Japanese woodworking is the most creative art.
Japanese carpentry is a style of carpentry originating in Japan which uses distinctive woodworking joints. It is closely related to Japanese architecture.
Though there is a core practice shared by all Japanese carpenters, defined by a vocabulary of tools and joints and a methodology of working, a carpenter will typically identify with one of four distinct carpentry professions. Miyadaiku 宮大工 practice the construction of Japanese shrines and temples, and are renowned for their use of elaborate wooden joints and the fact that the buildings they construct are frequently found among the world's longest surviving wooden structures.
Woods used in Japanese carpentry and woodwork, as well as tool construction, include sugi (杉), akamatsu (赤松), hinoki (檜 or 桧), Camphor Laurel, Magnolia obovata, keyaki (欅) and kiri (桐).
Dylan Iwakuni from Kyoto, Japan, is one of the most talented carpenter artist/woodturner there is.
He employs traditional Japanese carpentry and woodworking techniques to create his masterpieces.
Dylan says;;
“Currently, there are several places to learn about woodworking in Japan; however, they are hosted in Japanese. Over the past few months, I have learned that there are many people who wish to study in Japan but are held back because of the language barrier. Due to this, many are hesitant to pursue their dreams of studying woodworking in Japan.
I believe it is a waste for people to give up on thoroughly learning something they are passionate about just because of the language.
So I thought about it… and realized the answer to this big barrier is to build a school catered for English speakers where they can learn these woodworking skills.”
This school will be conducted in English where you will learn intensively about traditional Japanese woodworking. It will be taught directly by an active Japanese carpenter. An English speaking carpenter will also be on hand to help translate.

Tour Hiroshima Castle Grounds In 6 Steps: Homemade Adventures
Hey everyone, Charlie from Homemade Adventures Here, we want to thank you for joining us today. We are going to take you traveling with us, as we explore Hiroshima Castle in 6 Steps!
In contrast to typical mountaintop castles, Lord Mori Terumoto built Hiroshima Castle on the plains of the Otagawa River Delta. He believed the castle should serve as a political and economic base surrounded by and integrating with its castle town. in 1600, Fukushima Masanori became the lord of the region and further developed the castle town by enhancing its moat and fortified enclosures, as well as building the Saigoku Kaido Road. Asano Nagaakira became the new lord of 1619 and the Asano Clan retained control of the castle for the next 250 years. After the Meiji restoration of 1868, the castle became a major military headquarters. It's served as the Imperial Headquarters with Supreme Military Commander during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. On August 6th, 1945 the castle keep and the military facilities inside were destroyed along with Hiroshima City during the atomic bombing. The castle keep was reconstructed for the Hiroshima Restoration Exposition held in 1958. Since ancient times, Hiroshima Castle has also been known as Carp Castle, From which the professional baseball team Hiroshima Toyo Carp was named.
REAR GATE OF THE ENCLOSURE
You can see the ruins of the rear gate which was located to the east of the main enclosure. The gate stood between the remaining stonewalls, upon which it connecting Tower was placed. The Shukkeien, a garden owned by the Asano Clan is 900m to the east.
STONE WALLS pt.1
During the time of the Mori Clan, the stone walls were constructed using a technique called “nosura-zumi”, which piled up stones typically collected from coastal areas without altering their natural shape. However, this technique made it easy for invaders to climb up due to the many gaps between the stones.
CASTLE KEEP
The keep of the Hiroshima Castle is 39m from the bottom of the stone walls to the top of his roof. The protruding part at the top of the northwest corner is called “ishi-otoshi”, which is for dropping stones against the enemy who climbed up the stone walls. They keep has many rectangular or triangular openings called “sama”, which was used to fire guns or launch arrows. However, since Hiroshima Castle was never besieged, neither the ishi-otoshi nor the sama have ever been used in actual battle. Currently, the keep is being used as a history museum.
ENGRAVINGS
Many of the stone walls built in the time of the Fukushima Clan have Engravings marked on them, which may have been done to discourage theft. At Hiroshima Castle, 214 Engravings and 39 patterns can be found primarily on Fukushima Clan era stone walls.
STONE WALLS pt.2
In the Fukushima and Asano eras, the stone walls were constructed using a technique of piling up slightly process stones to fill in gaps called blank with Corners that crumble easily further reinforced using a technique called “uchikomi-hagi”. With corners that crumbled easily further reinforced using a technique called “sangi-zumi”. When reconstruction sections that had collapsed, Lord Fukushima Masanori left the usable parts intact. This is why you can see a combination of stone walls using techniques from different eras. It is said that Lord Fukushima repaired the stone walls without obtaining permission from the shogunate. In addition, the stone walls were arranged in a zigzag pattern called “yokoya”, to make it easy to attack incoming enemies with guns and arrows from the flank.
A-bombed Trees
At 8:15 a.m., August 6th, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, resulting in the loss of more than a 140,000 lives. Hiroshima Castle, too, was devastated by the bombing. In front of you is a giant pussy willow that withstood the atomic blast, 770m from the hypocenter. Its original Trunk became hollowed-out but it still grows lush green leaves during the summer. Throughout the castle grounds, there are a variety of other A-bomb trees such as eucalyptus, Kurogane Holly, Camphor which are still standing.
