CHINESE GIANT SALAMANDER - Andrias davidianus (London Zoo) 2
After several exclamations about it walking straight up to the glass to face me I said that maybe we were two kindred spirits and it sensed that? LOL!
Fascinatingly beautiful.
Would like to have seen one at twice the size but it was a special moment all the same!
These London Zoo videos were filmed a couple of months back and I kept forgetting to upload them ...
I have something called Fibrofog from a condition called Fibromyalgia that causes a lot of pain along with embarrassing things too ... 120 odd all told.
Doesn't include my Oesophagitis, Hiatus Hernia, damaged right knee though.
The NHS wrongly diagnosed me and then kept the real diagnosis from me when they realised for what I thought was 13 years. I later realised it was closer to 20 years!
That along with something that courts, councils and others did that went back 20 years and then turned into a court case over 3 years was why I got involved in sniffing out corruption, recording it mostly by sound and some video and started up my corruption blog.
To my surprise the next thing I knew, well after several years of recording, the corruption and lies were everywhere and I haad over 100GB of collected data.
Could be more than 150GB now? Not counted it up in a fair old while.
WAs happy here as I thought my endeavours in this subject were about to take me away on a very long journey?
It has stalled! LOL ...groan! Likely stopped completely. Only time will tell.

Giant Japanese Salamanders in an underwater cave
Two Giant Japanese Salamanders climb over each other trying to get comfortable inside an underwater cave. These two animals were each 3-4 feet long and were filmed in the Gifu Prefecture in Japan.
Giant Japanese Salamanders hold the highest level of protection and regard in Japan (akin to a Bald Eagle in the US) and are the second-largest Salamander species in the world, only marginally smaller than the Chinese variant.
Filmed using a GoPro Hero 4 Black and Light and Motion Gobe lights.

ZHANGJIAJIE tour plus Fenghuang,Shaoshan and Changsha.May 2012.
7 days 6 nites trip. Packed with amazing scenery, the wonders of nature and man's incredible efforts to reach it.
Zhangjiajie_ starts day 2 :with the Ten Mile Gallery tour by mini train. After lunch it was a cable-car ride up to Tianzi Mtn ( with fantastic views of the sandstone pinnacles on the way up.)to view Helong Park. A bronze statue of Marshal He Long stands there. Platform availble to view the sandstone forest. A walk to the bus stop where we Q-ed to take the shuttle to Yuanjiajie_ here was a long walk to see the natural bridge & typical sandstone pinnacles eroded into various shapes and covered with vegetation. The unigue peaks and rocks of the Mihun Stage are the inspiration for the Avatar movie.
Left by taking the Hundred Dragon Elevator (Bailong Elevator)down. This glass elevator was built on the side of a cliff 1,070 feet high.At the base was another breathtaking viewing platform. Day ended at the the Golden Whip Stream.
Day 3: Baofeng Lake, situated at the back of a mountain. Good exercise climbing up to take a cruise in the serene picturesque lake and then climbing down steps
on the other side of the Baofeng mountain.
Dragon King Cave next_ huge and impressive, with a stalagmite shaped like a monk taking a shower. Ended the day with a visit to the salamander museum.
Day4: Left the National Park for the city to visit Sand and Rock gallery. After lunch took cable-car tothe top of Tianmen Mountain. Rained. The walk on the Glass Plank hugging the side of the cliff 1430 feet high was less scary with the mist. Took the cablecar to the middle station, transfered to a bus to weave up the mountain ( 99-zigzag avenue to Heaven!). Heavy rain did not stop the determined from climbing 999 steps ( Heavenly Reaching Ladder) to reach the Tianmen Cave which is actually a collapsed cliff-face. At the top was a statue of a winged dragon.
Day ended with a spectacular outdoor stage show set on the edge of the mountains.
Day5: Visit to a Miao cultural village before arriving in Feng Huang or Ancient Phoenix Village, served by the River Toujiang.Outside the Northern Gate is Huxiao Shoal. Here, a narrow 100-meter-long wooden bridge supported by 15 stone blocks spans the Tuojiang River. This used to be the city's only exit, called the Jumping Rock by the local people. The bridge is so narrow that it must be crossed in single file. The stilted houses by the river called DiaoJiaoLou are typical Miao/Tuja architecture.
Day 6: Rained. Took 8 hours to reach Shaoshan, in time to see Mao Zedong's house and monument . Visiting hours at his former residence end at 5pm. Another 2 hour to Changsha. Visited Tian Xin De, an ancient city gat. After a Mao family cuisine for dinner we visited the riverbank of Xiangjiang at night. Day ended at the pedestrian mall, Huang Xing Road.
Day 7: Last day. After the Embroidery Museum we visited the Mawangdui Museum of tomb relics. The family's coffin was sealed in 4 layers and the matriach's body was found well preserved for 2000 years . Lunch was at the West lake restaurant , With its 5,000 seats, it is considered the largest restaurant in China and in Asia, and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest Chinese restaurant in the world.

Biomechanics and hydrodynamics of prey capture in the Chinese giant salamander reveal a high-performance jaw-powered suction feeding mechanism
J. R. Soc. Interface 6 May 2013 vol. 10 no. 82 20121028 doi: 10.1098/rsif.2012.1028
Abstract
During the evolutionary transition from fish to tetrapods, a shift from uni- to bidirectional suction feeding systems followed a reduction in the gill apparatus. Such a shift can still be observed during metamorphosis of salamanders, although many adult salamanders retain their aquatic lifestyle and feed by high-performance suction. Unfortunately, little is known about the interplay between jaws and hyobranchial motions to generate bidirectional suction flows. Here, we study the cranial morphology, as well as kinematic and hydrodynamic aspects related to prey capture in the Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus). Compared with fish and previously studied amphibians, A. davidianus uses an alternative suction mechanism that mainly relies on accelerating water by separating the 'plates' formed by the long and broad upper and lower jaw surfaces. Computational fluid dynamics simulations, based on three-dimensional morphology and kinematical data from high-speed videos, indicate that the viscerocranial elements mainly serve to accommodate the water that was given a sufficient anterior-to-posterior impulse beforehand by powerful jaw separation. We hypothesize that this modified way of generating suction is primitive for salamanders, and that this behaviour could have played an important role in the evolution of terrestrial life in vertebrates by releasing mechanical constraints on the hyobranchial system.
