VARZANEH VILLAGE/ IRAN
Varzaneh is an ancient central Iranian desert town in Isfahan province, 1.5 hour away from Isfahan city by bus, still showing evidence of its 5000 year old civilization.
Gav Chah (Cow well) گاو چاه
People in the dry regions of Iran including central and eastern parts have been struggling with many difficulties supplying water for their needs such as agricultural, farming or even drinking. During centuries people came up with ideas and innovations to tackle their problem.
People living in the historical town of Varzaneh also used to have their own innovation dealing with the shortage of water. “Cattle wells” is the idea they came up with. Pulling litters of water from a deep well under the burning sunshine of the desert seems to be very arduous, as a result, people created an innovative mechanism consisting of 33 pieces and used a special specie of cow famous of “Sistani” ( A kind of cow common in a province in the south east of Iran ) to power this mechanism.
Cows were trained and fed just for this purpose. After the innovation of electrical engines the application of this mechanism gradually faded into now just an almost forgotten tradition of the people of this ancient town. A villager living in this ancient town resurrected his ancestors tradition by collecting all the pieces needed and training a cow which he himself bought in Sistan.
What is interesting about this Gav Chah is that the cow starts working when his owner starts singing. The Gav Chah (Cow well) For sure with the electrical engines available widely, seems NOT to be a proper solution for the people anymore. However, it has become a nationwide tourism attraction of the town and of course for the tourists visiting the town. Google the phrase “گاو چاه” for more images and videos.

WE GOT STUCK IN THE VARZANEH DESERT IN IRAN!!!
In 2017 we spent a month backpacking around Iran independently. We had zero plans, no itinerary and had done very little research. So when a backpacker recommended we visit the Varzaneh Desert, we jumped at the idea.
This desert is one of the most beautiful in Iran, and during our time exploring it we found some truly stunning places. From the old mud-brick Ghoortan Citadel to sprawling salt flats, right up to watching sunset from the top of an enormous sand dune, each spot blew us away.
Of course not everything goes to plan when you travel, and for a little while it looked like we'd be staying out in the Varzaneh Desert when the vehicles got stuck in the sand.
Iran was one of the most beautiful nations we've visited, with the friendliest and most hospitable people, and we can't wait to go back.

PS : Trump, vraiment tu sers à rien.
