informed us that in the previous day many tourists from Hong Kong stormed down from their tour buses in hordes & hungrily grabbed many of the popular cookies & biscuits.

It started with the tin mining and rubber industries boom in the then Malaya back in 1856 when there was also an influx of Chinese immigrants from Southern China. It was during this period too that Ghee Hiang, which saw its origins from Fujian, China, was established with the arrival of a Fujian pastry chef to Penang’s shores. The chef, invited by Ghee Hiang’s founder, introduced Ghee Hiang traditional pastries in Penang and by the 1900s, the Ghee Hiang Baby Brand Pure Sesame Oil was introduced.
Both these product lines were carefully crafted with age-old proven traditional methods and techniques from Fujian, China, thus producing an end result of superb quality and incomparable flavours. Even as Ghee Hiang becomes an integral part of Penang and a reminder of Malaysia’s colourful heritage and rich traditions, it continues to improve its products and techniques.
The Ghee Hiang Baby Brand Sesame Oil, made from continuous refinement and quality seeds selection, has today become a trusted brand not only for households but also for commercial uses from food industries, restaurants to hotels.

Ming Xiang Tai pastry shop was founded in Penang. To honour the parent of the founder during their time of hard work in selling pastries by using a trishaw cart, the founder named his egg tarts as the Trishaw Egg Tart”.
Ming Xiang Tai emphasizes on quality and not the volume. Pastry industry is different with other food industry. Baking skills is very important. Ming Xiang Tai's pastries are to reach a certain high level of quality only be sold in the market.
