Laws against feeding monkeys flouted in Upper Rock
Feeding Gibraltar’s Barbary macaques is a crime – and one that the Government has a clear policy on which is clearly stated on its website. The penalty for feeding monkeys is £500.
However, some taxi drivers appear to be flouting the law. When asked for a comment, Taxi Association Treasurer Christian Agius told GBC, everybody does it as the law isn't enforced, adding, it’s been going on for a while.
Our reporter Katy Docker joined a Rock tour to find out what the experience is like.
Government not happy with taxi service says Minister for Transport in Parliament
Minister for Transport and Traffic, Paul Balban, has said the Government is not happy with the service provided by the Gibraltar Taxi Association. This was in response to a question by Independent MP Marlene Hassan Nahon in Parliament.
Minister Balban said it would be foolish to say the Gibraltar Taxi Association is perfect but that it is not the intention of the Government to offer any new licenses.
When asked by Ms Hassan Nahon how the Government plans to improve the service and whether creating a competitive environment might help, Mr Balban said that traffic is a considerable problem, with taxis not able to drive from A to B quick enough.
The Traffic Minister also revealed that between January 2015 and August 2016 11 clamps to disable vehicles were placed, compared to 341 last month alone.
When questioned about the sudden and dramatic increase, the Minister replied that there has been no new policy put in place, however it’s the only method to ensure cars from abroad pay their fines.
Truancy rates were also revealed during Thursday’s session; All junior and middle schools are at a 0% truancy rate, with Bayside seeing a 2.2% truancy rate, and Westside a 1% rate, with school registers checked daily and weekly.

Brexit has nothing to do with the sovereignty of Gibraltar Picardo responds to Margallo
The decision by the UK to leave the EU has absolutely nothing to do with the sovereignty of Gibraltar, and the link between the two are only made by the Caretaker Spanish Foreign Minister. These were the words of the Chief Minister in a press conference this evening, in reaction to Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo’s latest comments in a Spanish TV Interview where he said a joint sovereignty deal was close.
The Chief Minister said Gibraltarians had seen off the attempts of many Spanish Foreign Ministers to reclaim the sovereignty of Gibraltar, and neither threats nor sweeteners would work on them.
Winner DMA 2013 Grand Prix and Gold Best Use of Direct Mail: WDMP & Monarch Airlines
Monarch couldn't outspend established airlines in the highly competitive ski-holiday market. Analysis of the Ski Club of Great Britain's database also showed that Monarch's routes would not appeal to their traditional audience of family-focused package skiers. To stand out, they needed to find a new audience – and a different way of engaging them.
Monarch created profiles from the Ski Club of Great Britain data and matched them to their own database. Independent, adventure skiers, keen to find their own way to the best snows, were the perfect fit. These skiers are constantly researching destinations and love new experiences. They’re also digitally savvy, so Monarch merged holiday content with technology to satisfy their curiosity.
Mail has always been an important channel in the travel-buying process for creating destination inspiration. Rich digital content added an extra dimension.
The audience was sent a mail pack, which used a ‘Maltese cross’ format that unfolded to reveal a mountain range, with information on fresh ski routes and resorts served by Monarch. Recipients simply held a smartphone over the mailing to access extra content on their mobile. Augmented Reality (AR) transported them to the resorts, whetting their appetites for the coming ski season.
A series of videos from Chemmy Alcott, Britain’s number one Olympic skier, invited them to explore ‘Monarch mountain’ and improve their skiing technique with her tips and advice. Most importantly, recipients could click through to see prices on the Monarch website and were able to book there and then.
Monarch Airlines achieved 7,201 bookings and £2.2 million in revenue from this campaign, which resulted in an average spend increase of 24.5% and an impressive ROI of 18:1.
Monarch was the first UK airline to combine mail with AR, breaking new ground for the industry sector. Their website saw 21.7% of mail recipients visit, with one even tweeting pictures of the pack, thanking Monarch for the great information.

