The mountain goats would see the ships approaching and it would startle them and they'd come down the mountain. That would alert the townspeople that invaders were on the way. So go sit on Silkys great patio, feed the goats, listen to dueling pianos or live entertainment, and try out his world-famous barbecue!

Ghost River - New Year's Day 2010
Fast moving streams like the Nantahala and the Ocoee are what I call adrenaline rivers, while the Wolf is an endorphin river. It offers canoeists a priceless glimpse of what most other rivers' headwaters in this region looked like before they were channelized.
William Faulkner described such swampy, untamed rivers as the thick, slow, black, unsunned streams almost without current, which once each year ceased to flow at all and then reversed, spreading, drowning the rich land and subsiding again, leaving it still richer. [The Bear, from Go Down Moses]
The best canoeing on the Wolf is the Ghost River section between LaGrange and Moscow, Tennessee.
Once an impassable, swampy Ghost River, now a paddler's dream, these headwaters offer visitors a museum-like exhibit of different habitats: bottomland hardwood forest, sawgrass filling the shallow portions of the channel. Then the Wolf River vanishes into a disorienting, canoe-swallowing swamp and a deep-water lake. - Richard Banks, Backpacker Magazine, 1995.
PHOTOS:
At this point in the trek from the Yager Rd. bridge (becomes Main Street in La Grange, TN) to the Bateman Rd. bridge, small braids of the Wolf River begin to split off the main channel, disappearing into a dense, standing-water Cypress-Tupelo Gum swamp just before the river abruptly hits a dead end. Only one among the dozens of narrow, twisting corridors splitting off to the left of your canoe will lead you through the full mile of swamp. The rest dissolve into a forest of impassable knees and floating islands of Itea and Buttonbush.
The river seems to be everywhere, but nowhere - like a disorienting funhouse hall of mirrors. For about a 60-90-minute stretch of the trip, the paddler cannot see dry land anywhere.
In 1995 this river section was saved from timber auction by a coordinated effort of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, local conservation activists Lucius Burch and W.S. Babe Howard, and the Wolf River Conservancy.
In 1997 the Wolf River was designated an American Heritage River by presidential proclamation under a special United States Environmental Protection Agency program.
Various sections of the river's headwaters remain under the threat of degradation from poorly planned development and non-sustainable forestry practices.
Wolf River Conservancy: wolfriver.org
P.S. The night after my first float through the Ghost River section, in 1992, I had a weird dream. No plot to it really, just an image of the water slowly flowing in the darkness, beneath the canopy of trees and dense shrub and rotten logs, while I lay safe in my Midtown Memphis home. I remember feeling strangely guilty that I wasn't still out there with the current, but also relieved to no longer be in that stygian gloom. I've since come to love that gloom, and all the surrounding light that defines it. -Gb

Episode 213 Exploring Underground - Tennessee Uncharted
This week on Tennessee Uncharted, Erick travels back to Sparta to scratch below the surface and see some of the sites he missed back in Season 1. To kick off his visit, Erick dives down deep with TWRA, doing his part to document the effects of a disease decimating the native bat population.
After climbing into the Cumberland Plateau cave system, Erick and the crew (that’s right, the entire crew and their gear) connect with the Cumberland Caverns where they set off on a serious spelunking adventure. The caverns offer a wide range of trips to treat even the tamest tourist to truly spectacular scenery, but only a few hundred folks each year dare to embark on this particular challenge. It’s an adventure the crew will never forget. Always considering the significance of sound, Erick catches up with the crew of Bluegrass Underground and learns how their vision for a venue cast the “cave as a co-star” in their critically acclaimed concert series.
Feeling motivated, Erick makes moves for another musky, this time stepping out on a stand-up paddleboard with fellow fishing fanatic Jase from Jackson Kayak. While the fishing was a flop, the float had Erick feeling famished. Luckily, a few handfuls of Hot Rod Popcorn’s Burnout Cheddar cheers the crew right up (especially when chased by some Calfkiller Brewing Company craft brews!). Finally, before throwing their bags back in the van, Erick and the crew learn to throw pottery instead, taking notes from a local artisan and everyday magic-maker, Thor of The Fragrant Mushroom.
Grab your headlamp and head out with Erick and the crew on this jam-packed journey back to Sparta, Tennessee.

Pickle TV - Flipside Memphis
Pickle TV
When the first Indie Memphis Film Festival was held in 1998, there were nine short films. Five of them were by John Pickle. The actor and filmmaker was, by that time, already a local legend for Pickle TV, a cable-access television show that harkened back to classic counterculture television comedy such as Monty Python's Flying Circus and SCTV. Pickle and his band of merry pranksters created bona fide screen anarchy. Sometimes it would be tightly produced, high-concept sketch comedy filled with strange and surreal characters, most of whom were created by Pickle himself. Other times, they would simply destroy a car with sledgehammers and firearms for your viewing pleasure.
Pickle has since become known as Memphis' Peter Sellers, the go-to character actor who can do any accent and get a laugh with any material. He starred in the 2006 film The Importance of Being Russell as the titular mad redneck genius whose garage invention threatens the very fabric of space-time. But who better to introduce the legend that is John Pickle than John Pickle himself?

