1974 to present day
Prior to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the city of Varosha had a population of 39,000. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on 20 July 1974, the Greek Cypriot army withdrew its forces to Larnaca. The Turkish army advanced as far as the Green Line, which is the present day border between the two communities. Just hours before the Greek Cypriot and Turkish armies met in military combat on the streets of Famagusta, the entire population fled, fearing a massacre. Many refugees fled south to Paralimni, Dherynia, and Larnaca. Paralimni has since become the modern day capital of the Famagusta province.
When the Turkish Army gained control of the area during the invasion, they fenced it off and have since barred admittance to anyone except Turkish military and United Nations personnel. The people living in Varosha hoped to return to their home when the situation calmed down, but the resort was fenced off by the Turkish military.
The UN Security Council Resolution 550 of 1984 ordered for Varosha to be handed over to the administration of the United Nations, and was to be resettled by no other people than the inhabitants who were forced out. The Turkish state did not comply but has held Varosha as a bargaining chip ever since in the hope of persuading the people of Cyprus into accepting a settlement of the Cyprus issue on their terms.
One such settlement plan was the Annan Plan, which the vast majority of Greek Cypriots rejected as unfair. It provided for the return of Varosha to the original residents, but this never happened because the plan was rejected by Greek Cypriot voters in a referendum, as the overall plan was considered unacceptable. The UN Security Council Resolution 550 states that it considers attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the United Nations. Since 1974, Turkey has forbidden entry to the district with the exception of the TSK personnel.
The European Court of Human Rights awarded between €100,000 and €8,000,000 to eight Greek Cypriots for being deprived of their homes and properties as a result of the 1974 invasion. The case was filed jointly by businessman Constantinos Lordos and others, with the principal judgement in the Lordos case dating back to November 2010. The court ruled that, in the case of eight of the applicants, Turkey had violated Article 1 of Protocol 1 of the European Convention on Human rights on the right of peaceful enjoyment of one's possessions, and in the case of seven of the applicants, Turkey had violated Article 8 on the right to respect for private and family life.
In the absence of human habitation and maintenance, buildings continue to decay. Nature is reclaiming the area, as metal corrodes, windows break, and plants work their roots into the walls and pavement. Sea turtles have been seen[by whom? nesting on the deserted beaches.
During the Cyprus Missile Crisis (1997-1998), the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, threatened to take over Varosha if the Cypriot government didn't back down.
Travel Cyprus | Walking Tour Famagusta (Gazimagusa) | Kibris, North Cyprus
Travel to Cyprus with a Walking Tour in Famagusta (Gazimagusa) in Kibris, North Cyprus.
➡️About Famagusta:
Famagusta (Greek: Αμμόχωστος, romanized: Ammochostos locally; Turkish: Mağusa, or Gazimağusa) is a city on the east coast of Cyprus. It is located east of Nicosia and possesses the deepest harbour of the island. During the medieval period (especially under the maritime republics of Genoa and Venice), Famagusta was the island's most important port city and a gateway to trade with the ports of the Levant, from where the Silk Road merchants carried their goods to Western Europe. The old walled city and parts of the modern city presently fall within the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Gazimağusa District, of which it is the capital.
In antiquity, the town was known as Arsinoe (Ancient Greek: Ἀρσινόη), after the Greek queen Arsinoe II of Egypt, and was mentioned by that name by Strabo. In Greek it is called Ammochostos (Αμμόχωστος), meaning hidden in [the] sand. This name developed into Famagusta (originally Famagouste in French and Famagosta in Italian), used in Western European languages, and to its Turkish name, Mağusa. In Turkish, the city is also called Gazimağusa; Gazi means veteran in Turkish, and the city has been officially awarded with the title after 1974 (compare Gaziantep). The old town is nicknamed the city of 365 churches owing to a legend that at its peak, Famagusta boasted one church for each day of the year.
The city was founded around 274 BC, after the serious damage to Salamis by an earthquake, by Ptolemy II Philadelphus and named Arsinoe after his sister.[4] Arsinoe was described as a fishing town by Strabo in his Geographica in the first century BC. It remained a small fishing village for a long time. Later, as a result of the gradual evacuation of Salamis due to the Arab invasion led by Muawiyah I, it developed into a small port.