Taxi Association lawyer says Upper Rock Nature Reserve has to be properly managed - 31.10.18
The Taxi Association’s lawyer, Daniel Feetham believes an asset like the Upper Rock Nature Reserve has to be properly managed. Our reporter Kevin Ruiz spoke to Daniel Feetham.
Cruises stopping at Gibraltar is forecast to decline by 25% next year - 29.11.18
The number of cruises stopping at Gibraltar is forecast to decline by 25 per cent next year - meaning 100 thousand fewer people visiting the Rock. This, according to a statement by the Chamber of Commerce, which also says the objection on environmental grounds by the DPC and Taxi Association to upgrading the Cable Car beggars belief. The Chamber says the Rock needs to invest in tourism, or the sector will simply decline.
Christina Cortes asked CEO, Edward Macquisten, about the projected decline in cruise calls.

Arrival of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Somerset to GIbraltar
The Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth arrived in Gibraltar today for her first overseas port visit.
The 65,000-tonne future flagship will be conducting a routine logistics stop having left her home in Portsmouth last week for helicopter trials.
These helicopter trials take place before the fixed wing F35 Lightning II trials later this year.
Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: As the Rock casts its shadow over the flight deck of our world-class aircraft carrier, Gibraltar rightfully marks HMS Queen Elizabeth's first overseas stop as she refuels and takes on supplies before continuing her sea trials. I'm sure our friends in Gibraltar will be proud to see our future flagship sail through British waters into their famous port.
Commodore Mike Walliker said: Today is a landmark day for Gibraltar and its long-standing and illustrious relationship with the Royal Navy.
Captain Jerry Kyd, the Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth, said: It is a great privilege for me to be bringing our new aircraft carrier into Gibraltar for her first ever overseas port visit.
Gibraltar is the perfect stop for HMS Queen Elizabeth as we conduct our flying trials in the waters off the Iberian Peninsula. And our visit also underlines the incredibly rich history and special relationship the Royal Navy and Royal Marines share with Gibraltar.
I am personally very lucky to have visited the Rock many times in my naval career, but well over a quarter of my sailors have not yet experienced what, for the Royal Navy, is something of an iconic run ashore.
Since departing the UK for the first time since being commissioned into the Royal Navy, HMS Queen Elizabeth and her ship's company of 1,000 men and women have been undergoing intensive training.
Under the guidance of the Royal Navy's Flag Officer Sea Training organisation, all those on board have been honing their skills in dealing with a series of lifelike exercise scenarios including fires, floods, man overboard drills and a simulated crash on deck.
His Excellency the Governor of Gibraltar, Lieutenant General Edward Davis said: From the moment Her Majesty appointed me as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar I, and no doubt all Gibraltarians, have been eagerly awaiting HMS Queen Elizabeth's first visit to the Rock.
My eagerness reflects two things. First, my pride in one of the world's most advanced aircraft carriers as a manifest demonstration of the British Navy's ambition and resolve to ensure that our nation's maritime and amphibious capability remains a decisive global force for good. And second, my confidence that HMS Queen Elizabeth's entry into service will see Gibraltar continuing to prove its vital relevance as a mounting and sustainment base for global Britain's contribution to international security.
I wish HMS Queen Elizabeth and her crew God speed as they make us all proud to be British.
The carrier reached a major milestone last week when a Naval Air Squadron embarked in the ship for the first time, marking another first in the regeneration of the Royal Navy's carrier strike capability. Merlin Mk2 helicopters of Culdrose-based 820 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) have been working with the ship since she sailed from Rosyth for the first time in June last year.
The Commander of British Forces in Gibraltar, Commodore Mike Walliker, said: Today is a landmark day for Gibraltar and its long-standing and illustrious relationship with the Royal Navy.
As Commander British Forces I am personally delighted to be able to welcome HMS Queen Elizabeth for her very first visit. It is utterly appropriate and no surprise that the Rock is the first port of call for the ship as she embarks on an exciting journey which has taken her from the builder's yard to eventually assuming her rightful position at the vanguard of the British fleet.
There is never any doubt in a sailor's mind that Gibraltar is the Mediterranean home from home of the Royal Navy, as the Rock has been for centuries now, and will continue to be the maritime gateway to everywhere.
The ship was escorted in to Gibraltar by the Royal Navy's Devonport-based Type 23 frigate HMS Somerset.
Commander Tim Berry, the Commanding Officer of HMS Somerset, said: Escorting the largest and most technologically advanced carrier ever built for the Royal Navy past the Rock of Gibraltar is of course a huge privilege.
