How a giant perogy saved this small town
In this episode of Big Things Small Towns, Tamarra Canu visits Glendon, Alberta and hears all about the huge perogy that kept the town alive.

If there's one thing Albertans do even better than huge trucks and grain elevators, it's making massive monuments for little places. Follow Tamarra Canu on her summer Albertan road trip as she travels her province to find out what these big things meant to the small towns that call them home.
It's one of Alberta's strangest objects, made with love by citizens committed to their town's existence and serious dedication from their former mayor of nearly 40 years. What was happening to our town is it was dying, so we had to come up with something out of the ordinary to have people come in, says former mayor Johnnie Doonanco, who even submitted the Glendon Perogy to be on the back of the toonie when the $2 bill was eliminated.
On Big Things Small Towns we visit six of Alberta's most legendary locations:
- Drumheller! The World's Largest Dinosaur takes you back to prehistoric times. Plus, you can see how it and many other dinos are made.
- Falher! You'll celebrate the World's Largest Bee in more ways than one (including witnessing Tamarra facing one of her biggest fears by participating in their annual bee beard spectacle.
- Vegreville! You'll find out why the World's Largest Pysanka (or painted egg) is truly unique from creation to design.
- Glendon! Tamarra's headed to take a bite out of its world-famous perogy and discover how the monument may have saved the town itself.
- Donalda! The World's Largest Oil Lamp has been lighting the way for tourists to discover the beauty within the walls of the town.
- Medicine Hat! This town celebrates Indigenous art and identity with the spectacular Saamis Tepee that celebrates culture, history and the legacy of the Edmonton Olympics.

Introducing No Ordinary Journey Foundation (NOJF) - March 2014 Vietnam Mission
This documentary by Shaw TV Access Calgary introduces No Ordinary Journey Foundation (NOJF) and centers on Laverne Bissky, founder, executive director and parent expert.
The setting is the 3 week mission of March 2014 to several rehabilitation hospitals in Vietnam where 100+ parents and their children with cerebral palsy (CP) were given one-on-one workshops on the management and caring of CP with their children. At the conclusion of the 2 day workshops, a total of 12 wheelchairs, manufactured by a local wheelchair manufacturer through private donations, were gifted to the most needy children.
This team comprised 8 from Calgary, 1 each from United States, Hungary and Australia and 2 native born interpreters from Edmonton. There were also 10 Vietnamese professionals who graciously volunteered their time as interpreters, travelled with the NOJF team and contributed as superb cultural attaches. Through social media, some of these volunteers came on-board within several weeks of departure.
Special thanks to Paul Helmer, producer/editor at Shaw TV Calgary and his entire team who made this documentary a reality.
Special thanks also to Linku Xavier producer/host and his entire team at VTV4, Hanoi - Vietnam's international english broadcaster for the on-going support of NOJF missions in Vietnam and this documentary. During this mission, Linku and his cameraman spent several days with the NOJ team chronicling the work of Laverne Bissky of No Ordinary Journey Foundation and the professional volunteers, from Canada, USA, Australia, Hungary & especially the many Vietnamese professionals who connected with NOJFoundation & made this mission a success.
This mission also produced planning sessions for further projects in Vietnam for 2015/16.

Worlds Largest Easter Egg - Vegreville, Alberta
This is located in Vegreville, Alberta and is the largest Ukrainian Pysanka in the world. It is made of metal.
A pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, to write or to inscribe, as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax.