LYRICS:
Verse One:
If I could wipe away the pain, I would
If I could throw it all away, I would
I'd be the voice of sunlight on a midnight train
I'd bend over backwards to push away the pain
Pre-chorus:
Inside the madness, we fight
Inside the madness, we rise
Chorus:
When the angels open their eyes
How their hearts break to realize
All of the mistakes we've made, at what price?
Wheres our superhero tonight?
Verse Two:
If I could free you from this burden, I would
If I could make you feel deserving of everything good
I'd be the voice of passion in a world so cold
Id bend over backwards to change this mould
Pre-chorus
Inside the madness, we fight
Inside the madness, we rise
Chorus
When the angels open their eyes
How their hearts break to realize
All of the mistakes we've made, at what price?
Wheres our superhero tonight?
Bridge:
If I could free you from this pain
I would hold on so tightly
If I could be your superhero
Chorus:

Wheres our superhero tonight?
ABOUT EMMA G:
Finding her voice as she rediscovers her American heritage from her home base in Washington DC, New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Emma G is a combination of Adele, Pink, Amy Winehouse, and Alanis Morrissette. Her edgy tones and gutsy lyrics hammer home her messages of love, vulnerability, empowerment and strength with a soul-pop/rock sound that is engaging, inspiring and appealing to a hugely diverse audience.
Unapologetically outspoken, flying her freak flag, and always smiling, Washingtonian Magazine dubbed Emma G as one of the “Best of DC”. One Love Massive describes her as “charismatic”, and ANR Factory describes her voice as poignant and beautiful” with “astounding bravery to speak up” on issues that matter to her.
And where did this bravery come from? A long history of health issues, brain surgeries, battles with depression and suicide, drug addiction, and sexual assault, yet still finding the inner strength to come out the other side positively: singing her truth. “Things that happen to us don’t make us who we are, but we all need to overcome struggles. The trick is to overcome them together.” Says Emma G. “My hope is that my music will not only resonate with individual people, but also ignite those flames of love, resilience and community”.

Ep. 504 Memphis Grit, Grind, and Games - Tennessee Valley Uncharted
On this episode of Tennessee Valley Uncharted, Erick is making moves to understand what it means to be a Memphian. He starts his journey with a little serenity care of Sunrise Yoga at The Dixon, joined by local blogger, Michaela Dockery. After working up a sweat, they head to nearby City Silo for some heartwarming conversation about conquering challenges. Next, Erick gets into the booth with seminal sportswriter Geoff Calkins, before heading to Hog & Hominy to dig into some conversation about how the gumption of the Grizzlies is emblematic of the city they call home. Next, Erick and Michaela cruise through the Crosstown Concourse to see how the residents have polished a piece of history and made a home for arts, food, shopping and more in the process. A quick trip to the FedEx Forum allows Erick to followup on questions about how the Grizzlies get involved in the metropolitan community and why they’ve been able to form such a solid fan base. Finally, Erick explores the Guesthouse at Graceland, learning about the King’s heart for helping others, as well as shedding a little light on his legacy at the annual Candlelight Vigil.

Lyrics to SUPERHERO
If I could wipe away the pain, I would
If I could throw it all away, I would
I'd be the voice of sunlight on a midnight train
I'd bend over backwards to push away the pain
Inside the madness, we fight
Inside the madness, we rise
When the angels open their eyes
How their hearts break to realize
All of the mistakes we've made, at what price?
Wheres our superhero tonight?
If I could free you from this burden, I would
If I could make you feel deserving of everything good
I'd be the voice of passion in a world so cold
Id bend over backwards to change this mold
Inside the madness, we fight
Inside the madness, we rise
When the angels open their eyes
How their hearts break to realize
All of the mistakes we've made, at what price?
Wheres our superhero tonight?
If I could free you from this pain
I would hold on so tightly
If I could be your superhero

Ep. 513 Taking Georgia's Slow Lane - Tennessee Valley Uncharted
Erick makes a trip to Georgia to see what its northern region has to offer. First he visits Helen, a town that looks more like Germany than the Southern United States. There he meets up with local photographer Jordan Tribble, and they take part in the food, drink, and dancing of Helen’s Oktoberfest. Then, it’s off to Dahlonega to wander the scenic vineyards of Frogtown Cellars. Erick talks and drinks with the owner, and he is amazed to learn how the South can produce some of the most delicious and award-winning wines. The beautiful landscapes and relaxation continue as he kayaks on the Toccoa with TVA’s Amy Blankenship. As he floats on the water with nothing but nature around him, Erick quickly finds out why this section of the river is Amy’s all-time favorite. He then discovers another hidden treasure (in the most literal sense of the term) when he explores the tunnels of Consolidated Gold Mine. Not only does he get a sense of how miners here used to do their work, but he also gets to pan for gold! Last is a stop at Mercier Orchards, a family-run orchard that produces over 50 varieties of apples. During conversations, treats, and cider with the marketing coordinator and the orchard manager, Erick is reminded of the importance of slowing down to enjoy life’s little moments.
