Town Hall of Ghent, Flanders
The Town Hall of Ghent is located just a few hundred meters north of the Belfry. While a potentially attractive gothic style monument, it is in dire need of an overhaul, mainly to scrape of the grime of the exterior.
Gand (Ghent) 1980 archive footage
Found footage shot by a French filmmaker while touring Belgium in 1980.
It contains stock footage of Gand (Ghent), a city in the Flemish Region: the Town Hall (Stadhuis), Statue of the Van Eyck Brothers, Castle of Gerald the Devil, Saint Bavo's Cathedral, Gravensteen castle, Post Office Building, and more.

Belgium, a country in Western Europe, is known for medieval towns, Renaissance architecture and as headquarters of the European Union and NATO. The country has distinctive regions including Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and a German-speaking community to the east. The bilingual capital, Brussels, has ornate guildhalls at Grand-Place and elegant art-nouveau buildings. (wikipedia)
The City of Brussels is the largest municipality and historical centre of the Brussels-Capital Region, and the capital of Belgium. Besides the strict centre, it also covers the immediate northern outskirts where it borders municipalities in Flanders. (wikipedia)
Bruges, the capital of West Flanders in northwest Belgium, is distinguished by its canals, cobbled streets and medieval buildings. Its port, Zeebrugge, is an important center for fishing and European trade. In the city center’s Burg square, the 14th-century Stadhuis (City Hall) has an ornate carved ceiling. Nearby, Markt square features a 13th-century belfry with a 47-bell carillon and 83m tower with panoramic views. (wikipedia)
Ghent is a port city in northwest Belgium, at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. During the Middle Ages it was a prominent city-state. Today it’s a university town and cultural hub. Its pedestrianized center is known for medieval architecture such as 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbor. (wikipedia)

Dit noemt men historiserende vormgeving.

Eclecticism is a nineteenth and twentieth-century architectural style in which a single piece of work incorporates a mixture of elements from previous historical styles to create something that is new and original. Recently I have visit an impressive building located in the Belgian city of Ghent near the Belfry, St. James' Church and the Town Hall, which was built in 1903 by the Ghent master builder Jacob Gustaaf Semey. Besides scenes in the form of busts and reliefs about the life of Jacob van Artevelde, who played an important role in the development of Ghent and Flanders during the late Middle Ages, a number of stylistic features also appeal to me very deeply. Have you also seen the neo-gothic font?

From our 2016 trip to Europe.
Built in 1180, the Gravensteen was the castle of the Counts of Flanders, complete with courtyard, keep, dungeon, towers, and ramparts. One room contains actual instruments of torture and punishment (not just replicas) including a guillotine last used in 1861.
A pair of fine gabled 17th c. buildings have interesting bas reliefs on their façades. The red building has images symbolizing the 5 senses: taste (monkey), sight (eagle), hearing (deer), smell (dog), and touch (human, since we have no hair covering our hands). The panels on the other façade depict the Christian works of mercy: to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to shelter the stranger, to care for the sick, and to visit those in prison (Matthew 25:31-46).
Ghent combats illegal graffiti in other parts of town by letting artists go wild on one narrow street, now nicknamed “Graffitistraat.”
The Belfort (belltower) was constructed in the 14th c. while the Stadhuis (city hall) dates to the 16th c.
Sint Niklaaskerk (St Nicholas Church) was built mostly in the 13th c. It’s a textbook example of the Scheldt-Gothic style unique to this part of Belgium (the Schelde River region) with blue-grey stone construction, turrets, and a single tower in the center as opposed to twin towers on the façade. It faces out onto the Korenmarkt, one of Ghent’s several market squares, ringed with medieval and Neo-Gothic architecture. We had lunch here at a McDonalds with one of the best views of any fast food joint.
The 15th c. Sint Michielskerk (St Michael’s Church) overlooks one of Ghent’s canals which itself is lined with beautiful historic buildings. Standing beside a smaller canal is the Butcher’s Hall with a wooden vaulted roof reflecting the architect’s shipbuilding expertise.
Bordering Sint Baafsplein (St Bavo’s Square) is the cloth guild hall, and towering above it, the Belfort which we saw earlier. On the opposite side of the square is Sint Baafskathedraal (St Bavo’s Cathedral) which dates to 942 although today’s structure is mostly from the 14th - 16th c. The church was named for a 7th c. Ghent nobleman who gave up his worldly possessions to help the poor and then lived for a while as a hermit monk before founding a monastery here. The elaborately carved pulpit from the 1740’s represents the tree of life, with two hardworking cupids on top struggling to raise the cross. The marble statues beneath the pulpit proclaim the counter-Reformation message that it’s time to re-awaken the old Catholic faith, as a woman representing “faith” wakes up the old man representing “time.” A pair of angels offer a lesson in appropriate worship, with the one on the left paying careful attention to the sermon while the one on the right admonishes the congregation to do the same as he points to the pulpit. Up above, a golden serpent (Satan) is entwined around the tree while a pudgy, winged baby tries to pry the ominous apple from his mouth. The crypt offers a glimpse at the Romanesque foundations with some faint 15th c. frescoes that were whitewashed by Calvinists and rediscovered in the 1930s. St Bavo’s act of contrition is celebrated by Rubens in a large canvas in the transept. But the cathedral’s greatest treasure (probably Ghent’s greatest treasure) is Van Eyck’s colossal 1432 altarpiece, rich in both detail and symbolism. It is one of the masterpieces taken by the Nazis and rescued by the Monuments Men near the end of WW2. After viewing it at the cathedral, we saw one of its panels being restored at the Fine Arts Museum, which also contains masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, and one of my all time favorite paintings by Hieronymus Bosch.
The video ends with a series of still photos from our time in Ghent.
