The Best Cycling In Taiwan | Taroko Gorge With Giant Rental Bikes
Today was my favorite day from our recent trip of cycling in Taiwan. My wife and I will be cycling through the Taroko Gorge. We rented some flat bar road bikes from the Hualien Giant store, and were quickly on our way. Words can't explain how incredibly beautiful the surrounding area of Hualien is and we saw so many stunning sights within the Taroko National park as well. By far one of my favorite days of riding in my entire life and highly recommended if you're planning to do some cycling in Taiwan.
I've been wanting to cycle in the Taroko Gorge ever since I first heard of it from the Taiwan KOM challenge a few years back.. The footage I saw had to be some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen someone ride their bike through.. Today, that dream is finally coming true.
We arrived in Hualien (花蓮), Taiwan last night by train after my wife Thuong arrived in Taipei. We quickly woke up and went to the nearby GIANT Bicycle store to pick up our rental bikes to begin our Taiwan Cycling Trip. In today's ride, we're riding from Hualien to the Taroko Gorge in the Taroko National Park.
There were so many beautiful sights to see and attractions along the way, so this video is a bit longer than normal..
In total, today's ride ended up being about 80km
Strava:
Our bicycle rentals only cost about 1,700 NTD for 4 days, and we later used those for our ride down from Hualien to Taitung. You can pick them up at one store and drop them off at another (highly recommended service)
On today's ride, we visited many of the attractions within the Taroko Gorge, including the Eternal Spring Shrine, Swallow Grotto, and more!
Part of our ride today is also part of the infamous Taiwan KOM challenge route!

Taiwan Cycling Trip | Tour of Hualien by Road Bike + Awesome Bike Path
Welcome to part 3 of our 2018 Taiwan Cycling Trip! After a great ride yesterday through the Taroko Gorge, we decided to spend today cycling around the beautiful city of Hualien (花蓮) with our rented road bikes from GIANT Bicycle Co.
We found a nice bike path along the river which took us to another great bike path along the rocky ocean, which had some pretty stunning views.
We kept riding and unfortunately got stuck in the rain and had to take shelter at a nearby convenience store. We took that opportunity to grab some hot Taiwanese bento lunch boxes and refuel before we continued riding into the mountains towards Liyu Lake.
All in all, a great day of cycling! Hualien is absolutely beautiful with all of the stunning mountain scenery so close.

[Cycling Taiwan] Ride From Hualien to Taitung Day 1 台灣 自行車 花蓮~台東
In today's Cycling Taiwan vlog, we'll be using our rented road bikes (giant fastroad) to cycle along the Taiwan east coast from Hualien (花蓮) to Tautung (台東).
This ride in total is about 200km and so we split it up into 2 days. In the first half, we decided to cycle down the more coastal and scenic route along highway 11.
We (I) didn't really properly research the route, and it ended up being much hillier and zig-zaggy than I had imagined, making us really feel the extra bike load from our panier bags.
Fortunately, we were able to send our main luggage ahead to Taitung by train at a fee of only 150 NTD, which is really cheap!
After cycling down the coast for a while and passing through a few tunnels, the dreaded rain clouds decided to say hello and the ride started to get a bit more difficult.
To get to our hotel for the night, we had to cut through the mountain pass from highway 11 to highway 9, and after descending down the mountain pass into more rain, we were quite drained of energy, but then came across this BEAUTIFUL park (Danongdafu Forest Park 大農大富平地森林園區). Even in the rain it all looked so beautiful with all of the trees and well maintained bike paths.. I really would love to come back and explore this some day, but unfortunately no time today..
After riding in the rain for what seemed like forever without any stops, we finally found a 7-eleven convenience store and grabbed some warm foods. My fingers were actually numb at this point despite starting the ride in fairly warm conditions.
After fueling up and recovering a bit, we continued on along highway 9 and finally made it to our hotel for the night. Time to hit the bed and wake up and do the second half!

Taiwan - Hualien County - Hualien Sugar Factory
Next to the Hualien Sugar Factory are Japanese-style bungalows, organized in neat rows. Large-scale Japanese-style buildings like these are very rare in Taiwan. These residences, made of Chinese cypress, were built for the factory employees during the Japanese occupation. For many, these well-preserved old buildings create feelings of nostalgia.

