City Center Walk in Ghent - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
After we have parked the car in the garage reserved for us, we start our first city walk through the center of Ghent. We are in front of the Sint Michielskerk (Saint Michael's Church), built in the 15th century. The construction work was interrupted during the Huguenot Wars. The tower was not completed later due to a lack of money.
Inside there are paintings by Anthonis van Dyck, Gaspar de Crayer, and other famous painters. As festivities take place, we do not want to disturb anymore.
Now the Sint Michielsbrug (St Michael’s Bridge) lies in front of us. We now get the first idea of why Ghent is also called the Manhattan of the Middle Ages.
Behind the bridge rise the towers of the Sint-Niklaaskerk, the Belfry, and the St. Bavo Cathedral.
To the left, along the Leie, is the Hotel 1898 The Post and next to it the Gildenhuis van de Vrije Schippers. The free skippers acquired the building in 1530, before which it was the guild house of the millers' guild. Today it serves to represent the port of Ghent.
In the past, the shore of the Leie served here as an inland port. Today both the right bank Graslei and the opposite bank Korenlei with their listed houses and a multitude of café terraces are a popular meeting place for locals and tourists.
To the south, we discover a graffiti on the wall of a house, depicting the famous Ghent Altarpiece in St. Bavo's Cathedral.
Passing the Hotel 1898 The Post we reach the Korenmarkt, the main square of Ghent.
We take a look around and try to let the architecture of the individual buildings affect us. Next to the Sint-Niklaaskerk, we discover the Stadshal, the City Pavilion. Due to its unorthodox shape, we want to take a closer look at the hall later.
While we walk in the northern direction, a bus passes by, and we notice that it is a free electric bus for locals and tourists here in Ghent. The turquoise buses are easy to recognize.

Ghent in Motion (2018), hidden pearl of Flanders, Belgium. (4,5') 4K AERIAL DRONE MOVIE
Do you remember ‘Ghent in Motion’? In this film project in 2013, we were the pioneers of capturing Ghent from the air, using drones. Today, five years later, both the city and the audiovisual techniques have evolved to such an extent that a sequel was required.
Just like 'Ghent in Motion', 'Ghent from the Sky' again pushes the boundaries to an upper level. Better cameras and lenses allowed us to make breathtaking, sharp and even more profound images of our beautiful city of Ghent.
In the summer of 2017, our cameras flew over the city for twenty days. In the devoted and seamlessly edited result, the medieval city center and the Ghentian architecture play the leading role.
With this film, a digital postcard in the year 2018, which is part of the documentary 'Ghentian', we want you to enjoy our beautiful city in all its glory.

Walking in GHENT / Belgium ????????
The city of Ghent in Belgium is one of the prettiest cities of the country, sometimes refered as the Gem of Belgium. With its central location in Flanders it is a short train ride away from Brussels or Brugges making it an easy day trip.
We start this afternoon walk at the Ghent City Hall from where we explore the inner city. The water channels around the old town carry touists boats. We walk to the Gravensteen, the 10th-century moated castle. We walk all around the tourist area, go to the Leie river channels for a view of the fairy tale cityscape with the 15th and 16th century architecture. We also quickly check the Saint Nicholas' Church inside on our way back to the starting point.
Note: The video was uploaded as 4K60 yet only shows up on YouTube at 1080p60 max. I messages YouTube support and will see if it gets fix that at some point.

