STORYLINE
MISS WORLD RETURNS HOME
The new Miss World, Kaiane Aldorino received a heroes welcome when she returned from South Africa to her home country of Gibraltar on Thursday (17DEC09).
Thousands of people turned out to show their support for the 22-year-old as she was paraded through the city centre in an open top car to John Mackintosh Square.
She then addressed the awaiting crowd from the balcony of City Hall.
Aldorino, an administrative clerk, was a crowd winner after winning the swimsuit competition.
British territory on the tip of the Iberian peninsula is one of the smallest countries in the world.
Gibraltar, known as The Rock, is a quirky, multicultural British outpost of 30,000 people, most of whom speak perfect Spanish and even own property along Spain's southern Mediterranean coast.
An estimated 12,000 people cross over from Spain daily to work and many more to visit.
Spain ceded sovereignty of Gibraltar to Britain in a 1713 treaty, but has persistently sought its return, claiming the territory as a natural and historic part of its geography.
The outcropping is in the Strait of Gibraltar, for centuries a strategic waterway linking the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Gibraltar: In Search of Burgess — snarling apes
Anthony Burgess points out in his autobiography that the Nazis possibly implanted in the Spaniards the superstition that when the apes left Gib, the British would leave too. Therefore, he writes, ‘on Winston Churchill’s insistence, the Rock apes had to be encouraged to flourish. They had to be fed and their breeding blessed, and there was even a Sergeant i/c Rock Apes’.