Taiwan 16 From Taichung to Hualien Part 1 of 2
Taiwan is a very attractive country for people who like to travel around and see interesting places instead of laying on far away or busy beaches. In the past my family and I only visited the main cities of Taiwan like Taipei, Keelung, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung always carrying our baggage with us. In recent years we discovered it is more relaxed to stay a couple days in one city before going to the next city and take a local train or regional bus every day to discover smaller places and areas around the bigger cities. Public transport and taxis in Taiwan are relatively cheap compared to the rates in Europe so the daily surprise trips are affordable. With the video series “Attractive Taiwan – Interesting places” we want to share our impressions of the surprise places we have visited in the past years which can be seen as suggestions to others when planning a holiday to Taiwan. We hope you will enjoy watching each video.

Dongdamen means big east gate and is located at the eastern edge of the city at the coast. The night market is part of a larger bazaar and events area located west of Zhongshan Road and south of Chongqing Road.
The back side of the market is home to Aboriginal Street, a lane filled with local merchants selling Aboriginal snacks and other gifts.
The three main market lanes are Futing Market (Taiwanese food), Aboriginal Street (native Aboriginal food), and a street representing the foods from all provinces of mainland China. In the centre, is a plaza with a lookout tower, restrooms, tourist information centre, and other attractions.

WHO ARE WE?
We are a small publishing company (Vision) based in Taipei. We produce an English magazine (Travel in Taiwan) introducing you to Taiwan as a travel destination. Read it! Lot of useful information. We also have a website with lots of articles about Taiwan. Visit it! We try to make a video or two every week. Let us know what you think about this channel and what you would like to see about Taiwan. All the best to you!
From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2018-7-8:
Feicui Valley
The pathway is less than 1km long and takes you upriver along the Mugua, through an old tunnel with dozing ceiling-clinging bats, and along an up-and-down au naturel exposed-root section to a tributary-stream waterfall with a wadeable rock pool at its base. This is the bottom of the narrow Feicui (Emerald) Valley, increasingly popular with river tracers.
Jilitan
Up a tributary stream just inside the mouth you’ll find the placid Jilitan (Jili Pond). It was created by the Japanese as a log pond, and is now cleared. It’s the centerpiece of a new breeze-brushed park with walking paths, Chinese imperial-style arch bridges, and foot-soak facilities.
Jinlai Huilan B&B
Located north of Ruisui town on Highway 9, the Jinlai Huilan B&B is run by a delightfully warm and young husband/wife team who not long ago decided to opt out of big-city living. Its layout is motel-like. Meals are taken in the main entrance area, and the five simple, tastefully appointed rooms, in the rear and along one side, are entered directly from outside. The tableau seen from the rooms is blissfully quaint – across valley-floor farms into the Butterfly Valley, trains drumming along with percussion-like rhythm in the distance. The meals are another soothing satisfaction. The husband has international-cuisine culinary-arts training, and clearly studied well.
(Rooms start at NT$2,200)

Butterfly Valley Resort
The Fuyuan National Forest Recreation Area is in yet another central-range valley. The park is between the towns of Guangfu and Ruisui. The focus here is eco-tourism. The Butterfly Valley Resort ( is managed by a commissioned private enterprise, and most of its amenities are just inside the park entrance. This is near Fuyuan Stream’s lower reaches, where the terrain is less steep. The resort’s amenities include a small upscale hotel, landscaped gardens, a butterfly museum, and an outdoor hot-spring spa. Guided eco-tours are available. These last 1.5 hours and take you through the gardens, along lower-area trails, and into the more rugged upper area. The upper area offers misty waterfalls, suspension bridges, and a broad camphor-tree stand. A fee is charged for non-hotel guests.
Coastal Skywalk
The new Hualien Fengbin Sky Trail is a double-thrill attraction. The “sky trail” is a 150m cliff-clinging skywalk that hangs you right out over the ocean, breakers and shore fishermen at your feet. A 20m section is transparent. The trail follows a narrow old path hacked from the cliff face, which connected local villages during the Japanese period. The second thrill is that your access walk is along a retired cliff-edge section of Highway 11. Your skywalk return is through an old highway tunnel, today filled with gift and snack stands.
Dashibi Hill
The hill on the south side of Jiqi Beach is easily ascended. It juts out into the sea, and the highway curves around it inland. The wood-stair pathway to the top, the Dashibi Hill Trail, starts at a highway-side parking lot and takes about 15 easy minutes to conquer. Your reward is splendid views of the rugged coastline north and south, local fishing craft out at sea, and the highway-side indigenous village inland.
Jiqi Beach
Jiqi Beach offers 3km of soft sandy shoreline in a shallow bay surrounded by mountain on three sides. This is the first good swimming beach south of Hualien City. On the south end is a resort with water- and beach-fun equipment, a snack shop, a retail/gift shop, and a camping area with covered wooden platforms.
