The Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland; what is it and where is it located?
The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns which were produced as a result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. The Giant's Causeway is located in County Antrim, on the north coast of Northern Ireland and it is now one of the top attractions in Northern Ireland.
The Giant's Causeway is also located near the Bushmills town, it is just 4.8 kilometers northeast of the town - which could give visitors the chance to pass by Bushmills and check what this city has to offer them from views and touristic attractions (
The Giant's Causeway has been given several awarded names throughout the history, such as being declared a World Heritage Site in 1986 by UNESCO, and a national nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland.
Those stepping stones forming the columns of the Giant's Causeway that lead from the cliff foot, disappear under the sea. Most of these columns are hexagonal although there are also some with four, five, seven or even eight sides. The tallest of these columns is about 12 meters high and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 meters thick in places.
The Giant's Causeway and the Causeway Coast are considered from the most famous touristic attractions in Northern Ireland. This place is free of charge for those willing to visit, you will only get charged if you go through the visitor's centre, which you don't actually have to do.
The interesting part about the Giant's Causeway is the story of the giant. According to the legend, the Giant's Causeway is the result of a causeway that was built by a giant. The story of this giant, who was called Fionn mac Cumhaill from the Fenian Cycle of the Gaelic mythology, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway so that the two giants could meet. There are two different versions for the story, the first says that Fionn actually defeated Benandonner, while in another version, he hides from Benandonner when he realized that his foe is bigger than his. Fionn's wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the 'baby', he reckons that its father Fionn, must be a giant and thus he flees back to Scotland in fright, destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn would be unable to chase him down (
You could visit the Giant's Causeway and have a knowledgeable walk with one of our tour guides or you could pick an audio tour guide and walk around with your own pace. While being at the Giant's Causeway area, you could climb the Shepherd's Steps and hike along the cliff-top trail to get a bird's eye view of the beautiful causeway coast.
We have made lots of different visits to the Giant's Causeway and we would still love to go and check this historic and natural place and recommend it for all those coming to visit Northern Ireland. You could check these different links related to the Giant's Causeway and the Causeway Coast:
There are different things to do near the Giant's Causeway, such as visiting Bushmills town and thus getting to visit the Bushmills Distillery which is the most famous Irish beer ( visiting Ballintoy Harbour which is one of the beautiful coastal locations that are found in County Antrim ( going to the Dunluce Castle ( and also checking the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge ( where Game of Thrones was filmed.
There are lots of nature and historical places which are found all across Northern Ireland, no matter in which town or county you are going to stay, such as the case with the Giant's Causeway and the Causeway Coast and all those different touristic attractions which are placed close to it.
This was one of the tours we have recently made to the Giant's Causeway and this is the kind of information that you might want to know about the history of the place - have you ever been there before? Did you get astonished by the view of those basalt columns?
You could also check our website connollycove.com and get to read different articles about different travel destinations and watch lots of videos taken in lots of different places, whether in the UK or even in other parts of the world.

Giant's Causeway on the Fabulous Northern Ireland Coast
I'm out on the wild and windswept Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, heading to the extraordinary Giant's Causeway, on the trail of the legendary Finn MacCool.
It's a fantastic walk from Ballintoy – where they film Game of Thrones – along the coast to reach the National Trust-protected bay, whose amazing rock formations look like they're from a different planet.
Plus, I fall in the water and show the results with my trusty Butt-Cam – what's not to like?

We’re on the Causeway Coastal trail here in Northern Ireland!
Driving the Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland is one of the greatest drives in the world
By far I would say for me the biggest highlight was the Giant’s Causeway
I’ll never forget walking out there for the first time and
my jaw dropping because there’s all these basalt columns
you know they look like they’ve been placed there by an architect
Yeah legend has it that the giant Finn McCool made a giant causeway
hence the name
over to Scotland to fight with another giant
The Carrick-A-Rede Bridge
Now this is an old bridge that the fishermen used to use back in the day
You know what it’s been modernized now for tourists
When you take this bridge over
like the bridge is a highlight yes
but when you get out there and you’re standing
on these massive massive cliffs
you know overlooking the ocean
you really feel small
I really respected mother nature
when I was standing there
Yeah this is a wild coastal route
I’m telling you the waves are pounding
the cliffs are giant
these are some of the highest sea cliffs in the world
and when you’re standing out there
you’re just in awe
If you do get a chance
I highly recommend Ballintoy Harbour
this was one of my favourite stops
you really get up close to those wave crashing
against those cliffs and it really does take your breath away
when you’re standing there
the beauty about this place too is that
tour busses can’t get down there
and for those Game of Thrones TV buffs out there
this was used as Theon Greyjoy’s home
when he sailed his ship into the harbour
well it was Ballintoy harbour
And we can’t leave out the Dark Hedges
this is another Game of Thrones reference
it’s this grove of beach trees that tower
and make sort of a tree cave
over this really long road
It’s absolutely beautiful
it’s also Northern Ireland’s most photographed
