Dejarnettes Part 2
We're back again to search further into Dejarnettes. For everybody that doesn't know Dejarnettes was an insane asylum in Staunton, Virginia that closed down in 1996. They did forced sterilizations on patients and there's rumors of experimentation in the earlier days. That being said the patients who were there were extremely unhappy. I had more footage but I couldn't process it all in HD, hope you enjoy what I could render.

JBS Haldane Lecture 2018 : Prof. John Tresch - Barnum, Bache and Poe.
JBS Haldane Lecture 2018 : Prof. John Tresch - Barnum, Bache and Poe: Forging Science in a Media Revolution.
The Department of Science and Technology Studies holds its second JBS Haldane Lecture of 2018 with Professor John Tresch of The Warburg Institute, discussing the history of PT Barnum, Alexander Dallas Bache, and Edgar Allen Poe - their relation to developments in science during that era, and the similarities with present-day America.
The JBS Haldane Lecture Series is the flagship public lecture series from the Department of Science and Technology Studies at UCL. Named in honour of UCL Professor JBS Haldane, a polymath not only in the life sciences but also in science communication and science policy, the department aims to hold these biannually. More details can be found on the STS Website at
Abstract:
Today’s scientific and political institutions face severe challenges, nowhere more visibly than in the USA— where scientific evidence of climate change is scorned by a media-obsessed president whose heroes include the nativist demagogue Andrew Jackson and the con-artist P.T. Barnum. This lecture returns to the 1830s and 1840s, the era of Barnum, Jackson, and a communications revolution, to explore competing visions of the cosmos and of the relation between science and the demos in a moment of turmoil. Two opposed tendencies characterised antebellum public culture: first, a sharp increase in printed communication, with periodicals, audiences, styles, and authors exploding in number and diversity; second, a coordinated movement by educated elites to control knowledge through centralised and hierarchical institutions. In the sciences, the Lyceum movement and Barnum’s “American Museum” typified the first, while the U.S. Coast Survey, directed by Benjamin Franklin’s great grandson, the West Point-educated polymath, Alexander Dallas Bache, exemplified the second.
The work of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was shaped by both tendencies. Trained at West Point, Poe wrote frequently about the sciences, even as he invented new forms of literary sensationalism. He “forged” American science and letters in two senses: by supporting projects to establish a unified and regulated intellectual infrastructure, and by crafting believable fakes which fed popular uncertainty about authority over knowledge. Poe thus offers astute, prophetic, and dramatically conflicted commentary on science, its publics, and the stories it tells.

The Thin Light of Freedom: The Civil War and Emancipation in the Heart of America
While a destructive and bloody war raged across Virginia in the aftermath of Gettysburg, free black families sent husbands and sons to fight with the U.S. Colored Troops. In letters home, even as Lincoln commemorated the dead at Gettysburg, they spoke of a war for emancipation. In The Thin Line of Freedom, acclaimed historian Edward L. Ayers, discusses the end of slavery, Reconstruction, the Freedmen’s Bureau, and new society struggling to emerge. A book signing will follow the program.
Unearthing Sally Hemings' legacy at Monticello
Visitors have long come to Monticello to see and admire Thomas Jefferson's mansion, but a new silhouette and exhibition bring a largely hidden life into the open. No portrait exists of Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman who had a decades-long relationship with Jefferson and bore him six children, but the public can now learn the contours of her story. Jeffrey Brown reports.

Faith, Race, and Politics

For more on the Georgetown Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life:
October 2, 2019 | In a polarized nation, faith, race, and politics can be divisive topics on their own. Bringing them together can be explosive. This Public Dialogue sought to explore the intersections of faith, race, and politics in the United States in ways that can inform and engage, rather than pull us apart.
This timely conversation included an African-American political leader trying to connect biblical values and U.S. politics; a white evangelical leader insisting that “Who is my neighbor?” is the central question of the 2020 presidential campaign; a Latino bishop serving a Catholic diocese along the U.S.-Mexico border; and a respected journalist who has spent years covering the ways faith and race intersect in American politics and culture.
This dialogue was a continuation of the Initiative’s series on Faith and the Faithful in U.S. Politics. This particular conversation asked:
What are the religious, social, and political contexts for how faith and race are playing out in our nation and in the 2020 campaign?
In what ways is faith being tested, used, or misused by believers and religious communities in addressing the challenges of racism, discrimination, and injustice?
How do race and ethnicity shape the public convictions, choices, and priorities of religious voters and communities?
How do these links challenge religious communities? The Democratic Party? The Republican Party?
How do these factors affect debates on immigration, abortion, criminal justice, poverty, and other global issues?
Will the interaction of faith, race, and politics continue to deepen divisions? Or can faith provide principles and approaches that build community across racial, ethnic, and political lines?
This Public Dialogue was co-sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, the Institute of Politics and Public Service, and the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life.