Famagusta and Ghost city in Cyprus
A guided tour by Mr John to Famagusta (Varosha) and Ghost city in Cyprus. In 1974 the turkish military took controll over the northern part of Cyprus. Many greek cypriots had to leave to the southern parts of the island. Thus a big part of Famagusta is empty and forbidden area, divided by the green line. Only used for military training. One part of this is the big tourist complex, hotels that used to have almost 7000 beds together. Now totally empty, close to the most beautifull beaches on Cyprus. Some new hotells had been built. So today there are people at the beaches.
At the tour we also visited the old city who in older time had more than 300 churches.
Mr John, our guide lived in Famagusta when military took controll. He took us to places no other guide would know of. Not needed to say, but we had a wonderful day.
Absolutely NOTHING interesting to see on this Varosha, Cyprus ghost town 4k drone footage. Well...
Make sure you also watch the previous episodes of this Varosha adventure.
1. Filming Varosha is forbidden?
2. Getting caught by the 'police'
3. What I think about getting caught
4. Something fishy is going on in Varosha
5. Varosha Drone footage
I made up my mind and I am publishing the drone footage of Varosha, that the 'North Cyprus police' thought they had deleted.
Here are the reasons why I decided to do that:
1. I never lied to the officer and I never promised I would not publish anything. All I said was “I understand” as in “I understand what you say”.
2. No police officer will put the fate of his own life and job in the hands of an unknown tourist they just caught. It means this was just scare-tactics, hoping I would not publish anything if I still had it. As such he did his job well and he will not lose it over my publication.
3. The Turks illegally took Varosha and keep it occupied against UN resolution 550 and they illegally exploit activities over there. They are supposed to hand it over back to the original inhabitants and legal owners.
4. My video doesn not show ANYTHING interesting compared to what’s already out on the internet. But I want to publish it to complete and end this subject on my channel. (Unless new info pops up).
5. People who say “the law is the law” are blind slaves of governments. Governments should be questioned, challenged and held accountable by the public. Governments and authorities can be corrupt and thus they can use laws and rules to protect themselves and their illegal activities. Just to mention an extreme example: the Nazis would not want you to fly drones over their concentration camps either, would there have been any at that time...
6. Censorship by authorities who want to hide their illegal activities is a bad thing and need public opposition and exposure. Turkey is becoming notorious for censoring critics.
7. My flight was perfectly safe and did not endanger peoples lifes (such as flying into the landing route of airplanes), nor does the publication of it endanger anybodies life.
8. Publication of this video is perfectly in line of what I have been doing previously: I questioned the Spanish, the Dutch and the EU authorities for rediculous drone laws, I questioned drone pilots who dangerously fly their drones near aircrafts, putting aircrafts and people at risk. Now I question Turks for illegal occupation of stolen property and using it for their own pleasure. Nothing hypocryte about that in my opinion.
9. What the Turks did in Cyprus in 1974/1983 is what they are doing RIGHT NOW again in Afrin. They take land, occupy it, displacing thousands of people. Such things NEED to be addressed as long as it continues.

The ghost town of Cyprus after forty years of division - reporter
Since 1974 at an airport in Nicosia, time has stood still. It's a stark reminder of the fighting which led to the division of Cyprus forty years ago. But can a new initiative help start melting this frozen conflict?
George Lordos from the Bicommunal Famagusta Initiative is trying to bring the two communities together in an attempt to end the stalemate and heartache: The first time that I visited it was a bit of shock to be honest. I have memories from my town, my home, my school. I was seven y...

Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, on 20 July 1974 in response to a Greek-backed coup, the Greek Cypriot Army withdrew its forces to Larnaca. The Turkish Army advanced as far as the Green Line, which is the present day border between the two communities. Just hours before the Turkish Army and the Greek Cypriot Army met in military combat on the streets of Famagusta, the entire population, fearing a massacre, fled. Many refugees fled south to the towns of Paralimni, Deryneia, and Larnaca. Paralimni has since become the modern day capital of the Famagusta province in the Republic of Cyprus.
When the Turkish Army gained control of the area during the invasion, they fenced it off and have since barred admittance to anyone except Turkish military and United Nations personnel. The Annan Plan had provided for the return of Varosha to Greek Cypriot control, but this never happened, as the plan was rejected by Greek Cypriot voters.
The reason why Varosha is abandoned is due to the UN Security Council Resolution 550 (taken in 11 May 1984),[3] which in short states that: attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible. Since TRNC is not allowed to resettle the area and the area is under TRNC control, this situation led to the abandonment of the Varosha district.
Since 1974, entry to the district is forbidden with the exception of the TSK personnel and the students of the girls' dormitory in there.
As no one has inhabited the area and no repairs have been carried out, all of the buildings are slowly falling apart. Nature is reclaiming the area, as metal corrodes, windows break, and plants work their roots into the walls and pavement. Sea turtles have been seen nesting on the deserted beaches. Car dealerships are stocked with vintage 1974 models, and years following the abandonment, people claimed to have seen lightbulbs still burning in the windows of abandoned buildings.
