Shirakawago Village, Gifu in 4K - 白川郷●岐阜 - Japan As It Truly Is

Shirakawago in Gifu is a rare look at a Japan from the distant past. You can see all the best of this farmhouse village right here.

Shirakawago (白川郷) is very famous for its Gassho Zukkuri, or steep thatched roof houses. Imagine a Japan centuries ago, with no electricity, no internet, radio, TV, cars, trains, or anything else modern that you take for granted. And little news from the outside world coming in. Not to mention bitter winters with snow piling up as high as you are. To deal with the heavy snow, the farmhouses are built so they won't hold the snow, and the thick layer keeps the heavy rains of Japan out as well.

Shirakawago, along with a similar village, Gokayama in Toyama, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ogimachi in Shirakawago is the biggest with around 152 households and a population of 634 people. Gokayama has far fewer tourists, but is also more trouble to get to.
Shirakawago has become an enormously popular place to visit, and you will find huge crowds of day tripping tourists until the last bus leaves for the day (mostly about 5:30 PM). Those choosing to stay overnight at one of the farmhouses will find a totally different, silent atmosphere after that.
Most people going to Shirakawago are en route to Kanazawa or Takayama. You can leisurely see Shirakawago in just a few hours. One of the best views is the village overlook, which you can reach by bus (¥200 one way) or climb up in about 20 minutes. The path is closed during heavy snow.

There is no rail access to Shirakawago - the only way in or out is by bus (not covered by the full JR Rail Pass, but is covered by the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, the Shoryudo Highway Bus Ticket, and some others), or by rental car. By bus, most people travel from Takayama or Kanazawa.

Travelling to GIFU PREFECTURE???????? 岐阜市

Storm, Luke & I travelled to Gujo-Hachiman in Gifu prefecture to film an American TV show segment (more on that when it comes out) I may have lost my favourite Harry Potter pillow(????) on the journey but this town was amazing!! It's also known as 'The Water City' - and you can see why! It took us about 5 hours; 2 trains, a shinkansen, a bus & a taxi but it was so worth it! More to come to this series x

Tak banyak yang bisa dinikmati saat cuaca tidak bersahabat begini


Namun menjadi sebuah pengalaman tersendiri berdiri diudara minus 8 derajat dan melepas hand gloves - untung tidak terserang frostbite

岐阜県の県庁所在地である岐阜市は戦国時代、斎藤道三や織田信長が城主として支配した城下町として栄え、江戸時代には幕府の直轄地・後には尾張藩領となり岐阜奉行所が置かれ、岐阜四十四町からなる商工業の中心地として栄えました。
その後昭和までは大規模な繊維問屋街が街の経済を支えて来ましたが、輸入品の台頭や名古屋や東京への流通の集中などで衰退。岐阜・名古屋間の所要時間の短縮などで中心市街地の衰退化が進んでいます。
しかしながら皮肉にも名古屋へのアクセスの良さから再開発の機運も高まっており、中心部の柳ヶ瀬やJR岐阜・名鉄岐阜駅前の玉宮町など人の流れにも変化が表れています。
市内の交通網はかつては名鉄が運営する路面電車の他、市営バス、名鉄バスなども運行されていましたが、現在は岐阜バス（岐阜乗合自動車）が市内の交通を担っています。名鉄岐阜駅はJR岐阜駅から少し北側に位置しており、当駅を終点とするバス路線はありませんが、JR岐阜駅や隣接する岐阜バスターミナルと併せて分散型ターミナルとしての機能を果たしており、駅から若干の距離がある中心街・柳ヶ瀬や、岐阜城方面・岐阜大学など広い市域の隅々にむけて岐阜バスが発着します。
時間は19時20分頃から。岐阜バスは歴史的な経緯から三菱ふそう製が多いですが、現在はメルセデツベンツ製連接バス「清流ライナー」をはじめ、多彩な車種が発着する様子が観察できます。

This episode we continued our Journey North of Tokyo to see the historic village of Shirakawago within the gifu prefecture, it is one of the best things to do in Japan. NAGOYA CASTLE INFO:

Nagoya Castle was constructed on the orders of Ieyasu TOKUGAWA in order to secure an important position on the Tokaido road and to ward off attacks from the direction of Osaka. Construction was completed in 1612, and the castle is typical of those built on flatlands. Until the Meiji Restoration, Nagoya Castle flourished as the castle in which the Owari lineage of the Tokugawa family, the foremost of the family’s three lineages, resided.
In May 1945, during the air raids on Nagoya in the Second World War, most of the buildings including the main and small donjons, and the Hommaru Palace, were burned down. Fortunately, however, three corner towers, three gates, and most of the paintings on the sliding doors and walls in the Hommaru Palace survived the fire, and have been handed down as Important Cultural Assets.