tourist site
Having a car and doing our self-drive
around the coastal route was really key
because we could get there early in the morning
when no one else was there
and we had the Dark Hedges all to ourselves
And if you like castles
Dunluce Castle is another great stop
in Northern Ireland along the Coastal Route
again they don’t dress up their castles
you know it’s just overhanging on these cliffs
and you can just imagine what life would’ve been like
there when people were living there
One place that you gotta make sure you go out to
is the Mussenden Temple
now that’s one of the last stops
or it is the last stop on the Causeway Coastal Route
and then you go back into London Derry into
the cities and everything
but this is a nice stop and Dave loved photographing it
Yeah when I read about the Mussenden Temple
I was really curious because
you walk through a small settlement
and remnants of a settlement that’s there
and you get to the edge of this cliff and there’s
this very small stone temple
that just doesn’t look like it belongs
but it’s an incredible scene to photograph
One last thing that we have to recommend
is a little side trip that you can do
and that’s going out to Torr Head Drive
Not a lot of people make this drive out
but I highly recommend it because
as you get out t this point
you stand there and
it is the closest point to Scotland
Yes it is
It feels like you could almost reach out
and touch Scotland from there
The Giant’s Causeway Coastal Route
is just one of the best things anyone can do
it’s by far one of our favourite drives
we’ve ever done
I highly recommend it
Yeah if you love road trips
don’t miss the Causeway Coastal Route
in Northern Ireland
The Giant's Causeway in the north of Ireland
A video taster of the Giant's Causeway on the coast of Co Antrim in the north of Ireland. Scientists say it was caused by volcanic eruptions...local legend says it was built by the Irish giant Finn MacCool who wanted to build a pathway to Scotland so he could fight a Scottish giant. What is the Giant's Causeway? County Antrim Northern Ireland
When it comes to the Giant's Causeway, there are two different legends which are always heard and which always come to the person and which one he/she wants to believe - from our side, we always feel that the second one makes more sense! (
The first legend related to the stories told about the Giant's Causeway and the formation of those rocks is the one about Fionn McCool - the famous Irish giant was having a fight with a Scottish giant - Benandonner who is threatening Ireland.
Finn grabs stones from the Antrim coast and throws them into the sea. The rock forms a path for Finn to follow to Scotland and teach Benandonner a lesson. When Fionn arrives - he sees Benandonner is massive! Finn gets home to Antrim as quick as possible, followed by the giant. Fionn hides in his babies pram in his house and when the Scottish Giant arrives - he sees the baby and decided if the child was that big, the daddy must be really huge. So leaves - pulling up the stones as he goes, leaving only the stones we see today at the Giants Causeway! (
The second myth or legend told about this place or the second version that you might be hearing about the place is - the Causeway is from old Volcano's from 60 million years ago - which left 40,000 basalt columns for us to wonder at today!
Questions answered in this short video include -
How was the giant's causeway formed?
Giant's Causeway Rock?
Giant's Causeway Formation?
What is the Giant's Causeway?
How was giant's causeway formed?
Giant's causeway information
What caused the giant's causeway?
Giant's causeway geology
Finn Mccool and the giant's causeway
Knowing more about the Giant's Causeway became a demand by those who will be visiting the place and that is exactly the reason why we decided to bring some information about the place and unfold those legends and myths which are told just to give those people the chance to know the history behind the place which they are going to visit. (
The Giant's Causeway is a natural rock formation that is believed to be formed from a volcanic eruption and which has been found there since millions of years and which is located on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland, just a few miles from the town of Bushmills and that is why it is always considered in Bushmills and people are always advised to visit those other locations which are found near Bushmills.
The Giant's Causeway is actually one of the most famous touristic attractions in Northern Ireland and it was voted as the fourth best natural wonder in the UK. It is not just that and not only being the 4th best wonder in UK, but the Giant's Causeway was also declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and a natural nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. Much of the Giant's Causeway and the Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is owned and managed by the National Trust.
The Giant's Causeway is all about the 40,000 interlocking columns which are made from basalt and some of these different stones reach as high as 39 feet in the air. The tops of these columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea, most of these columns are hexagonal and there are also those with four, five, seven or eight sides.
It is not just about the history of the Giant's Causeway and the magic of the place, but a lot of people don't even know that even though there are a lot of feet that moved through this place, there are some plants which only grow in this area and which botanists sometimes come to this location to check it, there are also different sea birds which are only found in this place and which also help in making it different to those who come to visit it and enjoy the beauty of nature while at the same time know more about its history.
Being in Bushmills or near the place, there are different other places which one could visit, such as doing a trip through the Causeway Coastal Route ( which you will definitely enjoy, you could also visit Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge which is one of the famous old bridges in Northern Ireland as well, checking Dunluce Castle which is also famous among the list ( and getting introduced to the town of Bushmills in general which will be also an interesting thing to do there ( which will of course include going to Bushmills Distillery along the way (
A place that you should definitely know more about and of course visit at some point..
P.S. The Giant's Causeway Castle is actually Dunluce Castle (see our video on that - amazing!)