Ghent City Center in Ghent, Belgium
Ghent may not be the first city that comes to mind when you think about traveling to Europe, and that may be one of the top reasons to go. Without the mass of tourists that can overwhelm some gorgeous cities, Ghent, Belgium, is a place where you can see the sights, wander the streets, and hang out with the locals without competing for space or being turned off by tourist touts.
Traveling to Ghent almost feels like discovering a secret. Its stunning Gothic buildings are mixed in with street art, waterfront cafes, and even a castle. There are enough fun things to do in Ghent to occupy a whole weekend, if not longer. This beautiful city is one of our favorite recent discoveries, and we can’t stop singing its praises.
THINGS TO DO IN GHENT
For the best view in Ghent, head up the belfry (belfort). It’s not often in Europe that you find a 14th-century bell tower where you can take an elevator instead of trudging up 300+ stairs. When that happens, take advantage of it.
The 300-foot-high Belfry of Ghent is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the top things to see when you visit Ghent. Finished in 1380, it was the primary watchtower for the medieval city, and its carillon announced the time and gave warnings.
On the way up, there’s an exhibit about the belfry’s famous dragon weathervane, which has guarded the site since the tower was built. There are two previous incarnations of him in various states of completeness. You’ll also see a the giant bell called “Roland” and a huge rotating drum that looks like the inner workings of a music box, which is responsible for the music of the carillon. But the real attraction is the view. It’s one of my favorite places in Ghent.
The belfry is the middle of Ghent’s three towers, so it provides a great view of St. Nicholas Church and the old center of Ghent on one side and St. Bavo on the other. If you’re interested in getting a nice photo of St. Nicholas as in our photo above, arrive mid-morning when the sun will be behind you (and hopefully not casting too many shadows).
Visit the Castle of the Counts
One of the top Ghent attractions is right in the city center. The 12th-century Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen) is impossible to miss. With a moat and turrets, the imposing structure looms over the Lys River.
From 1180 until 1353, the castle was the residence of the Counts of Flanders and heavily intertwined in the political happenings of Ghent. It was built by Count Philip of Alsace on the site of an earlier fortification. With its battlements and arms, it was meant to show his strength in the face of frequent challenges from Ghent’s upper class.
After the Counts left, the castle in Ghent was used as a court and a prison and ultimately became a cotton mill, gradually falling into disrepair. After an extensive restoration, the Castle of the Counts sports a unique collection of torture equipment and the odd suit of armor, though furnishings are generally sparse.
A 45-minute audio guide provides a little bit more context to the rooms and the castle’s story but is much more entertainment than historical information (it’s voiced by a Belgian comedian). The gatehouse, ramparts, keep, and stables are open to visitors. Like the belfry, the Castle of the Counts provides spectacular views from the top.
Sample the Holy Food Market
First a church and then a library, the 16th-century Baudelo Chapel is now one of the coolest places to eat in Ghent. When we read that it was inspired by some of our favorite food halls in Rotterdam and the markets of Copenhagen, we knew we would love it before we even set foot inside.
The vaulted ceilings and bright windows where the stained glass used to be leave no doubt about the original purpose of the Holy Food Market space. But now there’s a bar right in the center. And somehow it all works perfectly in this temple of gastronomy.
There is a wide variety for food to choose from. About a dozen stalls offer cuisine from all over the world. You can opt for sushi from Komatsu, Italian specialties from L’Arrosticino, or Portuguese tapas from Taberna Lisboa. There is also seafood, Indian, and several vegan options, too. If ice cream is your passion, stop by the Magnum Pleasure Store to customize your own creation.

From the Train Station to the Center in Ghent - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
On a Sunday, we use the opportunity to take the tram to Gent-Sint-Pieters station. It is the first Sunday of the month, the shops are open for business, and the public transport in Ghent is free! An exemplary service!
The tram stop is under the modern buildings which are also part of the station. Only a few steps away is the historic train station, built for the world exhibition in 1913. The entrance hall impresses by its pretty mosaics.
In front of the station is a small park around a monument. The square was named Queen Maria Hendrikaplein after the queen of the same name. The square houses as well a bicycle parking, many German cities could be proud of something like this. An organic market is currently taking place at the square.
We return to Bagattenstraat and pass the cultural center Vooruit. It is the heart of cultural life in Ghent and houses a theater too.
Just around the corner in the Lammerstraat, we arrive at a modern dark building, called De Krook. We are in the middle of the cultural life of the city. The architecturally notable building is a library and a meeting place for those interested in culture and innovation.
The Woodrow Wilsonplein, a mighty square, is lined with shopping centers and various cultural buildings. We lose orientation a bit and land at the Sint-Annakerk and turn into the Brabantdam.
On the way, we suddenly come across a small covered pedestrian passage, the Glass Alley. In the first moment, we consider it to be a shopping mall, but it quickly turns out to be a red-light district.
From Lieven Bauwensplein, we have a beautiful view of the castle complex of Kasteel Geeraard de Duivelsteen. Due to his dark skin, the original owner Count Geeraad Vilain had the name Geeraard the Devil.
But we turn back and go to the flower market at the Kouter. Since it is Sunday and thus market day, there are also a lot of beautiful plants to admire and buy.
Opposite the opera of Gent, we stop briefly at the Tea-Room Rigoletto and have a snack.

Ghent is a city of about 250K people, located in the Flemish region of Belgium about an hour's drive or train ride from the capital of Brussels. On a recent trip there where I was invited to speak at a local college, I was struck with the beauty of the city so I decided to take some time out to put together this travel review of the city which I believe is a hidden gem of Belgium.
